Hello everyone! Today I would like to introduce you to a few prepositions with the dative for advanced learners.
If you already speak German quite well, then you already know the most important prepositions with the dative.
So aus, nach, mit, außer, zu and so on.
This video is not about these prepositions.
We are now looking at prepositions for higher language levels, i.e. B2, C1, C2.
You can use these prepositions particularly well when you write in German and want to express yourself particularly well.
And when you have learned them, you can of course also understand more difficult texts in German better.
The first preposition I would like to introduce you to is to love.
To love means to do someone a favor or to make someone happy.
For example, Katja moved to Berlin because of her boyfriend.
So Katja wanted her boyfriend to be happy and that's why she moved to Berlin.
Maybe she didn't really want to, but she did it for her boyfriend, her boyfriend to love.
We also use to love quite often with the personal pronouns.
So, for example, I only go to the theater to love you.
That means I don't really feel like it, but I go with you to make you happy.
That means I know you don't feel like coming to the party, but please do me a favor, do me a favor and come with me.
To love is always followed, i.e. it is always after the noun or personal pronoun.
So you can't say to love you or to love your boyfriend.
That doesn't work. To love always has to be at the back.
You already know the preposition towards as a local preposition.
For example, the train station is opposite the post office, i.e. on the other side of the post office.
But we can also use this preposition when we talk about the personal relationship of people.
For example, Daniel was always very friendly to my mother.
That means Daniel was always very friendly to my mother.
Or I am very distrustful of him.
That means I don't trust him, I distrust him.
You can use this preposition in front of or after the noun or the pronoun.
Daniel was always very friendly to my mother is also a correct sentence.
Before we continue, I have a favor to ask of you.
Some of you have written to me that they would like more videos about grammar.
Write me in the comments below if you would like to see more videos about prepositions
and which other grammar topics you are interested in for advanced learners.
Then I can go into my next videos.
So, and now we go on with the next preposition.
The next preposition is accordingly.
Accordingly means in agreement with something.
Let's look at an example sentence.
Our boss wants a big anniversary party.
I should organize everything according to his wishes.
That means I should organize the party the way my boss wants it.
He may have already told me that he wants a big buffet and a cake.
These are his wishes and I should fulfill these wishes.
You can see here that the preposition is accordingly behind the noun.
Sometimes it is also in front of the noun.
So you could also say, I should organize everything according to his wishes.
I personally always put this preposition behind the noun.
That's just a matter of taste.
Another example sentence would be, the saleswoman tells the customer
that he can adjust the new car according to his ideas.
So the customer buys a new car and he has certain ideas
about what his car should look like, what colors it should have,
whether it should have an air conditioning system and so on.
And the saleswoman then tells him that he can adjust the car
so that his wishes, his ideas are fulfilled.
Or another example, the negotiation went according to his expectations.
That means the negotiation went as he had expected it to.
A special expression with accordingly,
which is often used and heard in colloquial language,
is, according to the circumstances, good.
You can often answer the question, how are you?
Or how is another person doing?
So, for example, I heard that Paula had an accident.
How are you?
And then the answer comes, yes, you are doing well according to the circumstances.
This means that Paula is doing as well as possible in this situation.
Of course she doesn't feel great, because she had an accident,
but it could be much worse for her.
And we express that when we say, according to the circumstances, good.
In this special expression, according to the circumstances, good,
this is never in front of the noun.
So we don't say, according to the circumstances, you are doing well.
In addition, you would never say, according to the circumstances, bad.
You always use the expression only with good.
Let's continue with the preposition according.
With according I can say where I have information from.
For example, according to the weather forecast, it will snow tomorrow.
That means it will snow tomorrow and I know that from the weather forecast.
Or according to this newspaper article, the chancellor has traveled to Italy.
So we know from the article that the chancellor has traveled.
Or according to her brother, Katrin was in Italy last week.
In the examples you can see that according is always followed.
By the way, you can use this preposition wonderfully in written German.
So if you have to summarize information from a text or a graphic in an exam,
then you can write according to this text, according to this statistic, according to this study, and so on.
The prepositions samt and mitsamt mean the same thing,
namely together with, exclusively or inclusive.
They are actually only used in writing.
So you only hear them very rarely in spoken German.
An example sentence would be
Er hat sich ein riesiges Haus samt einer großen Garage und einem schönen Swimmingpool gekauft.
That means exactly the same as
Er hat sich ein riesiges Haus mit einer großen Garage und einem schönen Swimmingpool gekauft.
Or
Der Mann ist mitsamt seinen vier Kindern verschwunden.
Or
Katrin hat ihren Geldbeutel samt 100 Euro und ihrem Ausweis verloren.
Or also
Ich fahre an Weihnachten mit meiner Schwester samt Kindern in den Skiurlaub.
