Kauai, the fourth largest of the main Hawaiian Islands, is also known by a few other names and descriptions:
The Garden Isle: This is the most popular nickname for Kauai, and it perfectly describes the island's lush, green landscapes, abundant rainforests, and vibrant flora. Kauaʻi o Manokalanipō: This is a traditional Hawaiian epithet, meaning "Kauaʻi of Manokalanipō," referencing an ancient chief. The phrase literally translates to "the innumerable dark heavens." While not exactly a different name, Kauai was also part of what Captain James Cook in 1778 named the "Sandwich Islands" after one of his sponsors. This name encompassed the entire Hawaiian archipelago at the time.
In the Hawaiian language, "Kauaʻi" itself has a couple of possible meanings:
Place around the neck: This meaning comes from a legend where the island was named after a favorite son, and it describes how a father would carry a child. Food season: Another possible translation.
Kauai, also known as the "Garden Isle," offers a diverse range of activities for every type of traveler. Here are some of the top things to do on this beautiful Hawaiian island:
Explore the Natural Wonders:
Witness the Majesty of the Nā Pali Coast: This iconic coastline with its dramatic cliffs, lush valleys, and cascading waterfalls is a must-see. The best way to experience it is by taking a boat tour or a helicopter tour. Boat tours often allow you to get up close to sea caves and even snorkel, while helicopter tours provide breathtaking aerial views. Hike the Trails of Waimea Canyon: Known as the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific," Waimea Canyon offers stunning panoramic views of deep gorges, colorful cliffs, and the Waimea River. There are various hiking trails for all skill levels, from easy overlooks to more challenging descents into the canyon. Discover Hanalei Bay: This picturesque bay on the North Shore is famous for its calm turquoise waters, crescent-shaped beach, and stunning mountain backdrop. It's perfect for swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, and simply relaxing on the sand. Visit Kīlauea Lighthouse: Located at the northernmost point of Kauai, this historic lighthouse is a National Wildlife Refuge. It offers fantastic views of the coastline and is a great spot for birdwatching, especially for seabirds like albatrosses and boobies. Marvel at 'Ōpaeka'a Falls: This easily accessible waterfall is located near the Wailua River and plunges into a serene pool below. It's a great spot for a quick photo opportunity and to appreciate Kauai's lush interior. Experience Kauai's Beauty Up Close:
Relax on Kauai's Beautiful Beaches: Kauai boasts numerous stunning beaches, each with its unique charm. Some popular options include Poipu Beach (known for its snorkeling and monk seal sightings), Hanalei Bay Beach (family-friendly with calm waters), and Ke'e Beach (the gateway to the Kalalau Trail with beautiful views). Explore Botanical Gardens: Given its nickname, Kauai is home to several beautiful botanical gardens. Allerton Garden and McBryde Garden (part of the National Tropical Botanical Garden) showcase diverse plant collections and stunning landscaping. Na ʻāina Kai Botanical Gardens offers unique features like a sculpture park and hardwood plantation. Go Snorkeling or Diving: Kauai's clear waters are teeming with marine life. Welcome to Kauawaii, the oldest of the
Hawaiian Islands. We'll explore some of
its rich history. Most of this beautiful
garden is not accessible by car, like
this amazing waterfall. No problem.
We'll explore by air, by foot, and by
water. Warm Aloha hospitality, beautiful
island tunes by Tahiti Ray and Jason
Allen, and exciting adventures await on
Next Stop Kawaii. The fun starts
now. This is Mount Wal, right? The
rainiest spot in the world. In the
world. In the world. Really cool, right?
Gets about 450 inches of rain. the top
of there uh on average per
year. All right. So, if you guys are
ready to start the nature walk, start
right here. So, Chinese timber bamboo
when it's first starting out grows about
6 to 8 in a day. Crazy. Yeah. And it's
actually a member of the grass family.
This plant, the tarot plant, it actually
turns water into
mercury. What?
