The Dalton Highway leads to North Americas most northern drivable point. The only problem? Mud.
All right, back to the road. Oh my god, it's bad. It's bad
Yeah
It's pretty bad
I don't even sure if I use my signal if anybody could see anything right now
My journey around the planet begins at North America's most northern drivable point
The plan is to ride through Canada and America before crossing over to Europe
From there, I'll make my way through the Middle East and Asia
After island hopping through Indonesia, it'll be Australia and finally, New Zealand
The end of my journey will be marked by the southernmost point of the South Island
I'm calling it the big spiral and this is act two to an Alaskan beginning
well, the sun's out today and I'm pretty happy about that because
Yesterday was a bit of a muddy mess and I think today might still be too but it means it'll only get better. So
Yeah, I'm really excited today
I have to go north because my goal is to get to the most northern drivable point in North America, Prudhoe Bay
So let's have a look at the map and see what we can see. So yesterday I left Big Delta
Went through Fairbanks got some groceries and then got right to the start of the Dalton Highway right here
And then just camped a little bit down this road towards Manly hot springs
So now I'm just gonna backtrack a little bit and then start my day on the Dalton Highway
And there's a couple main stops. I need to stop at so right here. There should be gas at
Yukon camp and
Then the next one is going to be all the way up here at Coldfoot
And if you look at where Coldfoot is that gets me about halfway to Prudhoe Bay
So it's gonna be a long ride today, but I'm excited
I think it's going to be hell of adventure and
We'll see what happens
All right on the road again
Last night was a little bit cold, but not too bad
It was mostly the mosquitoes. The mosquitoes are quite bad around here. And I guess with all the rain they just they're going off right now
All right, and back to the Dalton Highway with a left turn here
paved for now
Even dry
Oh, no, never mind, it's gravel
Yeah, still lots of ruts, but it has dried a little
Oh, this is muddy. Oh
I have to get a shot here. Oh, it's so muddy. This is the classic sign
Gateway to the Arctic, road to Prudhoe Bay. Okay
Cool. Oh, look at the mud. Slime over hardpack. Okay
Oh
This is good times look I'm riding around in the mud. Oh
God it's cool. You can just get on your motorcycle and you can drive here
That's pretty cool, right
Maybe I'll take my helmet off too. That'd be good. There we go
Good times, good times. Getting hungry already
Very exciting, very exciting
All right back to the road, oh my god, it's bad it's bad
Pretty glad I got those tires on. Yeah, it's it's pretty bad
So apparently the trucks
They all talk to each other and they'll talk about you
Whether they're riding in the middle or the side or whatever whether they're pulling over and as a result
Apparently they'll if you're if you're treating them with respect, they'll treat you with respect and they're communicating that so
so I
Try to be a good boy, so I don't get run over
It's a little hard to see any definition in the road with the Sun behind me
Just looks just looks brown to me
Going downhill. I think he'll be faster
It's gotten a lot better here because it's all in the Sun so it's drying out
Motorcycles use extreme caution. It's actually really good up here. It's almost like it didn't rain but look to the side. It's pretty muddy
And now we're coming into the shade it's a lot more wet
Wow that the truck up there is actually kicking up dust now, it's quite the change
Pretty wet down here. Oh, they must be grading it
Wow, it's page
What's going on here
There's a parking thing
Yeah, I'm gonna I'm gonna have a snack here
I'll have to say so far. It's been pretty good this morning
It's it was a bit wet and muddy and but not as bad as yesterday for sure
But now it's drying out and actually this bits paved which is almost a little bit disappointing
I was really enjoying riding the the dirt. Yeah, I don't know
It's not so bad
No, I I I'm actually I'm really glad I got the tires on the bike
I think they're helping a lot compared to the last ones. The last ones were like skating all over the place
One thing is I'm a little worried about the bike and just all the dirt
Let me show you
So like the chain I gave it a good oil this morning
But it just gets covered in dirt and you can think of dirt as like sandpaper or an abrasive
Basically, every time it's rotating around and there's dirt on there
It's just taking a little shaving off the chain and and the the gears and all that
So it's a bit hard on the bike that way
and then
The other thing I'm worried about is the seals so you can see they're working well right now because it's pushing all the dirt
down there
Which means it's not going inside. There's nothing getting dragged in but otherwise the bike is good. Just very dirty
These I don't even sure if I use my signal if anybody can see anything right now
My brake as well
But I guess that's just how it's gonna have to be
Pretty sure everybody's got the same problem on this highway. So
Part of the future, right?
Alright, let's keep going. Let's get to Yukon camp
I see gravel again
That's in good shape
They're so hardcore
All right arriving at Yukon camp and I should be able to get some gas here, I think
Our first thing I have to do is apparently leave my credit card in
there
Hi, I was hoping to get some gas
What's up
Sounds good. Thank you. Okay
So now she has my card I go fill up
so I did 200 K from since the last fill up and I could probably make it to the next gas station, but
You never know what's gonna happen. So I
Unleaded
So last time I paid what was it three something a gallon now, it's seven
$7 49 9
Which is almost double, but I guess that's how things go here
Luckily, I don't need much
And then I have to take a picture
This is the method here I have to take a picture of
How much I bought?
