We took the Sea Hunt about 30 miles offshore in search of some tasty grouper species. The last time we went out on the boat Michelle caught a red grouper about twice the size of my biggest fish of the day. So you can guess what happened this trip, lol.
All large fish were landed with rods from Chaos Fishing, check then out here: https://chaosfishing.com

We are here at Joe Bayou's boat ramp in
Dest, Florida. We're getting ready to
launch the sea hunt. Uh it's just about
100% done with its makeover, but we're
going to go ahead and go out again today
and uh we're going to do a little
distance today. We're going to go out 30
35 miles, do some deep dropping, do some
trolling. Hopefully some blue water's
pushing. Maybe we can get into uh
something special today. But, uh,
Michelle's coming with us
today and Brock, so this will be
Michelle's first long long trip out on
the boat. So, uh, we made sure and
brought her special throne, the bean
bag. So, uh, we're going to get started
and, uh, we'll see you guys on the
water.
So, first things first, we had to stop
and catch some live bait. We wanted to
fill the live well up. Oh, wow. All
right. Good job,
hun. Here. Here. Swing it over. Get them
over the boat, honey. Lift your rod up.
There you go. That way we don't lose
them if they fall off.
These are cigar minnows. Everything eats
cigar minnows. I was all the way on the
bottom. These are fatties. So, lucky for
us today, there was no trouble finding
the bait. Few more stringers like that.
Yeah, they're good. Now they're back
behind us. All right, guys. We got
filled up on bait. I don't know. We
probably got 50 60 baits in there. So,
we're going to batten down the hatches
and head out. Get started
fishing. Your throne is ready. Even
fluffed it up for you.
Here. No, we got a weed patch here.
Could be some mahi. We're almost here.
So, just a couple miles out of the pass,
we came across a nice weed patch and
decided to see if there was anything
hanging out under it.
Come on.
First of the year, baby.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Not a big one, but
very cool. First
mahi. Dang. Oh, there's a ton of them.
Look at them all. Oh my
gosh. Oh, that's We'll keep that. That's
not a bad one. It's not a monster, but
you got anything rigged up? Got that
siki
off. Quit bleeding everywhere.
Um, you got Is there like black bag?
There's leader. All there we go again.
Uh there's leader in the Look on the rod
holders. Oh, this a bit better
one. Look at them all.
Michelle, you see them? Yeah. No, not
any bigger. Oh, that might smaller. That
one was smaller. Yeah, but he fought
harder. It's There you go then. Yeah,
there you go. Yeah, you don't have Oh,
there you go. Why? When he's pulling
line, don't. You got a good one. Don't
Don't reel while it's pulling line. When
you hear that now, reel now. Reel now.
But when you hear the When you hear that
noise, don't reel. Okay. Oh, that's a
bigger one. Oh, yeah. Oh, look how
beautiful they are.
Did it get off? Yep.
Oh my gosh.
Oh, he hit it on
top. There you
go. There you go. Nice and steady.
Oh, got a jumper. Keep rolling.
You can come up here if you want.
This was Michelle's real first trip
offshore, so obviously this was her
first shot at a mahi. She'd never caught
one before.
Oh, what a pretty one.
Got him. Michelle's first
mahi. Good job, hun.
All
right, hold that pole out. There you go.
Wasn't expecting that, were we? No.
Oh, there they are. They're They're all
underneath us.
Oh, yeah.
They're Where are they?
Oh, got him.
I got more of those spoons in there,
Brock.
I think I can flip this one. Honey, just
stay back.
That one's probably too little.
What in the what? How did he do that?
Oh, now I
see. Jeez.
What? Look what he did to me. Oh. Oh, I
thought that was in your finger.
No. Got them. Oh, so I dropped the jig
down to see if there are any big ones
hanging out underneath the school. I'll
just put one of those on then.
You know where these mahi? You need Oh,
dang. Oh, they're hitting the mahi are
hitting my jig.
There's a bunch of them down there. Got
them on the jig. Mah on the jig.
Do you have your own water? No.
There we go.
That one's too small. Ow. God dang it.
Trying to grab them. Oh, yeah. Good
idea.
There we go.
Come
up out right here.
Here they come. Got them on the
jig. Little guy.
These colors though are amazing on
these. Look how blue that one is.
Why? Uh probably cuz they're slloshing
around so hard in the live
well. All right, let's let him come up.
I can feel them hitting it. Ah,
that one ain't coming loose.
Oh, yeah.
That'll be easy to unhook. There you go.
All right, I'm good. I think we got
enough mahi. What do you think? I think
so. I don't want to clean a bunch of
those.
All right, guys. We just caught a bunch
of little chicken dolphin. We kept about
eight or nine. Make some sandwiches, but
uh we're going to head on out to the
reef
spot. I want. So after we got out there
and dropped, my first drop did not go
the way I wanted. What?
No. Cut me. Damn. All the way up.
