Welcome to my allotment gardening channel. My name is Emma and these vlogs are my allotment diaries. 2025 is is my sixth year on my plot. I'm learning as I go and would love for you to follow my allotment gardening journey by SUBSCRIBING to my channel!
I've siliconed
myself you know like in school when you
got to sit with your friends and it was
just such a better lesson because you
got to sit next to your friends that's
what it's like with plants I think I'd
imagine I don't
[Music]
know I'm not going to lie guys I didn't
think i' mut that up as much as I mucked
it up
[Music]
[Music]
morning everyone welcome back to my
alotment Diaries my name is Emma these
are the allotment Diaries and I'm so
happy to say it's literally a day later
than the last Vlog I filmed and the
weather is totally different we've got
blue sky we've got sun coming out
there's no wind and actually it feels
okay today it doesn't feel as warm as it
has been but it does definitely feel
better so I'm very excited about that um
I wasn't expecting it to feel this nice
and this warm today so it's it's quite
nice it's a nice happy surprise so
Einstein is sitting there waiting for me
he puts me off so much now cuz he hears
my voice and he comes straight down yeah
I hear you I hear you I will I will I
will come and feed you so like I've said
this week is all about doing two or
three set jobs a day and trying to sort
of keep on top of things and actually
it's working really well cuz my anxiety
level for the allotment plot has
definitely dropped and I do feel like
I'm more in control and things are
getting done and the jobs I'm working
through the jobs nice and calmly um
knowing that if I've missed a job it's
in it's it's imminent I'm going to do it
another day so it's working really well
basically so today I have three jobs
that I've set myself number one have
another look at the compost um somebody
did mention in my last compost Vlog that
it's looking a bit heavy and stodgy and
there's too much sort of weight on the
top so I'm going to try and break it up
turn it a little bit mix it together um
a lot of you don't like me doing that
but I'm going to do it
anyway I'm just trying to figure out how
to make compost guys and this is the
only way I know how to do it so we will
figure it out together um second job is
to tie in my sweet peas that I sewed
yesterday or I planted out yesterday cuz
they are flip-flopping all over the
place they need some more support that's
fine and a third job is quite a big job
so a lot of you said cuz I've duct taped
all of my windows around my Greenhouse
to stop them from popping out in any
wind cuz that's the last thing I want to
happen if a window pops out in your
greenhouse and it's quite windy the wind
can get into the greenhouse and lift it
up and fly fly it away somewhere and I
haven't yet secured it down properly cuz
um I just have so um you suggested
instead of duct tape which can come up
in the in the wet when it rains um to
use silicone so I've got this stuff it's
multi-purpose it's for internal and
external use waterproof and mold
resistant and it's clear so I thought
that's the best one I can get right
never used this stuff before but I
thought we'd figure it out together
might be fun so this is what we're doing
today this is the main big job but I'm
going to do the other jobs first because
they sound easier to be honest and um
I'd like do a job that I know how to do
before I do the job I don't know how to
do it's just the way I roll it builds my
confidence before it comes crashing down
again you want food yes okay right let's
feed the birdies cuz there's quite a few
Robins sitting around surrounding
me right try and get some meal worms for
you Einstein CU I know you're fussy
about
[Music]
that I will get you some more me worms
it's just I want use this up cuz otherwi
I wouldn't use it there's a big M worm
there hang on there's a big one on the
top see if he find that in going in yes
going
[Music]
in these are my onions that I sewed from
a seed you remember when I planted these
from a seed um when it was really
raining some of them have started to
germinate I can't believe it I better
put these in the greenhouse let's do
that
[Music]
first it's saying it's 11° in here 85%
humidity and it's got a sad face like
that's not good so should I open the
windows
[Music]
then I think it is the humidity it's
showing so obviously 85% is too high and
also if I got silicone in here don't
want it to be wet do I so want to do it
is dry so what I do is I'll leave that
open for a bit do some other jobs and
then hopefully it'll dry off right
that's good okay
[Music]
excellent so we planted the sweet peas
out you can one snapped already that is
so annoying that's actually
snapped yeah okay so they desperately
need sort of tying in a little bit just
to just to stop them snapping again in
the in the wind I've got this thinner
twine which I don't really like cuz it's
