Willkommen zu GermanPod101.com
the place where you can learn German in a practical, funny and, yes, joyful way.
I'm Elysia, your German coach.
In today's lesson, we will talk about German proverbs.
So this lesson is for intermediate learners.
Wir reden heute über deutsche Sprichwörter.
Das heißt, dieser Kurs ist für fortgeschrittene Lerner.
Also für, ja, mittelstufige Lerner.
Auf Deutsch heißt proverb in German means das Sprichwort.
Sprichwort oder die Redewendung.
These are like expressions, idioms in German.
Why should you learn German proverbs?
Actually, when you are aware of German proverbs, you show that you are part of the culture,
you understand the culture and you know how to use these proverbs in daily conversations
because we use them quite often.
And the ones I choose for you are the ones we use quite commonly every day.
Okay?
Also die Sprichwörter helfen euch auch in täglichen Situationen.
Wenn ihr sie richtig anwenden könnt, könnt ihr damit zeigen,
dass ihr auch in die deutsche Kultur schon eingetaucht seid.
So let's talk about a few proverbs in German.
Die Bedeutung is the meaning.
So with every proverb, I will give you also the meaning behind it.
Die Bedeutung, meaning.
And also the origin where this proverb might come from, if we know the source or not.
Origin is die Herkunft.
Die Bedeutung, meaning.
Die Herkunft, the origin.
Sprichwort is a proverb.
Lasst uns über das erste Sprichwort sprechen.
Ich verstehe nur Bahnhof.
I understand just train station.
Sounds weird, but this is a very common German expression.
Es klingt sehr komisch, aber es ist ein sehr gängiges deutsches Sprichwort.
The origin actually comes after the war.
When we had many soldiers who were missing their families in Germany,
they were thinking about the train station to go back to see their families,
which is why we have the origin, like the origin of this expression is
Ich verstehe nur Bahnhof.
I don't understand anything, I'm just thinking about the train station.
Habt ihr das verstanden?
Die Soldaten in Deutschland haben ihre Familien vermisst
und haben nur an den Bahnhof und nichts anderes gedacht.
Ich verstehe nur Bahnhof.
Okay.
Die nächste Redewendung ist
Hunde, die bellen, beißen nicht.
Hunde, dogs, die bellen, that bark,
beißen nicht, don't bite.
Dogs, that bark, don't bite.
Hunde, die bellen, beißen nicht.
Was bedeutet dieser Spruch?
What does it mean, this expression?
Hunde, die bellen, beißen nicht.
That means if someone wants to harm you or plan something bad with you,
he won't tell it to you in advance, out loudly.
Wenn jemand dir etwas Schlechtes tun will, dann wird er es dir vorher nicht laut sagen.
So usually you don't have to worry so much if someone,
yes, tells you to do whatever with you,
harassing you because he might actually just talk and not do the action behind it.
Hunde, die bellen, beißen nicht.
Okay.
Habt ihr dieses Sprichwort verstanden?
Nächstes Sprichwort.
Scherben bringen Glück.
Was sind Scherben?
Das sind Scherben.
Glass Scherben.
The broken glass.
Scherben bringen Glück.
Glück is happiness or joy or good luck, actually.
So broken glasses bring good luck.
Warum reden wir über dieses Sprichwort?
Actually, they used to believe that with broken glasses,
you can avoid bad spirits in your house.
So that's the origin.
Das ist die Herkunft über dieses Sprichwort.
Scherben bringen Glück.
Gestern ist meine Autoscheibe kaputt gegangen
und mit etwas Humor habe ich nur gesagt, Scherben bringen Glück.
Actually, my car window broke yesterday
and to motivate myself, I just said, okay,
broken glass will bring me some luck.
Okay.
Nächstes Sprichwort ist
Stille Wasser sind tief.
Silent waters are deep.
Stille Wasser sind tief.
Die Bedeutung von diesem Sprichwort ist
schüchterne Personen verstecken meistens ihre Fähigkeiten
und dann als Überraschung können sie zum Beispiel
ja, viele Talente vorweisen.
So a person who is actually quite shy
might surprise you with a hidden talent
and that's why deep waters can,
silent waters can be deep.
