we just made some high tech high profit
keychains in a matter of minutes smart
keychains and we'll show you how we did
it right now what is up welcome back do
you like to do it build it or make it so
do we and we have new videos each week
this week we're doing keychains and I
know what you're thinking you're
thinking exactly what I was thinking
when Kim said "Hey you want to do some
keychains boring." But thank you kim was
like "Now we're going to make some high
techch keychains that you could even
make some of them be jokes." And I was
like "What do you mean?" She goes "We're
going to scan paying attention now."
Yeah she said "We'll be able to scan the
the little keychains and take you to a
URL or a contact card." And I was like
"Oh meme time." Yeah he was in then he
was in then I had his attention
rfid stands for radio frequency
identification and a subset of that is
NFC which is near field communication so
RFID is the huge umbrella and that's
what folks use or big companies use for
asset tracking tagging things in a
warehouse that's what you're going to
use RFID you've seen those spiral
stickers that are on items that's an
RFID tag we're going to use NFC tags to
make our smart keychains nfc tags are
things like you tapless pay or if you
have to scan an ID badge to get in a
building or inside of a room that is
also NFC and that's so easy to do you'd
think that was technology that us as
small business crafters or owners
wouldn't be able to utilize but we can
and I'm going to show you how today it's
going to be so simple so let me tell you
a little bit more about these tags i
just ordered these off of Amazon you can
order them off of Amazon there's
different types of NFC tags so when you
go on there I don't want you to get
confused we have a couple of types here
and I'll show you when we get ready to
assemble but the basics of these is
there's NFC 213 215 and 216 whatever it
takes whatever it takes so the
difference between the three of them is
simply data storage size so a 213 tag is
going to give you what you need for
scanning uh websites contact cards and
things like that it's going to be fine
so one of these is 213 one of these is
215 this just has a little bit more
storage i have the numbers here 144
bytes 504 bytes and the 216 is the big
one and that is 888 bytes now another
interesting So why would you need the
different bytes to store more
information okay so different types of
things that you might store on there but
for what we're doing I'm not going to
get too deep into it we're storing
websites contact cards uh links to
videos things like that and the 213 and
the 215 are going to be just fine for
what we're doing now can you password
protect these things yes i was just
getting ready to say that so both both
versions why do you ask Garrett i don't
know just maybe if I happen upon an RFID
tag that isn't secure I just reprogram
it like maybe I want to send somebody's
menus to I don't know cat meme or maybe
ah Rick rolling
[Music]
so yes you can password protect them
it's something to think about normally
you just say "Oh I'll tap it i'll get to
you take you to my Etsy store i'll take
you to my website take you to my YouTube
channel." Whatever it might be you just
would tap it but you don't want somebody
coming along knowing what they're doing
understanding what the technology is and
changing that tap to something else
because you can do that so yes you can
password protect them so that if
somebody taps it and says "Hey I want a
rewrite." It's going to ask you for a
password okay so does everybody know
they can password protect them well they
do now
no I don't think so okay i don't maybe
you'll have to maybe test it we'll do
some real world testing i'll let you
know step one we're going to gather all
of our supplies we needed some acrylic
because we're making acrylic keychains
so we have some scraps that we're going
to try to squeeze some keychains out of
well they're not scraps something to
think about these were actually um items
in our goodie bag from the Next Level
Laser Conference last year they're
sample packs that came in our goodie bag
so little shout out to Next Level Laser
Conference we're going to be there we're
going to be Oh we're going to be
presenting yes we're going to be
teaching a little class or session so
definitely come by and see us but you
know don't waste these materials that
you get because I'm going to make four
keychains out of these little Well that
I can make even more out of yeah I'm
going to make a bunch i'm making four
out of these little four uh what are
these like four inch scraps here or
three inch scraps I think is what they
are yes about right yeah that's about
right you could probably use wood or MDF
i'm using acrylic i think it'll look
cooler yes so you can use acrylic you
can use wood but you can't use metal so
I guess you can't because it blocks the
signal that's right because it's
conductive and you can't use a
conductive material no because it's a
radio ID tag okay all right i get it now
you can buy special RFID tags for metal
but we don't need to go into all that
you guys can do a little research on
that we're just crafters making
keychains today well I get it now
because my badge back when I had a day
job had a little fairday cage it would
sit in i guess it was so it couldn't be
scanned outside of work there you go yes
yes so all right what else do we need we
needed some 3M tape or double-sided tape
we're using this Elizabeth Craft Designs
double-sided tape right 3m tape is what
you see most often we've had this roll
we've been using this roll and we're
still using this roll so it's just
easier i'm going to slap it on the back
of this before I even cut it out that
way I can just slap all my pieces
together we're just going to slap a lot
of slapping
it's
just And of course you need your RFID
tags now let me show you what these
little guys look like in this bag i'm
sure you know what they look like if
you've ever peeled a little sticker off
of uh something that came in the store
yes but I wanted to show you that I got
two types so that you guys know what
they look like raw yes and I can't get
mine
open why can't I get it open oh wow
these are a lot smaller than I thought
they were oh I got so many more ideas
now there are I thought they were like a
1 in by 1 in square these things are
like maybe a/4 in by 1/2 in yes I got
those on purpose because they were
little guys and then I got regular
circle ones yes these are circles i
don't know how well you can see them on
camera so just a little white circle but
you can see that the metal that seems to
have more area this is the one that has
more memory it is okay all right i got
you so I wonder how big the 800's are
are those probably an inch and a half i
don't know i didn't look those up i
didn't need that much all right well
these little guys will these little guys
will hold a URL right yeah yeah url
