Let's talk about the full story behind Taylor Swift, Scooter Braun, Scott Borchetta,
and the battle to own her masters. And why it's such a big deal that she owns her work now. When
Taylor Swift was just 15 years old, she signed with Big Machine Records, who was founded by
Scott Borchetta, pictured above. And in 2019, Scooter Braun purchased Big Machine Records
from Scott Borchetta. That deal gave Scooter ownership of the masters from Taylor's first
six albums. So he now owned virtually all of the music that Taylor had put out. Taylor was
devastated. You see, she worked with Scott Borchetta for over a decade and thought that
she could trust him. But he still sold her masters to Scooter, someone who Taylor says
has bullied her for years. Taylor was upset because she was never given a fair chance to
purchase her own masters. And she found out about this deal when the news went public. Taylor felt
totally blindsided by not only Scooter Braun, but Scott Borchetta, who again, she thought she
could trust. She called both of them out on a lengthy message on Tumblr. Taylor shared a screenshot
from an image that Justin Bieber had posted. In case you don't know, Scooter Braun was Justin
Bieber's manager at the time. Justin had taken to Instagram and shared a FaceTime image with
Kanye West and Scooter Braun. In the caption, he had wrote,
Taylor Swift, what up? Completely taunting her. So Taylor re-shared this on Tumblr, writing,
This is Scooter Braun bullying me on social media when I was at my lowest point. He's about to own
all the music I've ever made. Along with the screenshot of the FaceTime call, Taylor posted
this lengthy message about Scooter and Scott and the sale of her masters. In this blog post,
which is still on Tumblr, by the way, she says, this is my worst case scenario. She admitted that
when she left her masters in Scott's hands, she had made peace that he would eventually sell her
work one day. But never in her wildest nightmares did she imagine that the purchaser would be Scooter
Braun. And just one year later in 2020, Scooter Braun sold her masters to Shamrock Holdings.
He sold them for over $300 million. Once Scooter resold Taylor's masters, she posted this message
on Twitter. Taylor revealed that she tried to negotiate with Scooter directly to purchase
back the masters, but he demanded that she sign an NDA. He was trying to silence her,
so she refused. Taylor decided to re-record her old albums, and so far she's recorded four of them,
Red, 1989, Fearless, and Speak Now. And today she revealed that she successfully purchased
back her masters from Shamrock Holdings, meaning she finally owns the rights to the music that she
created. Taylor did reveal that she has fully re-recorded Taylor Swift, her debut album,
but she likely won't re-record Reputation, which is totally fine. It's a perfect album. It doesn't
need a re-recording, but she will eventually release the vault tracks if we want them. And
yes, Swifties, I know we want them. It's been a long battle for Taylor, but good always wins.
And this fight goes way beyond Taylor. She has encouraged so many other artists to fight for
their rights to own their own music, or at least negotiate smarter contracts. She's reshaping the
way the music industry works, and this is why we say Taylor Swift is the music industry. I am
so happy for her. Congratulations, and happy streaming.
