In a 600 square feet plot, what is it you're going to do with it?
And I think this is magic for us.
I think a lot of people, by seeing this,
why not this house for us also?
We want light and we want ventilation.
So we brought light from east and from west.
So we brought this vault element.
So that's why we coined this house as Walter House.
Hi, my name is Architect Bijet and my colleague,
Architect Binkadesh, we run a firm called Ensemble.
So to download the detailed chapters, PDF and e-books,
you can go to www.buildoffair.com.
The link is in the description.
Doing a small house is a big challenge for us also.
Small houses brings a lot of challenges in terms of neighborhood,
in terms of light, in terms of ventilation and a lot of things.
So the house is located in Kangeri.
In this house, especially, we had 30 by 20, a very tiny plot.
We brought this vault element starting from the east
towards the end of the staircase.
So from the staircase, we lit the house as a skylight.
And the skylight translates to the entire house and radiates.
So now when we come and see the house, you know, you see every space
which is littered and ventilated properly.
So here there is a building.
Here there is another building.
So you have the road which is coming in the front side.
Your access is directly from the main road.
In this 600 square feet, we have built four floors.
So ground floor, we have a small studio unit and you have the parking area.
Then you have a very compact staircase
which is going to the first floor.
First floor is an open hall.
So we wanted to bring that openness and do not put any walls
so that light is blocked.
So we had an open plan.
Since we have our hostel also,
we have the southeast corner, which is the kitchen coming up here.
And we have the dining area.
So you get the light from the east side.
You get the light from the west side.
You don't have any light in this side.
No light in this side because it is abutted.
And you get the light from the top.
So your staircase is like a skylight.
Now, one of the requirements of the client was to have a beautiful altar.
We didn't have a dedicated space for altar.
So we thought like we'll bring it in the living room for many reasons.
One is so that when the visitor enters, they have a good feeling.
So we were inspired by the design of Taddo Ando, the Church of Light.
We wanted to have an interplay of arches in different angles and different levels.
The second floor moving toward, we have a beautiful master bedroom.
We enter from the staircase landing to the bedroom.
You have a nice, beautiful red tiles which runs around.
And to break these tiles, we have white patterned tiles we have kept in between.
So in your front side, this zone is basically an office space.
When we divided this bedroom and the office space,
you have the staircase in the center as an element.
And this portion of the staircase, it's a brick wall, sort of a floating staircase.
We don't have a tread.
As such, you have steel fabricated staircase.
Over that, we have put pine wood.
And from the staircase, you have a nice landing
where we have a nice decorative tiles which separates these two zones.
Third floor, we have a big bedroom.
So we wanted to use the entire back side as a bedroom.
In terms of orientation, we wanted to bring this bedroom towards the west side.
So we have followed this theme in the entire house,
the inverted arches and regular arches.
Again, the staircase separates this area from the center.
So now you have a connector
which is a beautiful patterned tiles.
And you have a vault which starts from the front.
So this wall goes enter from the front side
till the end of the staircase, an elevation feature also.
So you have the light coming from here.
And this area in the front forms a terrace.
This client can come and sit here and relax, have a cup of coffee.
So if you see, vault is formed through the brick only.
So it's a brick vaulted form.
In terms of facade treatment,
we wanted to go for brick facade where it's a brick which is projecting out.
So we wanted to bring vertical elements and
brick in between, sandwiched in different angles and different planes.
And you have this wall, which is partly a jolly walk and a glass.
So I have glass here and you have a jolly walk here.
So light goes through the jolly and it hits the staircase area.
In the entrance area, we wanted to put a gabin wall.
We wanted to bring a different type of architectural element here,
so we wanted to go for slightly eco-friendly style
like we used brick.
We used natural materials like natural stones, like water stone, pine wood.
At the same time, it should look like modern.
So we had blended modern as well as ethnic style.
As you can see, this floor, it's a beautiful patterned tile floor,
which is resembling Nathankudi tiles.
And we have wooden flooring in the bedroom.
We have rustic pine wood, which is a very beautiful, earthy, light color pine wood,
which is used for the entire staircase, even the handrails.
We used beautiful quarter stones,
which is actually a combination of natural quarter stone,
which is a glossy finish as well as a rustic finish.
We used patterns in the living room, in the kitchen, as well as the dining room.
What we envisioned has come out very true in terms of lighting,
in terms of aesthetics, in terms of any space that you see.
Even though it's a small floor, it's a premium house,
which has all the facilities of a premium house.
And we are very happy and clients are also very happy with the end result.
When beautiful people come together, we'll create beautiful things.
And to get the right architect, we'll have beautiful elements coming together.
That's what I can tell.
