Ladies and gentlemen, this is Joe's Classic Video Games
back with another cool arcade game repair video for you this evening.
This time we have the legendary, the iconic, the Cadillac, the Cat's Meow,
the great Miss Pat Gallagher, 20 year reunion, class of 1981, 20 year reunion.
Can anybody tell me when this game came out?
It's the class of 81 and it's the 20 year reunion.
What year did they make this machine?
Leave it down in the comments.
And also, if you know how to get it to play regular Pac-Man, leave that down in the comments.
But anyway, this game's got Miss Pac-Man and Gallagher all in the same cabinet.
You can also get it to play regular Pac-Man if you know the little password.
So I got this the other day at an auction and it's got a few problems.
It's got some problems.
I guess somebody dropped it at some point.
Just cracked it.
But it's really not that bad.
The Gallagher side art is faded really, really bad.
But that doesn't bother me.
You know why?
Because I got to fix all this anyway.
I got to fix this and I might have to repaint this side anyway.
So I'm just going to peel this Gallagher art on there and slap me a new side art on there.
Be fine.
Won't be no problem.
I got a decent deal on this.
So you have to go into an auction assuming the worst.
That's how I do it anyway.
I assume that the monitor's bad.
The board's bad.
And the power supply's bad.
And then I bid accordingly.
And you know, if I win, that's good.
If not, that's fine too.
I don't get attached to them.
To me, it's just a business.
It's just numbers.
And if you go in assuming that everything's bad and you get it back and you start working
on it and a couple things work, then you're ahead of the game.
But in the auction, they showed this and it made it look pretty bad.
It's really not as bad as it looks.
It's still actually solid.
You can see it's connected on this side.
It's not like it's falling off.
But this is the bad side.
So everything's in better shape than I was expecting it to be.
I wasn't there.
This was an online auction deal.
So the control panel is in really nice shape.
It's not even cracked at the bed like they usually do.
I was surprised.
The marquee looks like it's in very good shape.
I think that's going to be fine.
This side looks pretty dang good.
And that side's done.
See where I'm going here?
But these Miss Pac Gallagher reunions, boy, they get some bad burn in.
See all the Pac Man burn in?
People have come out lately.
This is a nobody mentioned it at the time.
But originally, Miss Pac Man and Gallagher had 19 inch monitors.
But when they brought the class of 81 out 20 year reunion, they put in a 25 inch monitor.
And people are complaining now that the monitor is too big.
Because if you're playing Pac Man down here, you're focusing up here.
The screen's so big, you can't even focus up here.
I don't know.
It is a little different whenever you're playing it.
I do prefer to play it on a 19 inch screen.
But it plays just fine on here too.
People are getting too picky.
They're getting too picky.
But anyway, it looks like it's missing some coin door stuff.
And they replaced this sticker at some point.
And they never even took off the coin door.
See how they just tried to put it right over top of the coin door.
So it's all bubbling up here.
I don't know if I'm going to be able to do much about that or not.
I'm going to try to just trim it real nice around here.
But it's probably not going to lay down flat.
It's coming loose down there.
All right, so enough about the outside, I guess.
Here's the inside.
It does appear like it's complete.
Here's the monitor board.
There's the power supply.
And there's the game board.
The game board is just laying in here though.
It's just kind of hanging in there.
So that's usually not a good sign.
And I can't fix these.
They're all surface mount stuff.
I'm sure somebody can.
But I'm going to hope the monitor is just bad.
Or the power supply is bad.
I haven't plugged it in yet.
I wanted to do it live on YouTube.
Here's my power cord.
Let's see if my green extension cord.
Bear with me.
I'm going to plug it in.
We're all going to see what it does together.
I'm plugging it in.
All right, we're going to have to switch now.
Sounds like the monitor might have came on.
The marquee is on.
They said it was Berk adoption.
Well, they didn't say Berk.
They said does not come on.
You know what that means.
Broke.
I didn't hear it go that ding, ding, ding, ding, ding.
Like it's supposed to do.
And I kind of heard the monitor.
So maybe we got hope.
Anybody know what that hippie said?
People probably have no idea what I'm talking about.