contact pretty much anything you need to
do i mean the URL is all I need oh my
gosh
so we're going to use these little tags
i got two different ones they're super
paper thin so I can't wait to show you
uh you can sandwich it between things
and you won't even know it's in there
ooh like you could tag people you could
tag things
all right step two and that is it
step two we're going to make our cut
file i've actually already created a cut
file for you if you join us over on
Patreon it's going to be free for all
our patron members for all tiers
everybody gets it for free jump on for
free woo jump on over to our Patreon
page and it has all the social media
icons on there so this one is Instagram
it also has Facebook Tik Tok
YouTube yeah YouTube all of them there's
a whole bunch of them in there use any
of those and create any of these into a
little keychain and I think it's a great
thing it doesn't just have to say if
this says Instagram or shows the
Instagram logo but it actually takes you
to our linkree page which is going to
have all of our socials but it lets
people know this is a social media icon
and it makes them ask the question what
does it do what does it do step three
we're going to make all of our cuts
we're going to slap some of this 3M tape
on the back of the acrylic there's a lot
of slapping going on and then we're
going to throw it in our X tool P2S to
cut it out now I usually use standoffs
when I'm cutting acrylic but because I
have some of this double-sided tape on
the back I don't really need to worry
about flashback so I'm just going to
throw it in there right on the uh
slats slats some metal slats it's not a
honeycomb bed in there right now it's a
metal slats at right
now
[Music]
here we are in creative space this is
why I love the camera on the P2 here
because you can use your close-up view
and I can make sure everything is lined
up on these small pieces of acrylic i
can throw three pieces of acrylic in and
have three different cuts done at one
time on three different materials we're
going to use the red layer as the cut
layer the blue layer is the score layer
and then I'm going to use for all three
pieces of acrylic here i'm using the
glitter acrylic settings from X Tool
[Music]
step four time to assemble we're going
to take one of these little RFID
stickers put it in between on the sticky
side these two pieces of
acrylic we're going to mash them
together then we're going to put the
little logo on it done i think the
hardest part was removing the masking
all right well before I do that let me
take off my little transfer tape here oh
true let's take off the transfer tape on
both big pieces of acrylic right we
didn't really have to put it on both
sides but we did so that way it's extra
stuck together now I'm going to take one
of my little RFID stickers peas you know
what this reminds me of remember those
dots that you'd get on the wax on the
paper you'd eat the dots off the paper
mine is have a name this is like paper
paper thin it is you're not going to see
it in there mine is also paper thin so
I've added
it and now I'm going to sandwich it
there's
mine and now my Tik Tok logo goes on
here yes and I'm going to
put YouTube logo on mine score marks are
kind of hard to
see oh but you know what I just learned
what once it's down it's down the tape
is pretty
sticky i like to shift a little bit and
that's where that's where it lives
now all right it's one shot you got one
shot kid oh about to put on the wrong
side one shot kid make it count
well that's tricky for this one because
you're right on this pink acrylic I
can't see the score marks that well
all right let's do it
for final assembly we're using these
little keychain thingies they go in this
little hole that Kim made at the top it
kind of makes them look a little more
professional and it's a lot easier than
trying to get that spiral keychain ring
around this thing without trying to
break it super easy i love these the
keychain thingies come in like all kinds
of colors this bag did I got a little
variety pack i think I'm going to go
with white white to match the Yeah do I
have a bunch of white ones yep
yeah you just pop one side
in and then pop the other side through
it's in
they're a lot more sturdy than I thought
they'd be they look like silicone but
they're more like a a plastic well this
one's a little more like
[Music]
silicone so
cute but wait there's more step five
time for a little programming kim
downloaded a free app that she's going
to use to program or assign some data to
each one of these little key tags it is
super easy it is not difficult at all
anyone can do it we're going to show you
exactly how to program one of these
tiles right now now let's take a peek at
a phone so we're going to click on this
NFC tools it's a free
download Apple or
Android and you can read write other and
task so we're going to write we're going
to add a record and then it comes with
all of these types of records text URLs
uh video all your social networks so if
I just want to click Instagram I
can email contact card phone numbers uh
sends a text message
location so many different things
already programmed in here program a
Wi-Fi network we're just going to do a
URL because we're putting in our link
tree so I just pasted in the link tree
information https is already here and at
the beginning just start with www hit
okay now it knows what I want to put in
there and I'm going to
say write so I got to approach an NFC
tag there's
that write complete
okay and that is it all right can now
tap it to check it all
right ready mhm so I'm just gonna I
don't have to do anything i don't have
to have any special app open on my phone
i'm just going to get close to it and
it's going to immediately pull up our
link tree and that's it that's all there
is to it now this is such a great easy
project you can make a fun keychain and
make it functional it's perfect for a
small business you can make jewelry you
can make lanyards yeah i mean you can
make a whole booth of these where you
can program them personalize right there
boom bam boom figure out some kind of
website or whatever to send them to but
everybody's got an Instagram now
everybody has a Facebook i mean if you
can put their Facebook on the tag right
at the booth hey what's your Insta and
you just give them your little boop NFC
tag have them boop follow me yep there
you go yeah that is pretty cool i I am
super stoked on these now i have so many
ideas i can't wait to see what you guys
do i want you to come back post it on
our Facebook group show me what you've
made and I'm going to show you what I'm
going to make because DJ Derek has
already contracted me to make him some
keychains and I feel like he's going to
be up to no
good big thanks to all of our patrons we
love you guys and that is the best way
to support this channel that is a great
community over there and speaking of
community we have the jamboree coming up