more plasticky um and I keep finding
this around my plot and I don't like it
K so I got the Woolen one which I
thought might be a bit better is it wool
I don't think it's wool um whatever it
is the the softer one but I don't think
it's quite thin enough to tie little
crops in like this so I'm using some of
this
stuff if you know a more natural
alternative to like a thinner twine
please let me know so I'm not a huge fan
of these like plasticky
ones gosh this is so fiddly this is why
I couldn't do this yesterday day look
how
fiddly oh but they really do need doing
um so I think you could reach up there
mate come on dream big get yourself
right up
there oh this is this
is this is not the
one this is not a relaxing Friday job
for me no no no I'm really really not
tying them too tight at all I can't tie
that one cuz it's too
small just
Loosely going to group you like the
group of friends you are you better be
friends
guys you're going together now that's it
you can reach up there can't you I do
reuse a lot of my twine as well I find
it all around the place and I do cut
bits off and reuse it everywhere um but
like I said I just don't like the
material
[Music]
and this this was the other new row
sweet peas that we put in yesterday that
I just whacked in and left to their own
devices and and of course they've all
just flopped
down so they're going to need some help
as well right we're going to tie them in
in clumps hopefully up like that so
going to try and tie them together in a
sort of
Clump mainly because I can't be bothered
to do them individually but also I want
to keep them with their mates I think
they'll just be happier you know like in
school when you got to sit with your
friends and it was just such a better
lesson cuz you got to sit next to your
friends that's what it's like with
plants I think I'd imagine I don't
know yeah it is so much easier just to
do it in
clumps you can quite reach right I think
these ones I could sort
of pull
up
that that right across there like
that oh just drops
it okay cool I think that's about okay
[Music]
[Music]
so once again using the crushed crushed
wel shells these are so like Seaside
shells and for protection but if you do
do that you must leave no gaps and also
make sure it's a really thick layer cuz
otherwise they will find a way through
it also do not let this happen this is a
genuine mistake that I've allowed to
happen a few times with crops so I've
protected them all around and then what
will happen is one will flop over
like that right over the shells or
whatever I put down and the Slugs will
use that as a bridge and they will just
come straight over up they are in your
crops and then they're jumping from crop
to crop all your crops are gone and the
line is still there so like the leaves
you must make sure the leaves don't flop
over you got to keep it all within or
make it bigger make the boundary bigger
but I've run out of them now yeah that's
a really important tip also fallen
leaves Fallen leaves like fall from a
tree or something like that again that's
a little bridge for them so you must not
let that happen you've got to keep your
defense strong
[Music]
ah so the last time I did my compost it
seems that I layered up loads of thick
cardboard which is probably not helping
things I mean it's probably stopping
potatoes from growing in there to be
honest which is always a good thing
because I don't really want potatoes to
grow in my compost um I think I might
start by ripping this
up smaller pieces I think might be
better also it's really dry so I don't
know
[Music]
did I catch that on
camera just flung a slug at my face I
just flung a slug at my
face oh my God I had a bleeding heart
attack
then how I didn't scream louder I don't
know I'm aware there's a lot of people
here today a lot of people who are
listening to my
Antics just threw a slug up my face
welcome to alotment
life that is really interesting so you
come a bit nearer I've got something to
show you two important discoveries that
I've just made firstly my potatoes are
still growing I think that means that
potatoes are officially the easiest crop
in the world to grow this is a a potato
that's sort of rotted a bit on the side
so I threw it into the compost tape it's
been covered over honestly for weeks and
weeks it's growing It's Got
Roots if you can't grow anything you can
grow a potato just trust me just throw a
potato out into the garden just anywhere
and you'll get a potato plant honestly
secondly more more exciting than a
potato growing in my compost I scarp it
away I mean firstly there are tons and
tons oh go sorry mate oh my God that's a
gigantic spider they holy
smoking I can't stay down there anymore
but there are um I hate spiders so much
there are loads of worms in here but I
actually just found a few of the compost
worms which are like bright red they're
very thin I wonder if I can find it
again hang