$11 70 cents, then I walk back
Oh, I think it's 1170
Yeah, receipt. I know I'm good. Thank you. Thank you
And that's how you kick gas at Yukon River camp
cool
Let's keep going north to cold foot
All right
Upwards and onwards northwards and onwards
Actually took a bunch of layers off because oh my god, it's really warm right now
So I wasn't sure how much to take off, but I'm still wearing two pairs of pants right now
But it is nice to get in the moving air again
I
Might have to pass my first truck. Oh, it's so dusty
Oh
Arctic Circle, I have to see this
That'd be great yeah, thank you
Is this is the rug part of the tour our tour but you can stand okay
You've come a long way you should have a picture I should yeah
Where are you from?
Asheville North Carolina. No, I was in Asheville Bellingham, Washington. Oh both are amazing places. Yeah, I've been to both. Oh, yeah
You have good taste
They're pretty the demographics are very similar yeah, I'm a mountain biker so they're both awesome
Sweet thank you so much
All right, well this is
Pretty sure the most north I've ever been maybe with the exception of being in a plane, but that doesn't count
so the Arctic Circle is really cool because
Basically, once you go north of this point
It's summer solstice. The Sun will not set and
In winter solstice, the Sun will not rise
Which I think is so cool
And basically it's because
When the earth is orbiting the Sun
It's orbiting on a slight angle
so in the winter
the top of the planet is
pointing away from the Sun and
Then in the summer the top of the planet is pointing a little bit towards the Sun
so basically
That means in the summer because it's pointing towards the Sun you're getting you're getting 24-hour light
because the Sun is at such an angle that it just will never set and
Then in the winter, you know, it's basically the opposite. Basically. It's pointing away from the Sun. It's always in shade
Like if you watch like nature documentaries or whatever
BBC don't have these beautiful time-lapses of the Sun just doing a
Circle and it'll just get close to the horizon and then just come back up
So it's so cool
But yeah
I'm now north of the Arctic Circle
So if you think of a basketball on the top of the basketball
I'm near the top of the basketball. I'm not around the
the waist of it, I guess
I'm near the top which is cool to think
Look at those mountains. I'm gonna be heading over those mountains tomorrow. I'm pretty sure
Anyways, I'll shut up now. On to Coldfoot
Entering Coldfoot, I suppose
There's the gas station
Hey, I'm on pump number two
Thank you
Got the gas and so now we're gonna go to camp spot
Tonight is a paid one
I'm just gonna go have a look because if there's a lot of mosquitoes, then I
may want to change
to a different campsite, but
Marin Creek campground. Oh, this looks like a
Yes, BLM campground, which is cool
Look at these little trees
Cute little trees. They don't grow so big here
Awesome, let's see how the bugs are
Okay, well the mosquitoes are here but they're not too bad not nearly as bad as the last camp
Also, I'm
There's people around and I'm a little embarrassed to be talking to a camera by myself
So I gotta talk a little bit quietly
Okay, today started out
super sketchy
But then it got
When everything dried out it got awesome. It was just like I don't know
I feel like I've gained new confidence on the motorbike, you know, like I'm like, oh, yeah, just ride this
So that kind of thing
But yeah, overall I just enjoyed the ride today
I think tomorrow is gonna be like the
Knock you over the head with with beauty and awe and all that stuff
so but maybe we should have a look at the map and
Well, we'll talk about what we got up to today. Okay, here's our map of Alaska
So last night I kept near liver good and then drove through the mud through the mud
And then around here it got pretty good actually and then I arrived at a Yukon camp it's not labeled on the map
but it should be and then
Kept going up kept going up kept going up. It kept going up to our Arctic Circle and it's kind of cool because you can
see on the map
This is the Arctic Circle and then we drove up up up up up up
To cold foot and then tomorrow is gonna be a massive day all the way up to the Arctic Ocean
So tomorrow is gonna be a big one about 400 kilometers. I know that's gonna be pushing it for me a little bit but
Today was already by the end of I was like, oh, I'm getting tired. I'm getting tired. So
Yeah, so tomorrow might be a little harder, but I also hear that there could be some pretty cool wildlife
Hopefully like musk ox and caribou and and so and oh the
The the flag lady at the construction the other day was talking about like blonde grizzly bears and stuff
I'd like to see galanta. I'd like to see a blonde grizzly bear for sure. But yeah, anyways
There's a red button down below. I'll just mention it. You don't have to
and
But anyways, thank you for watching the video. I hope you watch the next one too. I hope to see you in the next one
but anyways
Until next time. Bye. Bye
