I don't know So, is this a new annual tradition, I guess Where we do a video where we have some sort of ego trip Where we talk about what we've been up to Well, I figured we could just do a video Where we're just recapping what we've done For the last couple of months In the form of a Q&A So, first question How was 2023? It's been a great year Thank you, I mean Started a Patreon, the community Couple of mags We launched presets as well Which has been I was a bit sceptical about doing But seeing people use them And tag us on how they use them has been Yeah, super cool What street photography have you been enjoying lately? So I guess in making the new issue of the magazine I found a bunch of photographers Whose work I'm really interested in One of them who's just sent me photos today Is Julia Coddington And seeing her photos from India They're incredible And I've seen so many people Shoot in that kind of style Where they're just filling the frame And packing as much stuff into the frame as possible To make it interesting And I think the way she does it is just brilliant Yes, I'm just really excited to see that in print When that comes together as well Yeah, she's amazing What stuff have you been enjoying lately? I haven't bought a zine yet I suppose it's not really street But more like documentary and portraits But I just think such beautiful portrait work I think he shoots on films, black and white He took a really nice picture of like a butcher shop Around the corner from my house as well Which I'm super into I think another thing we did this year Which I'm really happy with is And I didn't want to do it And you kind of pushed me to do it But the photo walks We did two photo walks this year Why didn't you want to do it? I didn't want to do it because I think street photography is kind of a solitary thing So the idea of just walking With 20 or 30 people Trying to take candid photographs It just felt kind of a weird thing to do I barely took any photos on both photo walks But it was good to meet people and just chat And get some feedback about what we're doing as well I thought that was really good Yeah, I really enjoyed the photo walks So also some people Yeah, I mean also We didn't take many pictures But some people got some really nice shots as well So it was cool But yeah, I think like I think it's good to get out And meet some people who have the same Strange obsession Yeah, I've really really enjoyed them What have you been shooting this year? A good bit of commercial work I've done some travel photography For Coné Nast in Marseille I did a magazine feature for Belmond And I photographed the Champions League finals in Istanbul So I've been traveling a fair bit I did another project this year Which is kind of a challenge So I took about 50 street portraits Over the course of like three days It's not something I've really done before Like I've taken in total Maybe 10 street portraits Just stopping people Because I wasn't really that into it Did you find that Having the excuse that You're actually working on a project That made it easier to approach people then 100% because I had I had a deadline to meet I'd already signed the contract I had to do it I love those photos They're so nice Thanks I haven't really posted many of them You send me so many pictures I'm like those are so good You never post them You sent me that one from the photo walk Of like these people trying to rescue a cat And I'm like that's one of my Favorite pictures of yours That you've ever taken I think And just hiding it away What's that about I don't know I guess I'm just not into Posting stuff on Instagram That much anymore Yeah I don't know What have you been working on this year Well thanks for asking I haven't had a mass amount of time to shoot I've been like doing like More intentional stuff Like actual setting aside time And going to events like The coronation or King's birthday or pride Or just like Morris dancer meet up the other day I think like freelancing For a couple of years I guess I've kind of got this point Where I'm quite used to Working quite quickly I've kind of just transferred that To street photography a bit I guess I'm not really into What I used to do of literally Just walking for like Eight hours not eating or drinking Coming home with thousands of shots I'm kind of enjoying like Literally being like Planning it out I've got two hours to go here Having two cameras And just tackling it like A sort of mini project I think I've kind of That's how I like to work now really That's just the way I have to work Really with the amount of time I have Yeah I was just going to say like You had a kid So that drastically reduces The amount of time you can spend I guess you can't just go out for Eight hours whenever you want I mean I could but I like to We split the childcare quite evenly So yeah You can't just keep doing the same thing forever I can't just keep spending my entire weekend Walking up and down Oxford Circus So I've got to think about it a bit differently Like I said I think it's a bit of like a Did like a When I first went freelance I was doing a lot of events And like really like small little jobs as well So yeah I quite like You've got to put a bit of pressure on yourself right Like you were saying about the portrait job you know What photo books have you been looking at Oh I did get I did get this Nice I guess you know about his comparison experiment Yeah I have another book of his Where there's a section on that series And I've seen him talk about it before I guess it's kind of a famous experiment That he did like shooting black and white And color for all those years But in just going through the book Like there's so much in it And there's a breakdown of each photo I think it's more interesting reading books like this Than it is just looking at a photo book Which is just it's just pictures That's true I do really like the ones That add a bit more bit more context Like that Frank Horvath one With like his little diary in there as well Not just pictures Yeah the Frank Horvath one's good Do you read any stuff like That would be on photographing communities No I haven't seen that book Should I get it Yeah so there's a bunch of those aperture books That would be Larry Fink has one Larry Fink who recently passed He's a good book on composition in that series And they're really good Because it's just like practical advice It's the kind of stuff you would probably get If you did a workshop with them Okay What are you reading You know what I'm reading Steven King Steven King just Steven King Fairytale at the moment I feel a bit dumb That I just had to give up on needful things But it's a bit of a slog Too dense I kept falling asleep Photo book wise I just bought Mike Chudley's book It arrived like yesterday Still in the wrap Haven't opened it yet So I had to tuck into that The thing about I've just got like I wanted to buy more books