Really cool,
[Music]
right? This is sugarcane. Um, grows
about 11 to 20 feet in height, about 2
in in diameter. Um, over this way you
can see we have three sloo gates and
those gates are what we're using to
control the water levels. Uh, we usually
keep the water at about 3 ft deep on
average. Now, I'm going to show you guys
your mode of transportation for today.
non-motorized mode of transportation
will be your flotation device right
here, aka your water tubes. Now, this is
the safest way that you can sit. Okay, I
want you guys to stay like this the
whole ride. Um, I'll let you guys know
when you guys can kind of reposition.
One of the first commands that I want
you guys to follow is lights on, lights
off. So, I want you guys to try it on
right now. Uh, make sure you guys can
turn your lights on and off with your
gloves on. Okay. All right. So, you guys
can head down there and, uh, we got some
twos waiting for you guys. All right.
All right.
[Music]
[Music]
So the actual tubing course, we use 2
and 1/2 miles of the old Hanama Ulu
ditch. And in that 2 and 1/2 miles,
there's five different tunnels. The
longest tunnel is actually about 3/4 of
a mile long. So, you're in that one for
about 15 20 minutes. That's a That's a
fun tour. I love going to the tunnels.
You really have no idea what's coming,
but you do have the headlines. Yes.
Which make you look kind of cool, too.
Y. All right, brother.
[Music]
Kipu Ranch
Adventures. All right, guys. So, aloha
and welcome to Kipu Ranch Adventures. My
name is Mano. I'm going to be your tour
guide for today. Now, um, as for our
trails, we do encounter some, uh, roots,
rocks, ruts, potholes. Now, I tell my
guests, smooth and slow every single
day, but I have one person from every
group who will get to this hill and use
way too much brakes, okay? And they kind
of do this on the way
down. Oh my
god. Oh
no. I'm okay. You're probably going to
have an anxiety attack before you even
reach the bottom. So, definitely one
thing about becoming a passenger. So,
[Music]
Welcome to Keeper Ranch, guys. Welcome
to our office. Not a bad place to work
every day. Our office here is 4,200
acres and it's owned by the Rice family.
Now, if you guys take a look at this
pasture right here, uh right behind me
with this mountain in the backdrop. This
was used in a really famous movie. Does
anyone want to take a guess to what
could have been filmed right out here?
You got it. Jurassic Park 1. Anybody
watch the very first Jurassic Park? All
right. So, if you guys remember, there's
a scene where the scientists and the two
kids are running away from a herd of
dinosaurs. If you guys take a look out
here in the field, that's where most of
that was
[Music]
filmed. I want to first start out by
saying thank you for getting me dirty
from head to toe. You're very welcome.
This isn't the cleanest tour, but it's
definitely fun. Yep. I have pleasure
bringing you guys out here to get you
guys dirty. So, how many people do you
guys run through this every day? There's
a lot of people and there's kids, too, I
noticed. Yeah. Uh, every day we'll we'll
take out anywhere from 80 to 90 people.
The part of this tour is a lot more than
just ATVs, but it's really learning
about the history of the area. Yeah,
this this area here, you know, it's uh
filled with, you know, rich history. So,
that's one thing I love about my job is
being able to share this, you know, with
everyone that comes out to visit. So,
what's next on our adventure? Uh, from
here, we're going to actually head up to
about a,000 ft in elevation. We're going
to take you guys to a real beautiful
spot. Uh, this spot here, an estimated
95% of locos that live on the island
have never been there. or even got to
see what this place looks like. So, uh,
this place we're taking you to next is
going to be a real
[Music]
treat. These three beaches, hardest ones
to get to on the island. Reason for
that, you can't drive or hike in. This
beach is surrounded by private property.
Now, if you guys take a look to the
left, there's a monument there for Mr.
John Waterhouse. Now, this monument here
uh was built for him because he was one
of the owners of this property. Also,
guys, uh that last ridge line there,
that's a southeastern most point of our
our island. If you guys are standing at
that point, uh you face uh southeast,
you're actually going to be right in
line with the rest of the Hawaiian
islands. And on a real clear day, you
can actually see the island of Aahu from
there. So, that's one cool thing about
that
spot. Without a doubt, one of the best
ways to experience the beautiful Garden
Isle is by air with island helicopters.
