Egg shells and egg cartons make wonderful natural materials to use as seedling germination containers. During this video, Steve demonstrates how to do this.

g'day welcome to our cultivate my name
is Steve and today we're going to look
at a couple of alternative types of
containers that you can use to germinate
new seedlings or starters when you buy
commercially raised seedlings or
starters you will usually find that they
are provided in these types of
containers now the problem with these
containers is of course that they are
plastic and they're not really
recyclable it is possible to repurpose
them or reuse them to raise more
seedlings but eventually they really
outlive their use by date so I'm going
to talk about a couple of alternatives
to these although I do encourage you if
you do have these to use them again and
again and again but some alternatives to
them include things like old egg cartons
or even the old eggshells themselves
after you've finished with them having
had your fried eggs or poached eggs in
the morning so what you really need to
do is to treat this eggshell like a
little container for your seedling
starter so I'm going to simply place
some seedling starter mix into each of
these
and now it's just a simple matter off
sewing our seed within each of these
little containers just top each of those
up with a little bit more seedling
starter mix follow that with a very
light water place them in a suitable
location and just let them go when these
seeds have germinated and they have
grown to the point where I can actually
transplant them into the ground it is
just simply a matter of placing the
entire egg shell into the ground with
the seedling in it and that in itself
will minimize transplant shock now only
one word of caution when it comes to
this and that is make sure that your egg
shells have been well dried and aged
even because egg shells can be a place
for the transmission of the Salmonella
bacteria so make sure that the eggshells
are dry and well aged and everything
will be fine now if you don't want to
use the eggshells themselves but I would
encourage you to I do you can't just
simply use all their cartons themselves
it's just again a simple matter of add
your seedling starter mix so the seeds
light water allow them to germinate and
then if you wish you can actually cut
these up into the individual sections
and you can place them directly into the
ground and that in itself will minimize
transplant shock
