Welcome to the livestock market!
I'm Catherine, an American living in China with my Uyghur fiancé Asa John.
We are here in his hometown on China's farthest west frontier and today we have a very important
task to buy a sheep for our wedding banquet. And we're not doing this momentous task alone,
we've also brought some of my American friends who flew across the earth
to witness our cross-cultural wedding.
But first, we spent a couple days exploring Kashgar ancient city.
My friends got blue and white traditional hats to match the bridesmaid dresses.
Free gift. When you buy a hat, you get a mini hat.
We enjoyed some unique local music and we explored all kinds of fascinating alleyways.
More math graffiti. I've seen this in Asa John's village and they have brought it here to the
ancient town as well. Uyghur people just love to do math. Nerds.
We also spent some time in the park hanging out with China's ubiquitous dancing grandma brigades.
So we spent a couple days exploring Kashgar old town and the park and the city and now it is time
to come out to the boondocks. We are about to enter Asa John's local market and we are going to buy
the sheep for our wedding banquet. This market features the unofficial mascot of Kashgar,
the big butt sheep. But this market doesn't just have sheep. It's also got a bunch of snacks,
clothes and even a spontaneous dance zone. He's partying the ocean front.
Wow, look at that.
I like this guy a lot more. Oh yeah. He's a cutie pie. I love it. I want to dance like them. Go in.
After that lovely little distraction, it was time to get back to the task at hand.
This is the Hanarik livestock market. If you live around here
and you want to buy a sheep, this is the place to go.
Are you stuck? Are you trapped behind a wall of sheep?
Seriously, you will not find a sheep here that does not have
one of these. There are no normal sheep here. They all have butts.
Look at this one. It's a different variety of big butt. It's a big floppy tail.
See? Some of them have two clearly defined cheeks.
The reason why camels also have the humps is because that's where they gather all the fat
and that keeps it cool. Yeah. That's why they have the fat juicy booties.
Oh my gosh. Whoa. Asa John is negotiating a price. I'm trying to stay in the shadows,
because once they see me, they're like, foreigner, more money. Avert your gaze.
Tell the people, what is the perfect sheep? What kind of sheep are we looking for?
Biggest one. And no fat. So it's going to be big as in like muscle.
But if it has too much fat on it, then like the meat will be fatty, you know?
Yes.
So we've got to like touch it and find out then, because you can't see under the wool, you know?
He's actually trying to feel the meat to fat ratio.
All right, we got a winner. This is the one. So why is it that you have chosen this sheep
over all the other sheep?
I think it's good price, because this sheep from this uncle's house. So
2,300 yen. I think good price. So my choice is sheep.
Yeah. Yeah. Thank you.
So you may be wondering, what next? What do we do with this sheep that we have just purchased?
There are dedicated sheep shippers right here in the market,
and someone will ship it to his family's house and they will receive the sheep.
And now it's time to fight off the desert heat with some watermelon
and fresh churned ice cream. Unfortunately,
it's only available in milk flavor unless you bring your own flavoring.
We're making coffee ice cream because I do not like plain ice cream,
but the textured ice cream is so good. We have to get some.
Yuck cheese.
Another important task of the day, janky English shirts.
I know I already have some, but you can never have enough.
This is a winner. Hot wieners. Sophia, are you going to get the hot wieners?
Oh, yes. Sophia's getting the hot wiener shirt.
Respect tates better than attention. And that's what I always say.
It's a double trademark. Nike and Mickey Mouse. Will I get sued for wearing this?
This place feels promising. We got a gem right here.
This says me in Chinese and it says, my handsome brother, watch your girlfriend.
We got a winner.
Let's not and that we did. Of course, you can get normal clothes in here too.
And my friend just got one that's actually very similar to the shirt that I got with
Aston's aunt about a week ago with like cute little patterns on it.
It's a little figure eight donut.
Do you want it with sugar on it? Yes.
A productive afternoon at the market has come to an end.
We got good shirts, good food, good ice cream, good people watching.
And I can honestly say I've never watched anybody pick out a sheep before.
It was fun to dance with the uncles.
Stay tuned for the upcoming vlog where my parents finally arrive in China.
And after some exploring in the city of Kashgar,
we take them back to Aston's home village to meet his entire family.
And after that is the wedding vlog. Sorry to take so long to edit this.
It's a ridiculous amount of footage and I've been so busy showing my parents around China,
but I will share it with you guys as soon as I can.
See you guys next time and remember to like,
comment and subscribe so you can see more of life in China's mysterious Western frontier.