We're at Man of Vipuna Waterfall, um,
aka Jurassic Falls, which is about 400
ft tall, and it is a privately owned
waterfall, and it's owned by the
Robinson family. Nice. So, how did you
guys get the honor of being the only
helicopter company that gets to actually
land here? Uh, well, we thought of it
first. As you can see, everything's
pristine. Um, we don't got no rubbish
around here. They take care of
everything. They clean it up well. And
um we do a really good tour compared to
everybody else out here. You must love
your job. I like what I do. Every day is
different. I'm guessing every day is
different. I meet people from all over
the world. Where are we going next?
We're going to the Wamea Canyon, which
is uh out towards the west side. And
then uh we'll fly around the canyon.
Then we'll head out north and go to the
Nepali coast. Let's fly away.
[Music]
We are headed to the Wa Canyon. Grand
Canyon of the Pacific. It's a little
greener than the Grand Canyon, but it
really looks a lot like it. I can see
why this has been compared to the Grand
Canyon.
[Music]
So, this is New AA Valley. Aa meaning
the landside right there to the right.
The first two little beaches you're
going to see, there's going to be an
archway right there. That's the one that
James Bond flew through in the band with
the Golden Gun. I'm gonna go ahead and
say you don't see this every day. Just
saying.
This is Wool Falls uh TV show Fantasy
Island.
Welcome my friends to Fantasy
Island. So, we're heading to the wetest
place on the earth. Wild Ali crater.
We're headed there now. So, how many
inches a year do they say? Uh about 450
ines of average rainfall a
[Music]
year. Most of Kawaii is inaccessible by
car. Today, we're checking out the back
country with Outfitters
Kauaii by Kayak. Okay, couple things.
How to hold our paddles. Putting gun on
your head and making a 90 degree angle
is going to be proper position for
yourself. You don't want to be too far
out. You don't want to be too close. And
when you're 90 degree angle and you pull
it down, you should be a little further
than shoulderwidth apart. You're going
to push out with your arm fully
extending the length of your arm,
locking that elbow. Then you're going to
dip the paddle in the water where your
toes would be. You as you pull the water
back towards your hip, you're going to
actually push with the other arm.
So, how far are we paddling down the
river? Um, it's about two and a half
miles and we're going to end at Kaipu
Ranch. It is a 7,000 acre cattle ranch.
It's a working cattle ranch. It's owned
by the Rice
family and it's a really special piece
of land. Um, not a lot of people get to
go there. You have to We lease the land
for our tours, but the only other way to
be on the ranch is to get invited
there.
[Music]
Here we're on uh Keeper Ranch, which is
the property, private property. It's
pretty much been private for all of the
time that there has been land ownership
of property on the islands. By us
actually running tours, it's what helps
them to keep the property without having
to sell it off to developers.
[Music]
This is what they make the poi out of.
Has anybody heard of poi before? Yeah.
Oh part of Ohana. And that would be what
the roots are called. And that's where
they developed the name of Ohana because
they felt that their family were like
the roots of the of the tarot plant. Um,
and you need your strong roots and
foundation and family to grow.
[Music]
So, I knew we were going to go kayaking.
I knew we were going to see a massive
waterfall like this one right here, but
I didn't know we'd have such an
entertaining guide and learn so much
along the way. So, what else does
Outfitters do? Um, we do ziplining. We
also have ocean kaying and a downhill
bike tour. Um, everything that's
involved with kayaking usually has a
hike along with it just to kind of give
a little bit of see the interior of the
island. See the beauty that we have
here. I'm about to touch this water. Oh,
yes, you do it. Uh, I'm going to have
you be there and be your lifeguard cuz a
dry lifeguard is a good lifeguard. All
right, fair enough.
[Applause]
It's our pleasure for Next Stop to be
back on the beautiful islands of Havaii,
especially the beautiful Garden Isle of
Havi and to partner with our good
friends at the Aston Hotels and Resorts.
Harry, good to see you guys again.
Thanks for having us. Mahalo. Thank you
very much. One thing I love about Aston
and and we we see this really all over
Hawaii is the variety of properties.
Absolutely. Hawaii is no different. We
have four beautiful properties here.
