In our latest Living In episode, we check out a wonderfully transformed Executive HDB lovingly put together by homeowners Vincent and Geraldine. Looking back at the original condition of this 1,580 sq ft home, it's quite amazing to see how much it has changed to this warm and cosy mid-century inspired home - which by the way is home to two cuties June and Luna as well!
I've been staying in this house for almost a year,
and this is an executive apartment located in Tampines.
The size is about 1,580 square feet.
I'm Veradine, and I'm an art teacher.
Hi, I'm Vincent, and I work in finance.
I think from the start, we knew very clearly that we wanted
a bright and open space,
so we gravitated towards mid-century look
because it involved a lot of non-permanent fixtures and furniture,
and it had that very lived-in look that created that very comfortable
and cosy space that we were looking for in a home.
Vincent and I actually enjoy the outdoors a lot.
When we travel, we tend to choose activities like hiking
and visiting natural spaces over shopping in urban cities,
so we wanted to bring in that element of nature and openness to our home as well.
When we first purchased the house,
the previous owner had already demolished the fourth room, or the study room,
so what we did further was to demolish the wall
towards the kitchen and the service yard,
so to create an open kitchen concept.
We also reconfigured some of the doors to the master bedroom
to accommodate our walk-in wardrobe layout.
On a typical day at home, we enjoy spending our time most in the living area.
We'll either be lounging on the sofa like we are right now with the dogs,
or we'll be ripping up some brunch in the kitchen.
All the framed photography and artworks around the house
are actually created by Vincent and I.
So being very aesthetic people, we love creating things for our home.
When sourcing for home décor, we didn't have a go-to supplier per se.
We prioritised looking for the perfect piece of furniture or decoration for our house,
so we explored many online platforms like Easy Buy, Carousel and Hitvan
just to look for that perfect piece.
We also tried to incorporate bits of quirky elements in the home
with pops of yellow, such as the yellow square in our living room wall.
For the balcony, we used bifold glass doors that can be opened fully
to allow light and wind to pour into the house to create a semi-outdoor feel.
We also used patterned tiles and ventilation blocks
to bring in a slightly local and old-school touch to the balcony as well.
My advice for future young homebuyers would be to really look at what stage of life you are in.
For us, buying a resale was the best choice as we could move forward with our lives.
When looking for an interior designer,
although friend and relative recommendations may be very helpful,
I think it's most important to find an ID whose personality and style really matches what you're looking for.
Only then, you can bounce ideas off each other and that's where your house will take off.