Hope it wasn't a
shark. Really? We were hoping that
wasn't a shark because this is one of
our favorite grouper spots. And if a
shark's there, then we're just going to
have to pack up and leave. Wow. Nice.
Hey, scamp sir.
Get that off of there. This hook off of
there like that. Okay. And then make
sure you're not tangled on the end.
Okay. Okay. Then you pull this down.
Keep it You got to keep a thumb to keep
it from backlashing. Okay. Now you just
let it go down all the way down. Yep.
It's going to You're going to use 3/4 of
the line.
I like those kind of Oh yeah. A little
squirrel fish.
So Michelle had seen a slow pitch jig in
videos before and she wanted to give it
a try. So while she was doing that, I
decided to drop some live baits down and
see what we could catch.
There we go. Got one. Okay. Do I need
one?
No, you're good.
Yeah. This is feeling scampy.
Not a big
one. All right.
Second drop. I'll take it.
Did yours start floating up? Yeah.
I thought it was a lot smaller than it
was.
A good size. Yeah, this rod's pretty
stout. That's a deep
size on any scamp.
Oh, now he's fighting a little
bit. Maybe it's not a scamp.
I bet it's Yep. Oh, yeah. There you go.
Very nice.
Very nice. Good job on this baby
squirrel fish, huh? Yep. What kind of
leader? 50.
Yeah. You even have the squirrel fish
back.
Yeah. All right, guys. First first scamp
today. What is that about? That's
probably 20 inches.
Let's just get a measurement on them
while we got them here
to the fork, right? No, total. Oh,
total.
19 and a half. You're pretty dang close.
All right, guys. We're going to drop
this dead cigar minnow down and see if
we can get a big grouper with it.
No, it's a little one.
Well, maybe not.
They like start floating up and then you
think it's not big and then
No, he's not that big.
Oh, it just got bigger.
All right, come on. Keep coming. That
takes a while from 400 almost 400 ft
down. The Shimano twos two-speed, you
don't have to pump and whine. You just
sit here and winch them up nice and
easy.
Oh, he's decent.
Not a monster,
but not bad. Yeah.
All right, guys. That's a nice one. Good
eating size. I was hoping for bigger,
but beggars can't be choosers. I'll take
it.
That's pretty good box already. Jeez.
See what I got put up with. I don't
blame her. The accusations and
Yep. I love the boat. Mhm. I think it's
the perfect boat for us.
Oh, Boston mackerel. Oh, yeah. You're
about to popped. Hey, we'll catch Let's
catch two right here. Two more and then
we'll go over there and drop right where
we caught the big ones cuz they're still
100 foot from where the big Okay.
So, just keep your thumb on
there. You tuck that under your
shoulder. That that side though. Yeah.
You go. Let me get by
you. That might actually be easier for
you than uh jigging.
You got a long ways to go.
That 80 lb line takes a while to get
down
there. That's what we had a
fish. You feel something on there? Mhm.
You only got like 380 ft to go.
There you go. You can kind of keep it.
There you
go. I think it was in its mouth and it
was just swimming off with
it. There you
go. Here. Hold on. Let me Now reel. Is
that
easier? There you go. I got
you. I'll put it in low gear.
Whoa. What does Michelle have?
I got color. I got a big grouper.
I don't know what. Scamp or gag? Scamp.
You need the gaff. Yeah, I need Okay,
you got it, honey. Okay. Snag. Oh, watch
out. Watch out.
I got it. Okay, there you go. It was
just I had that one hooked.
Wow. You okay? Thank you, Sean. Yep.
There you go. You're doing all right.
Hold on.
Okay.
There. Rest that rod right on your knee.
Oh, dang. Dang. Come on, Michelle. You
want to grab the gaff? Yeah. Where's it
at? It's right up
front. Don't worry. Come on, Michelle.
It's worth it.
This is a good one, man. Awesome. Yeah,
this one's back. Look, it's scoping out.
It's a big grouper.
Come on. It's in low gear, too. You got
this. I don't know.
My phone is Come on. Be Be a freaking
monster. I know when you start seeing
it.
went away. You're getting close. You're
getting real close.
Oh, yeah. He's There he is. I see him.
Look out. Oh my god. Big boy.
Oh my god. Oh, stop rolling.
Look at that.
Wow. The floor with that one.
Holy cow. Scamp dillywampus.
All right. Reel over your rod tip a
little bit. Yep. There you go. We need
to get both our pictures with that one.
I'll admit you're impressed with that
one. Oh, yeah. That's a good one. Dang.
Good job. That was Sorry, it's about to
fall.
See how long that sucker is. I bet he's
27.
20 30. Yep. 30. 31. Look at that. Here.
Nope. 30. Nice, dude.
Good job. Now that some muscle.
All right. The best way to hold them is
kept them under the belly like this.
Right here and just kind of hold them
out like that
here. Lean in towards Brock. Michelle.
Okay. There you go.
All right. Michelle's first scamp versus
the Lawless Tides. Smallest scamp ever.
I guess we'll drop here one more time.
