Well, my dears, in German there are a lot of idioms, which also occur very often.
And today we're going to look at a few very widespread ones. Stay with us!
We're about to take an authentic headline. You can immediately test what that means.
The ball is now lying with Friedrich Merz.
What do you think, what does that mean?
The ball is lying with someone. What does it have to do with the ball?
In fact, it's a change of speech and it means that the responsibility or the
decision now lies with a certain person or a certain party or with
whoever. That means in this case, Friedrich Merz now has this
responsibility to make a decision. So he has this decision-making power.
We also see that further in the article. I read ahead. It is unclear whether Friedrich
Merz is willing to move to many places where we as the SPD want solutions for the citizens,
whether he is willing to move there. So that means the ball is now lying with him.
He has to think about it. He has to make this decision, whether he is willing to.
A new government is currently forming in Germany and a coalition has to be formed there.
And of course a lot of compromises have to be made and so on. And that's what this is about.
I'll give you a few more examples. Let's say you work in a company and now you
as a team have made a proposal about what the development could look like in the next few months.
And then you say, we have made our proposal. Now the ball is in the
management. What does that mean? We have now done our best, we have made a proposal
and now the management has to make this final decision. But you can use this
proposal not only in this political or business context,
but also in a private context. For example, you can say, I have now sent Clara my
apology and now the ball is with her whether she accepts it. That means now she has to
think about whether she is willing to accept this apology. Let's take the second
change of speech, namely the second headline. Money is half the battle. What does that mean?
Does that have anything to do with your rent for an apartment? No, being half the battle means being an important
factor in achieving a certain goal or fulfilling a task.
But half the battle, that means that it is not the only factor for success.
That means there are other factors. I am going to read the article here as well.
Even if the EU states agree that they have to invest more money in defense,
a full cash flow alone is not enough. It now needs a management team that invests the money responsibly.
That means it is very important that the money is there. It is a very important factor for
success, but we also need a management team. And you can always use this change of speech in this sense.
I'll give you two more examples, let's say from the context of the study. To learn for the exam
is half the battle. You have to be able to apply this knowledge. Or another example from the
business context. A very good team is half the battle for a successful project. What does that mean?
A very good team is a very important factor, but unfortunately not everything. There are other factors.
Next, we take the change of speech, standing on tiptoe. Here is a headline, the world is standing on tiptoe,
but we are moving away. What does that mean? Standing on tiptoe means being in a very
insecure and dangerous position. So really being just about to fail or tiptoe.
And here it means that the world is currently in a very dangerous position and we are still
dealing with secondary things and not really with important things. You can always use this change of speech
in this sense, not just in any political context. For example, you talk about a
boyfriend and say his employment contract has still not been extended. So his career in the club is
on the tiptoe. That means his employment contract has still not been extended and that is why it is
very uncertain whether his career can be continued at all. Another example of whether the
festival can take place is because of financial problems on the tiptoe. That means it is very
uncertain, especially due to financial difficulties. We look at the next step or
the next change of speech. What does that mean? First of all,
factions are certain groups in the Bundestag. To offer someone or something on the tiptoe
means to take an active action against something, to resist. So really
actively and determinedly opposing something. In this case, this means that these
certain groups in the Bundestag are ready to take an active action against right-wing populism,
i.e. to resist. And this phrase or this change of speech usually emphasizes
this determination. It is so expressive and emotional, you could say. For example, a
friend of yours tells you that he experienced a bit of discrimination or even bullying at work
and then you say, so you definitely have to offer bullying on the tiptoe and not be intimidated.
That means you have to take an active action against it and not be intimidated by something like that.
Or another example from the political context. The young politician bowed his critics to the tiptoe
and defended his position. That means he was determined to resist and
to defend his opinion. Next, we take this headline. Pauschalreisen,
wenn Urlauber auf der Strecke bleiben. What does it mean to stay on track? This change of speech is
often used to show that something or someone is experiencing certain problems or
is disadvantaged or is in trouble. In this case, it was about a travel
organizer who went bankrupt. You think to yourself, yes, I'm insured and so on, but
people still experience difficulties, of course, because they, for example, get stuck at the destination.
So you can always use this change of speech in the sense of experiencing difficulties and
having problems. For example, a very classic example, if you don't continue to educate yourself, you
will eventually get stuck on the track. That means that at some point sooner or later you will have certain
difficulties, yes, just to stay up to date, I'll tell you. Another example, due to the
rapid development in IT, older employees often get stuck on the track.
That means they then experience great difficulties getting in there because they are not able to
possibly grasp this development. And last but not least, today we are taking another headline with the
future chancellor. Yes, because so much is currently happening here politically. March is stuck in the
clamp. Staying in the clamp. This change of speech means that someone is really under pressure,
is in a very difficult situation and sometimes you don't know if you should get out at all.
So March has to make a lot of difficult decisions and go through a lot at the moment.
That means you can always use this change of speech in this sense. I'll give you a few more examples.
Let's say when the company registered for bankruptcy, many employees were stuck in the
clamp. That means many employees got into a very difficult situation and of course
had big problems. Or you talk to a friend and say, because of his lies, Lukas is currently
stuck in the clamp. That means, because of his lies, he is currently in a very unfavorable
position and you don't even know if he can get out of there at all. So, everyone, we are
already at the end of this video. I would like to thank you very much for watching and I would be very happy
about your support. As you know, this is the most important thing so that I can continue to
provide high-quality videos for you. We'll see you in the next video.
I wish you all the best! Bye!