But long ago, like 30 years ago, almost.
I sold a guy a game.
I took it over to his house.
The guy was in the business for a long time.
He was kind of hippie looking guy.
And I'm not saying that to be talking bad about hippies.
I'm just kind of giving you an idea what he looked like.
He was a cool old hippie guy.
And we were just chatting out in his driveway, talking, you know, shooting the breeze.
And I hadn't been doing it very long.
This was 30 years ago.
And he was like, well, you know, power supply, power supply, power supply.
And that stuck with me this whole time.
Anytime I'm working on a game, I'm thinking about that old hippie.
Power supply, power supply, power supply.
I sold him a lost tomb by Stern a long, long time ago.
Anyway, back to the game, I guess.
Looks like we got neck glow.
See the neck glow?
Remember, I told you I heard the monitor.
I got dog ears.
I can hear it.
All right, let's turn up a little flyback.
Touch it in the back.
Flyback is glued.
We're not going to see nothing because the flyback is glued.
All right, well, we got to go get the multimeter that our buddy Todd sent us.
And then we're going to check the power supply.
All right, we got our handy dandy multimeter.
You could put it on AC and check it, see if you're getting AC first.
But it's got a little red LED on it right there.
So I already know I'm getting AC, but I'll check it for the video.
So you check the AC.
You're getting 120 AC to the power supply.
So the power supply is getting the AC going in.
Well, let's see if it's getting the DC coming out.
So you put the black on the black, red on the red,
and make sure you're holding both of them good.
Oh, come on.
I don't have enough hands.
4.8, which is a little bit low, but it would probably boot on 4.8.
So what's that tell you?
It tells you the board's broke, probably.
But I'm going to go get a screwdriver and turn up that power supply a little bit.
I guess we could check it on the board.
It's not a really good spot to check it on the board, though.
There's no LEDs or anything on the board anyway.
All right, I'm going to get a screwdriver, adjust the power supply, and we'll see.
All right, let's see if we're going to turn this baby up a little bit.
I don't think it's going to do anything, though.
4.8, wrong way.
Uh-oh, uh-oh, wish I would have the volume turned up.
Anybody see that little flashing LED now?
I guess it wasn't getting quite enough juice.
Boy, I might have done good on this deal.
All right, let's go see what we got on the screen.
Yeah, buddy, boy, we're making money now.
The door's locked and I can't even put a quarter in it because the quarters are,
the coin mechs are out of it.
Yeah, buddy, we're going to make that money.
It could still have other issues going on, but we're looking pretty darn good.
I want to see it switch over to the Pac-Man.
Little Missy Pac-Man.
Back in the day at the auctions, there was this auctioneer, Eric,
and he would always say, Missy Pac-Man, not Miss Pac-Man, not Pac-Man, Missy Pac-Man.
Little Missy Pac-Man.
Looks like it's working.
That hippie knew.
That hippie knows what he's talking about.
If you ever don't believe me, got the proof.
Y'all saw it.
I had it turned on.
There was no LED blinking.
It was at 4.8.
I adjusted up to 5.1 and then it went ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, just like I said it would.
Or I said it was supposed to, and now it's working.
All right, people probably sick of me talking.
I don't really talk that much normally.
I don't know what's with me today.
All right, so now I got to take it in the back.
We're going to, this is all pretty freaking solid.
It's just got a crack in it.
So all I'm going to do, I'm going to put me some Bondo in there.
Bondo, Bondo, Bondo.
I'm going to sand it.
I guess I got to take this side art off first, though.
Sometimes it peels right off.
Then other times you got to use a heat gun.
I guess I'll show you that process if anybody cares.
Let me get the heat gun.
Well, sometimes you need a heat gun, but I always try to do it this way if I can.
Because whenever you do it with a heat gun, it just makes it kind of more of a mess.
There's a lot more glue and residue stuck on the machine.
I just can't believe that board's good.
I thought for sure that board was going to be bad.
Today's my lucky day, I guess.
Shows you how important that power supply is.
Power supply, power supply, power supply.
It was at like 4.85, wasn't it?
Turned it up to 5.1, it booted, and everything's good, we think.
