The fact he was largely forgotten is a shame. Regardless of the fact they didn't make it to the poles, those men ventured further than anyone else and put up a record that took nearly 30 years to beat, and making that kind of trip with unproven, experimental, 1930's tech in a WWI era sub is just fucking terrifying.
