Mother's Day Half Marathon kicks off in Whately

And as we know, today is Mother's Day and that means today is the Western Mass Mother's Day half marathon, raising awareness for motherhood and maternal health. 20 News reporter Sarah Bianame joins us live in Wheatley with a look at the event. Claire, the 15th annual half marathon is raising money for a nonprofit called Cancer Connection right here in Western Massachusetts. This organization provides a support group for individuals and families who are dealing with a cancer diagnosis. They offer free services like support groups, therapy, and educational programs. It's a cause that is close to the heart of the race director. Last year, more than 30 local business sponsors, 450 participants, and dozens of volunteers helped raise over $90,000 to support the nonprofit from the race. So this year, the race kicked off at 8 a.m. at the Yankee Candle production facility in Weightley. It ends at the police station. 30 minutes before the race, there was a nine mile walk and fun run for those who weren't long-distance runners. Since 2010, this race has raised more than $700,000 for cancer connection. Working for you in Weightley, Sarah Bianame, 22 News.