But I have a finite amount of space So I might have to do like a sort of like swap I want to maybe sell some Or and then do a little I'm gonna have to do like a One in one out situation I wonder could we do a community thing Where we do that Just swap books Community book swap It's a nice idea Community book swap Okay Watch us never do that No That's going into the stockpile of ideas Brilliant ideas that we never actually do What cameras have you been using this year What have you been liking Well haven't you You've been on a rampage With cameras this year Worse than me this year It's been outrageous Right now I've got the S5 Panasonic Which I think is a brilliant workhorse camera Great for video Auto focus probably isn't a strong point But yeah it's great It's got a good set of lenses as well I like all the lenses They're all the same size Same filter thread They're all really high quality They're not too expensive I've just reached a stage Where I realized that I need a boring workhorse camera And then you know A camera I actually enjoy using Which is Insert drumroll Yeah I was trying to take a iPhone 6 Oh fuck I'm out of focus again Just give me about 30 seconds The irony of you Talking about this How good this S5 is This is shocking I have to show my eyes You've got to scan your retinas Um yeah This is uh This is what I use for We'll never know Because it will never be in focus If I hold it here You can see what it is M10 Beautiful What lens you got on it I'm using the 50 Summicron How you use a rangefinder With a 50mm I know people do it I mean obviously people do it But I just don't get it If I shoot at f8 And zone focus to 2, 3 meters I can generally get stuff In focus It's kind of fun to use like that If you say so What are you using the 5D Mostly GFX this year I've been through two of them Two break Solely X-T4 for video Which I'm really happy I made the switch to Just no need to color grade with it I'm really happy with the way The footage looks Stabilized Lightweight Using this Viltrox With a 27mm ND filter on it X-Pro3 used a lot this year Love that Resolution for next year Is no more cameras Yeah I bet you're already I bet you've got tabs open Right now On MPB That's some like obscure camera Was really tempted by that Nikon ZF It just has an EVF So I was like Nah it's just gonna be the same thing Still a mirrorless feeling At the end of the day right This is the problem Like you You're talking You're always talking about a camera That you don't want to buy And then you get talking to me And I never talk you out of it I'm always like Yeah I'm thinking of buying that camera too Here are some points Yep How are you feeling about social media This year Introduction of Threads I like Threads When it first came out And there was hardly anyone on it And it seemed like a fairly small Community of people Everyone was just sharing Each other's photos I was finding new photographers Yeah like Threads was pretty good To begin with And then as millions and millions Of people joined it It just became Twitter I don't see it as any different to Twitter now Yeah I agree I don't have anything to say That's interesting a lot of the time So I don't really have any reason to post it Other than putting pictures on it And I'm like I'm just putting pictures there That I would post on Instagram I've put quite a lot of effort this year Into like trying to break my Instagram addiction And it's gone okay Like I've got this app That if I try and open Instagram It flips on the selfie camera And shows me my own face It's like look at you You pathetic piece of shit I've cut my usage quite dramatically I'm still using it a fair bit But way less I'm generally feeling more positive about it Off the back of that It's for like five years straight I posted at least At least one photo Every day of the year Sometimes like two or three photos in a day Crazy I think this is the first year I've stopped doing that Maybe in the last two years I've just stopped doing that Because it's just not worth it Right The amount of effort you go through In doing that And now I think in the last year It's gotten even worse Because you can't just post one image Right You have to post a carousel You have to pick eight images Or four images So it's even more work I just can't be bothered So glad we started YouTube though Yeah I love how that works Being able to just Quietly work away on something Put it out The algorithm seems fairly good Like it seems I mean you obviously Unfortunately you do have to go a bit bait On the titles and thumbnails I can't believe this happened Yeah maybe it's not that good I don't know It's better than Instagram I think I think it's taken us a while to Get into it Or to maybe use it correctly Right Because I think like when we started We didn't have any idea what we were doing We had this opinion that Well we have to make gear videos right If we make any other videos It's just not going to do well And we want the channel to be successful Yeah completely Like we kind of We just went down like This is how you have to have a YouTube channel You have to get a sponsorship with this person You have to do these kind of videos And we just realized Hey we don't Like we're our own thing It's Framelines We've got the magazine We've got the community Thankfully lots of people support us on Patreon Which is amazing So we don't have to Because making a video takes at least a week Right so you can't just work for free But thankfully like people pick up the magazine People support us on Patreon People buy presets So that frees up the time to make videos And these newer videos seem to be going down Pretty well as well So it's cool to get to this place But yeah it took three years to realize that right Talking about photography is really hard though right That's something that I think is kind of overlooked With photographers on social media Is that we take photos We're not good at writing We're not good at talking We're not good at having opinions We take photos That's kind of how we interact with the world And then to try and get people to see our photos We're forced to have to do all these other things That we're not very good at generally And then when it becomes your job as well You have to get good at talking to clients And quoting and being a proper human and stuff as well So it's like yeah I think with the magazine The thing I find the hardest is When we do our own articles Like trying to write a little Thousand word essay God Yeah it's 500 words But it's not a thousand words 10,000 words I know you hated doing that to begin with But do you look back on it Like you're kind of happy you did that I don't hate it I just want it to be better than it is And I read it back and it sounds like Like a five-year-old talking about their summer holiday When they go back to school Yeah never read it back Never read it back Bye I love you I like you Stop it recording
