Can you imagine how it felt to hit the open road after 5 months stuck in a mechanics....The road is calling, Where to??? Who cares!!!
Hi, I'm Ben. Meet Alaska, the Caribbean explorer and his capito, our Chilean buff.
For the next few years, this is our house. The world is our garden and you are our family.
We don't know the time of day or where we'll wake up tomorrow. All we know is we're on the
ride of our lives, most of the time. So join us and see what unfolds on this epic adventure.
Last time on Astra Alaska, we moved into a Mexican mechanics and attempted the impossible
to put right everything that was wrong with our Kombi once and for all. However,
the project was our biggest challenge so far and we soon found ourselves trapped
during five months of our lives.
Now I'm going to go over there and cry. So as we got ready to continue exploring,
well, you can probably imagine excitement levels were at an all-time high.
It's difficult to describe the exact feeling when that moment arrived.
For all of the work, months of frustration and disappointment was about to be rewarded.
The road was calling. I can't even begin to describe the excitement we had
for leaving the mechanics. As soon as we got out, we drove as far as we could before Christmas day.
Kombi life spirits were high as we accepted whatever the road brought us.
We finally made it out of Tapachula. We spent last night in
and with everything, all the stuff we need for Christmas, we just need to buy some meat.
We've pulled up in the middle of nowhere and midway through cooking eggs, we've run out of gas.
And everything's wet so we've taken to burning our Spanish nights.
All we wanted for Christmas was to be as far away from the mechanics as possible.
We settled quickly back into the routine, making the most of nature when we could.
Then we went in search of the perfect Kombi Christmas. We had no idea where we stopped last night.
This girl has just come up to us and given us a bunch of tamales
and some stuff for starting the fire a bit better and said Feliz Navidad.
It's a Christmas spirit for you. Alaska and I arranged a treasure hunt for Sian.
Which ended in a video message. This year you definitely deserve a decent present. Here it is.
That just left a small matter of me killing my first animal. Oh ----.
And the best meal we've eaten in about forever.
Yeah baby I had the best day ever. Best Christmas I've ever had.
Merry Christmas me and my Santa.
The further we headed into the Guatemalan mountains, the more remote and rugged it became.
The kids, as always, immediately fell in love with Alaska.
The roads in these parts were the worst we've seen since Bolivia.
The Kombi had no chance, so we opted for a white-knuckled ride on public transport.
Incredibly, we met our first English-speaking people in almost six months.
As we hiked the Guatemalan jungle paths together, we could see the water collecting,
gaining momentum and charging into an underground river,
only to emerge in one of the most beautiful places we've ever seen.
The natural jungle oasis of Zamoc Champi is incredible.
Once we'd seen the view from the top, we couldn't wait to cool off.
I heard that Zamoc Champi was the most beautiful place in the whole of Guatemala,
and it is. It's so stunning and it's a must for everyone coming to Guatemala.
We had such a great time hanging out with these girls, Andrea, Becky and Amy.
It's not every day that you meet three girls with no other plans than to head south and
embrace the adventure. We'll definitely be following their video blog to see what
their epic journey brings them. Happy travels, chicas!
Blanquín turned out to be the perfect sleepy place for us to spend the holidays.
We're on our way to northern Guatemala and some pretty remote villages,
and this is what we've got to deal with.
Now, we just have the small matter of Central America's worst road
between us and the tropical Caribbean. Hopefully, we'll see you there.
Next time on Hasta Alaska, we reach Guatemala's Caribbean coast and its combi life at its best.
More beautiful locations, more culture, more surprises, new friends and lots more fun.
Until then, happy travels!