I haven't played it yet, but it's looking pretty good.
I still got to do a lot of work to it.
I got to do, I'm going to put a new power supply in it.
That's one thing we do to all of our games.
And the monitor, I got to take the monitor out.
I got to replace the caps on it.
Probably going to have to put a new fly back in it because it's a 7400.
Do some Bondo work.
I got to repaint this side.
And I'm hoping that front, I can get that artwork to lay flat.
If not, I might have to take all that off and I may just paint the whole front of it black.
People are going to think this video staged or something.
I swear, I hadn't plugged this thing in.
But anyway, you guys probably don't want to watch me peel all this off.
So I'm going to do a bunch of cosmetic work on it.
And then I'll probably recap that monitor next too.
But anyway, I'm going to get to work here and I'll be back in a little bit.
All right, so I'm working on this crack.
And it was a little kicked in, just slightly, like just barely.
And I had this spare piece of wood in the back
and it actually was already cut at an angle like that.
So I just tapped it down.
You know, the more I hit it down, the more it pushes it out.
I've got it pretty dang close.
If you look back earlier in the video, you could see a little bit of this was out.
I think that's good enough for me.
I'm just trying to make this an 8.
So I'm going to put a little Bondo in it.
I may put a little wood glue too on the inside.
But anyway, I'll smear some Bondo on there, sand it out,
and then we'll put a little bit of glue in it and knock that board back out.
Should be solid.
All right, got a little Bondo on it.
Did a little bit right there too.
I'm going to try to get some wood glue down inside there
and probably along that joint in there.
Let this dry, sand it down, paint it.
I think it'd be good.
All right, I got the monitor board out.
This is a 7400 Wells Gardner.
I'm going to go through it.
I'm going to change all these capacitors.
It's going to take a while.
This one has quite a bit on it.
I'm going to try to get away with leaving the flyback.
This one doesn't have any cracks in it that I can see.
And it had a pretty good picture.
We're going to try to roll them dice and flybacks are getting expensive.
This has been updated at some point because it's got the heat sinks on it.
These were having a problem where these were the color transistors
and they get so hot sometimes they fall right off the board.
So they released an update.
You put these heat sinks on them so it helps with that.
Anyway, I'm going to change all these caps while my Bondo and everything's drying and
we'll put it back in and see how everything looks.
I'm going to change all these leg levelers too.
These are about worn out and they just unscrewed.
How long is this thing?
All right, I'm going to change all four of those.
I got to fix this corner, some Bondo, get it all evened out.
I did a pretty bad job.
I think I can do better than that.
And then this is loose like we were talking about.
But it's supposed to have a little kick plate there.
So I'm just going to trim it.
This is like a textured.
I'm just going to cut it about like that all the way across.
See how that goes.
Well, I got that taken care of.
Next up is the coin door.
I guess it's my lucky day.
I'm going to have to buy a lottery ticket, I guess, on the way home.
So I was missing all this stuff.
It looks like they had a card reader, credit card reader hooked up to it.
Well, thankfully, whoever took all that off.
Left them inside the game in this box.
Even got all the screws down in there.
So I'm hoping I can just screw it all back in.
Put my little light bulbs back in there.
Put a couple of new locks on it.
I'm going to take off this security bar.
Which is going to leave me some bad spots there.
But I think it's going to look better than the lockdown bar.
I also already trimmed the bottom because this is textured.
This is like a kick plate.
That's a different type of material.
But I got it to lay pretty flat.
Looking pretty good.
Fixed my corner pretty good.
All right, I got all that back on there.
It all went back on real easy.
Thanks to whoever put all those parts in the box for me.
Put everything back, got two locks on it.
Still going to try to work on this area a little bit.
I might just touch it up a little bit with some black.
But next up, the control panel.
So to me, it's just not a Pac-Man or a Ms. Pac-Man without a red ball joystick.
This one's been replaced some time.
This is a bat style joystick.
Looks like a bat.
Ball top.
Bat style.
So these are actually usually on like Street Fighters, Mortal Kombat, fighting games.
But a Ms. Pac-Man will always have a red ball joystick on it.
So I'm going to swap that.
