The Kraken is surely the best-known mythological sea monster.
It has been living in the nightmares of Nordic sailors for centuries.
The Kraken is often portrayed as a massive octopus or squid.
Its size can exceed a hundred meters in length,
making it look like a small island when floating on the surface.
Legend has it that the Kraken dwells in the waters between Norway and Iceland.
The giant octopus inhabited the ocean depths
and only rose to the surface to feed or attack anyone who desecrated the seas.
As pirates were seen as degenerate individuals,
they were the creature's prime targets.
The Kraken would strike without warning,
and with its powerful tentacles,
it could break a large ship in half without much trouble.
The crew would be snatched up and then swallowed by the creature.
It was impossible to fight it.
Not even the biggest whales could outrun its wrath
and ended up being gobbled up.
Whenever a ship disappeared in the ocean,
the Kraken was always among the suspects.
The monster's inspiration for the myth surely comes from the giant squid,
which can measure more than 15 meters.
The giant creature has inspired countless works of fiction,
such as Jules Verne's Giant Octopus and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
Game of Thrones' George Martin used the Kraken
to represent House Greyjoy of the Iron Islands.
The monster also features in the movie Pirates of the Caribbean,
Dead Man's Chest.
But the film that brought the creature into pop culture
was 1981's Clash of the Titans.
Although not part of Greek mythology,
the creature takes the place of Ceto,
which was a primordial creature in Greek mythology.
Like the Kraken, Ceto symbolizes the dangers of the seas.
The creature was summoned to devour Princess Andromeda,
who had been given as a sacrifice to save her city.
The Kraken bears witness to the human infatuation
with the mysteries of the sea.
It embodies our fears of the uncharted depths and the unknown.
Whilst modern science has shed light on many of the mysteries
that were once attributed to mythical creatures,
the Kraken stands as an enduring symbol
of the power and mystery of the ocean,
serving as a reminder that there is still much
we do not know about the blue depths that shroud our planet.