Islander on the Beach is a beautiful
place with amazing locations. Very
beautiful oceanfront resort location.
No, I like the fact that your general
manager takes personal care and she goes
out and literally plants these beautiful
flowers on property. She's a a
firecracker of a GM. I have to admit,
Satie is absolutely amazing at her job.
So, we're staying down in Pu. Pu is a
massive property. Again, beautiful
gardens. Absolutely. And beautiful
cliffsides, nice beaches, a lot more
open space, I think. So, and there's
three bedroom houses, condos. Can't go
wrong. Great for big families, large
groups. Kind of something for everybody
in all of the all the Austin chain for
that matter. But one of my favorites, we
stayed there a couple years ago, is the
Wayha Plantation Cottage. Absolutely.
One of my favorites also. Why is it your
favorite? Well, I like the fact that
it's so secluded. It's away from it all.
That's the very end of a long drive. It
doesn't get any better than that. You
can just absolutely be away from
everything. But there's still a lot of
activities though. You guys have an
Aloha book that all the islands have.
Absolutely. And you kind of give people
sort of a a map of what to do. They can
pick and choose their activities.
Ziplining, the the boat tours.
Absolutely. There's a lot to do in Koi.
Now, we're on one of your other
properties here called Aloha Beach. The
Aloha Beach Hotel. And you have actual
live shows with this one. This is
something I didn't know. That is
correct. What are we going to see
tonight shows here? Tonight's we're
featuring our luau. Oh, we'll have kua
pig and that's always a favorite. Uh we
have sweet potatoes, yams, and also my
favorite is the
[Applause]
[Music]
[Applause]
desserts. Tonight we celebrate local
grinds at the fereral pig and local
music with Tahiti Ray and Jason Allen.
So, am I in Kawaii or am I in Ireland? I
feel like I'm in Ireland here. This is
an Irish pub in Lihooie on Kawaii. This
is awesome. Long story long short, uh,
someone told us it was the most
beautiful place on the planet. And so,
we decided to move here. I got a job 38
hours after I got on island. And, um,
and where did you live for 3 weeks? Uh,
3 and a half weeks I spent in my rental
car. Yeah. Um, sleeping on the beach
until I found a place to live. You're
relatively new and the place is jumping.
This is Sunday night. That's awesome.
Sunday night. We just opened about 10
months ago and it's been fantastic. I
think the reason is your food's really
good and your prices behind every great
restaurant are great staff and these
guys are unbelievable. They work really
hard. They're doing amazing things back
there. What do we got here on the table?
Uh this is our boni. So bonino is a a
Vietnamese sandwich. This is actually
our signature burger. But the burger
itself, the patties, 50% kai ground beef
and 50% housem smoked pork shoulder. I
love that you celebrate food, especially
the local ingredients, but you also
celebrate local music. Tonight we have
Tahiti Ray and Jason Allen. This is a
great local music venue. These guys are
Yeah, these guys are awesome. Um yeah,
we we doing music at least every
Thursday and then we're looking to
expand as as we go on.
[Music]
When when you touch my
skin, your
fingertips feel like heaven. When it's
soft
lips, I'm free to be.
So, Kawaii is considered Hawaii's most
romantic island. And today, Tahiti Ray
got to experience some true romance.
Share with us. I got engaged today. Show
it off. Show it off. How awesome is
that? Well, I love it because you do a
song tonight for us that you talk about.
You wrote it for him. I did write it for
And you talk about him getting down on
one knee and it actually happened today.
You teared up at the end of it. I teared
up at the end of it. You get down on one
knee. Say,
"Baby, you're all I
need,
baby, will you marry me?"
Now, Jason, you found Tahiti or did
Tahiti find you? You know what? It's
your voices blend beautifully together.
Both. I think it's a little bit of both.
We've known each other for so long. We
have a lot of mutual friends. I brought
the idea up. It was a little bit of my
idea, I think, to begin with.
And
you. Oh, you love
me with
all you are.
I look at your calendar online and you
guys are gigging all over the place.
Yeah. And and we're so grateful. We
really are. We We're doing what we love.
Um we're happy. Um, and next thing is
just making our own album and making it
happen.
[Music]