And I noticed earlier, I was going to put new switches in it anyway.
But I knew that these two switches were messed up just because I didn't hear them.
So you listen.
You're going to click, click.
I listen to these.
The button's not working.
And this button's not working.
Flip it up.
You can see that the little red actuator is stuck up in the cherry switch.
So we always put brand new cherry switches in all of our games.
Just because we know that will happen.
That one's still good.
But we're going to change them all anyway.
And there's the bottom of the joystick.
So they're pretty easy to change.
It's four bolts.
And each connection's got two wires going to it.
A ground and an actuator.
So that's right, left, up, and down.
So there's lots of little things that we do to these machines.
All right, I got it all finished up.
I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.
Looks like an eight to me.
Got new art on it.
We painted it.
Got my joystick in there how I wanted it.
These games had one problem when you had them on location.
Nobody would ever read.
It's got two sets of start buttons.
So to play Pac-Man, you'd have to use these.
To play Galaga, you have to use those.
Well, nobody ever reads.
So people would put a quarter in, and they'd want to play Pac-Man,
but they'd hit these start buttons.
Or they'd want to play Galaga, and they'd hit those start buttons.
So this was the 20-year reunion.
They actually made a 25-year reunion, and whenever they did that one,
they did away with the two sets of start buttons.
People wanted their money back.
I want my 50 cent back.
I didn't want to play Galaga.
I wanted to play Pac-Man.
Ronnie worked for an operator for a while, and it happened all the time.
But anyway, this is the type of stuff I work on.
This one wanted to cooperate with me.
Everything kind of just fell into place.
I had the coin door stuff was inside of it.
The monitor cooperated.
The power supply was just a little bit low.
Everything kind of went together pretty easy.
This is the stuff I like to work on.
And that's why you don't see me as much as Ronnie,
because I'm kind of working on this quick stuff like this.
We do a lot of repairs for people locally,
and I always end up working on the same stuff,
because everybody always has a Galaga or a Pac-Man or one of the newer multi-games.
And so they bring it in, drop it off.
I fix it.
They pick it back up, or I'm out doing a delivery or something.
And Ronnie's more into the technical side of things.
So his videos, you know,
he'll work on a pinball machine for a week sometimes.
And I just don't have that kind of patience.
I like to work on something different every day.
So if I can't get it, knock it out in a day and move on to something else,
I'm not really all that interested.
That's just how I am.
I don't have the patience.
But anyway, thanks everybody for watching.
We'll see you on the next one.
There's a Ms. Pac-Man Galaga machine here.
And it's on free play!
Got you sucker.
Take that.
And how about one of these?
Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
Giving him points.
Look at the high score.
That's fake.
Fake.
Well, I didn't get my extra points.
You gotta get all three of them to get your extra points.
But that's okay.
Nope.
Stage 10.
Also known as they don't shoot.
Oh, you can't hide in the corner people.
You cannot hide in the corner.
Don't try that.
Gotta stay in the middle.
Missed it.
Now when people tell you you need that double ship.
Come on now.
You don't need that double ship.
It's nonsense about the double ship.
People, if you get the double ship, it takes one of your ship.
It's a double ship because you lose a ship.
It's not smart.
It's a trick.
It's a scam folks.
You're trusting the Galaga.
Don't do that.
Why would you trust the thing that you're playing against?
Oh, they got fast on me.
Oh lord, that was fast.
Oh, they're getting even quicker.
They're coming at me.
They ain't playing around.
They want their quarterback.
Come on now.
Got stuck in the corner.
Can't get stuck in the corner folks.
All right, this is probably gonna be it.
Y'all got to know your limitations.
My advice to anyone trying to play Galaga.
Now I'm not that great.
I'm all right.
My advice will be you can't hide in the corner.
Come on extra man.
I need an extra man.
Have I got all the extra men that you can get?
Come on you suckers.
I ain't scared.
Gotta stay in the middle folks.
You gotta stay in the middle.
Gotta stay in the middle.
Don't go to the edges.
A little bit off.
My timing was just slightly sloppy.
That's that.
You did a pretty good job on this one Joe.
It works pretty good.
This one's gonna, this one's gonna work out all right.