This expression comes from Mother Nature.
Kommt aus der Natur, weil wenn wir zum Beispiel auf dem Meer sind
und die Wasseroberfläche sehr flach ist,
kann es trotzdem starke Strömungen unter Wasser geben,
was sehr gefährlich ist.
So in Mother Nature, if you see a flat surface of the water,
you can still have very strong currents
that can be dangerous for you.
This is also the origin from Mother Nature,
why we say Stille Wasser sind tief.
Let's talk about the next one.
Der Apfel fällt nicht weit vom Stamm.
Der Apfel is the apple,
doesn't fall far from the tree,
fällt, fall, nicht weit, not far away
vom Stamm, from the tree, stem.
Das bedeutet, dass Kinder meistens ihren Eltern sehr ähnlich sind.
That means that kids are usually quite similar to their parents.
Zum Beispiel, wenn deine Eltern im Gefängnis waren
oder illegale Sachen machen,
dann ist es für die Kinder meistens auch schwierig,
die Regeln zu befolgen.
If your parents don't really respect the rules,
then the children also might not respect the rules.
For example.
Okay, der Apfel fällt nicht weit vom Stamm.
Gut, dann reden wir über das nächste Spruchwort.
Eine Hand wäscht die andere Hand.
One hand washes the other hand.
Diese Redewendung benutzen wir, um zu sagen,
dass wir uns gegenseitig helfen sollen.
This expression is used when we want to say
that we should help each other.
Ich tue dir einen Gefallen und du tust etwas Gutes für mich.
So if I do you a favor, usually the other person
also would like to do something nice for you.
Eine Hand wäscht die andere Hand.
Okay.
Und das nächste Sprichwort ist
Auf Regen folgt Sonnenschein.
Regen is rain.
Sonnenschein is sunshine.
And I think you can imagine what this expression means.
Diese Redewendung heißt, wenn dir etwas Schlechtes passiert,
passiert danach meistens etwas Gutes.
So if something bad happens to you,
there can only be coming times that are better.
Times will just get better after a bad time.
Okay.
So Auf Regen folgt Sonnenschein.
After rain comes sunshine.
It will get better.
It can't get worse.
Okay.
Dann Nummer 8.
Kleider machen Leute.
So clothes, they make people.
Depending how you dress,
people will make an opinion about you.
So I brought you this old t-shirt for example.
Ich ziehe mich jetzt mit einem dreckigen T-Shirt an.
Ich ziehe mir ein dreckiges T-Shirt an und gehe zu einem Jobinterview.
Was würde der Boss von mir denken?
What do you think the boss will think about me
if I would come like this to a job interview?
He will probably think I'm not able to do a task
where you need like proper duties, proper tasks.
Okay.
So Kleider machen Leute.
Clothes make people.
People will have an opinion about you depending how you dress.
Okay.
Nächstes Sprichwort.
Geld regiert die Welt.
Geld is the money, money, money.
Geld, money.
Das hier ist das alte Geld von Deutschland.
Die gute alte deutsche D-Mark.
Und das hier sind tausend D-Mark.
This is the money in Germany before the Euro came.
Geld regiert die Welt.
Money rules the world.
Like basically means who has the money has the power.
Wer Geld hat, hat auch die Macht.
This one is easy and let's come to the last one.
Jemandem etwas in die Schuhe schieben.
To push something in someone else's shoes.
Zum Beispiel habe ich einen Stein, ich mache den in den Schuh.
That means that you want to blame someone else for your mistake.
Also wenn du einen Fehler gemacht hast und aber nicht verantwortlich sein willst,
dann gibst du jemand anderem die Schuld.
You will blame someone else.
Schuld is guilt.
You will put a guilt on someone else.
Jemanden etwas in die Schuhe schieben.
Das ist nicht sehr nett.
That's not really nice.
Okay.
Ich hoffe, die Sprichwörter sind euch behilflich.
I will hope that this expression perhaps will be useful to you in daily life in Germany or somewhere else.
Und natürlich können wir noch weitere Sprichwörter in anderen neuen Videos besprechen.