on CU I want to show you if you've never
seen a compos worm before they
exciting I mean there's so many worms in
here like Absol hundreds of them but the
compost worm is oh are you a compost
worm are you a compost worm may I just
borrow you for a second please thank you
so much I believe that might be one cuz
he quite
red compost worms are a type of worm
that appear in your compost tap and they
are fantastic that is basically what
compost is it's worm poo and your
compost worms are the worms that give
you the good worm poo oh yes there's one
right come here there he is that is
officially compost worm in my compost
fantastic right so really really these
are great signs that the compost is
working and going to plan so I think I'm
just going to cover it over should I
give it a bit of a water cuz the
cardboard is very dry I think I'll do
that
[Music]
[Music]
right notice how I've been putting this
job off for as long as possible cuz I'm
just I just don't know how to do it and
I'm really nervous I'm going to get it
wrong so are the windows dry enough I
think they
are yeah they are dry enough so I am
aware that to use one of these you need
to use one of these this is what my
husband gave me this morning it looks
like an instrument of torture for a
Victorian child it looks scary but
apparently this is how you you do it so
this is what we're going to use um I
need to puncture this
so I don't know scissors scissors with
that puncture it I don't know how to do
any of this to maybe I have to sore it
off or something how do I open
it I see I just have to puncture the top
but it's not puncturing very well how do
I open
it how do you open it right guys don't
be too mad at
me I don't know how to do this stuff but
I accidentally broke the top when I cut
this open um so I'm going to have to
duct tape it on to make sure it stays
[Music]
on I know this must be so frustrating to
watch but honestly I don't know what I'm
doing um I'm just going to duct tape
around it I
think right there we
go right okay well now that I've duct
taped this around here I thought I'm not
good at DIY and stuff like this I don't
know what I'm doing and there's never
any blooming instructions on the things
that you buy they just expect you to
know how to do it and I don't really
understand that so we got to put it into
this which I think is fairly easy I
don't think it's too hard sounded quite
easy yes cool now what was it that I had
to do oh squeeze the
trigger squeeze the trigger is that
yeah oh it's coming out it's coming out
it's coming out I knew this would be a
nightmare right okay let's try on this
window okay it's pretty
good is it still coming out stop stop
does that look right to you is that it
is that is that right I've sort of done
it down the window like this it's a bit
wonky and wobbly and like there's a few
little breaks in it and stuff does that
matter that was awful that bit that was
awful oh my God that was so
bad oh no oh no oh no the Top's broken
off and it was silicon come come out
through the the duct tape oh
God I'm not going to lie guys I didn't
think i' mut that up as much as I mucked
it up I completely completely mucked it
up I mucked it up from the moment I cut
it open with
shears so frustrating cuz normally I
figure stuff out and I figure out how to
do it but this time that is completely
broken I can't do it I can see how it's
going to work though I'm going to have
to call it day I've also got it all over
my hands if this is toxic I'm dead I
know why I felt that I didn't need
gloves I think cuz I didn't think I'd be
touching this stuff you know I didn't
think I'd be touching
it guys I've just been trying to wash my
hands and they're
waterproof guys my hands are waterproof
look at that my hand has gone waterproof
is that okay I look I look like I've got
small
pox I've got so much silicone over my
hands I don't know what to do
I can't wash it
off it's just like I've siliconed
myself am I going to be
okay I don't know what to do what would
be the benefit of this it's like the
lamest superpower in the world isn't it
um okay right we're just going to leave
that JW for now cool
[Music]
right so that's all I'm going to do
today just because I'm in a panic now
that my hands are ruined forever I'm
sure they'll be fine guys um I'm going
to leave it there today it feels like
it's going to rain now um the cold air
is coming in it feels like the
temperature's dropped so I'm glad I got
here this morning and actually got to
see some lovely Sunshine whenever it's
sunny in the UK at the moment I'm just
straight down to the allotment because
you never know when the weather's going
to change um and we could get like 10
days of cloud so it's always good just
to take in the sun whenever you can
that's what I think anyway right I'm
going to see you again on Monday guys
have a lovely gardening weekend um and
join me again on Monday so I'll see you
then thanks for watching bye
