People exercise for different reasons. Some do it to lose weight, while others do it to stay
in shape and prevent severe health conditions. But only a few actually work to improve the way
their brains work. Do you ever think of neurology when you hit the gym? I bet not, but you might
start after watching this. In this video, you will learn what exercise does to your brain,
so watch it all through to discover physical activities that can help your brain work better.
There are many good reasons why we should exercise. This includes reducing the odds
of chronic diseases, losing weight, keeping in shape, and so on. But here's one reason not so
many of you are keen on. Improving your brain function. Several studies show that exercising
has significant neurological benefits. For instance, it improves cognitive functioning,
mental health, and memory, and prevents certain neurological conditions from worsening,
and so much more. So, here are seven benefits of exercise to the brain,
along with workout ideas that can improve brain function.
Benefit number seven. Decreases anxiety. There's a good chance that you or someone you know
suffers from anxiety. In the past year, chronic anxiety disorder has affected 20% of American
adults over 18 and 30% of adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18. Anxiety can severely
impact your health. It increases your likelihood of getting other mental health illnesses,
like depression, and it can also lead to diabetes and heart problems. However,
regular exercise and other forms of physical activity can help reduce anxiety.
So, how does exercise help ease anxiety? For starters, exercise takes your mind off what
makes you anxious. Moving your body also reduces the tension in your muscles,
which makes you feel less anxious. And lastly, getting your heart rate up changes how your brain
functions, increasing the availability of important chemicals that fight anxiety.
So, how much physical activity is necessary to prevent worry and anxiety disorders?
Well, studies show that aerobic exercise is beneficial. A simple bike ride, dance class,
or even a brisk walk can be an effective treatment for persons with chronic anxiety.
These activities are also helpful for those feeling nervous and anxious about an upcoming
exam, a big presentation, or an important meeting. Benefit number six, it helps to reduce mental
stress. If you are stressed and too busy to include exercise in your daily routine, guess what? I have
some good news for you. Several studies show that almost any kind of exercise, from aerobics to yoga,
can help relieve stress. Stress is an inevitable part of life. Everyone deals with it at one point
or another. It can take many forms, such as worry, irritability, restlessness, insomnia,
anger, hostility, fear, and even panic. And these symptoms can make life very hard. In fact,
a recent survey on stress and anxiety disorders by the Anxiety and Depression Association of America
found that 7 out of 10 adults in the United States experience stress or anxiety daily,
and most say it interferes with their lives. The good news is that working out can help
reduce the effects of stress. But how does this happen? You see, exercise improves blood
circulation and your body's ability to use oxygen, and this directly affects the brain. For example,
it boosts the brain's production of endorphins, which work as natural painkillers and improve
sleep, reducing stress. Furthermore, physical activity can distract you from your worries.
This is because the repetitive motions involved in exercise help to shift your focus from your mind
to your body. Some physical activities that can act as stress relievers include biking,
brisk walking or jogging, swimming or doing water aerobics, playing tennis or racquetball,
and dancing. Though any exercise can help you stay in shape and feel less stressed,
it is important to choose an activity you enjoy rather than fear or hate. If you don't like being
in water, you should avoid swimming. If running causes you anxiety, training for a race will not
help you relax. Ensure that you try out different activities until you find some you enjoy.
When you're having fun during your workout routine, you're more likely to stick with it.
Benefit 5. Improves Processing of Emotion We live in an emotionally chaotic environment
where rants, temper tantrums, and uncontrollable outbursts are the norm
rather than the exception. As humans, we might not have complete control over what we feel.
However, by using emotion-regulating skills, we are capable of keeping our feelings in check.
What's more, you do not have to visit a holy site or spend a lot of money to learn these skills.
According to Harvard University's new research, working out can help you control your emotions
better. Additionally, maintaining a regular exercise routine helps build up resources
that strengthen your resilience against extreme emotions.
When it comes to controlling your feelings, meditation is one of the most valuable practices
you can adopt. This is because it increases your self-awareness, allowing you to better
manage negative emotions and their impact on your actions. In other words, figuring out your
emotional triggers makes it easy for you to develop a defense mechanism against them.
So, if you ever find yourself in a stressful situation, you can meditate by taking a deep
and steady breath through your nose while keeping your ribcage relaxed.
Repeating this several times will send a message to your brain to calm down and relax.
Benefit 4. Prevents Neurological Conditions from Worsening
While most people equate exercise with physical fitness, new promising research
shows that it can also positively affect the brains of people suffering from neurological
diseases. Over the years, medical experts have researched ways to stop the symptoms of neurological
diseases like Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, and stroke from getting worse. And all of this
hard work has paid off, because recently they discovered a strong link between physical exercise
and preventing or delaying these symptoms. Studies show that people with neurological
disorders who exercise have less stiffness, slow muscle loss, and even reversal of muscle wasting
in some cases. The best way to obtain these results is through regular physical activity.
Some recommended exercises or physical activities include yoga, cycling, walking outside or on a
treadmill, dancing, swimming, lifting light weights, and stretching exercises, among others.
However, it is advisable to have an evaluation and a risk screening performed by a specialized
physician before starting any physical activity program. If you enjoy this video,

Benefit 3. Exercise increases energy, focus, and attention
As I mentioned earlier, performing any kind of intense physical activity increases blood
flow to the brain. This stimulates neuronal activity and promotes cell growth, especially
in the hippocampus. This means that even 20 minutes of physical activity before studying
or performing a task can improve your concentration and enhance your ability to
retain information. Experts also agree that regular exercise can improve your performance.
This is because even a little bit of physical activity can boost your energy levels. So,
when you have to study or perform a task for long hours, take a short break and try out an activity
to get your heart racing. Furthermore, studies show that exercise stimulates the mind and boosts
creativity. So, if you run out of ideas and need inspiration, going for a walk or jog might be all
you need. Now that you know how exercise boosts brain power, why don't you get moving? If you
don't want to go outside, indoor activities like yoga, pilates, dancing, mopping the floor, walking
on a treadmill, or anything that gets your heart rate up enough to break out in a light sweat
are great alternatives. Benefit 2. Exercise improves memory
Most people forget things from time to time, like the name of a new friend or where they put their
car keys. Sometimes this can indicate that a person is too busy or preoccupied. Nevertheless,
persistent memory loss can be distressing. Many factors, such as genetics, age, and medical
conditions that affect the brain play a role in memory loss. But some risks can be managed through
a change in diet and lifestyle. Even though you cannot completely stop memory loss, there are
ways you can keep your brain from getting worse as you age. You can achieve this through regular
exercise or performing different forms of physical activity. The question is, how does exercise or
physical activity improve memory? Exercise enhances memory by increasing molecular targets such as the
brain-derived neurotrophic factor. This chemical speeds up synaptogenesis, which is the process of
making new synapses that help people learn and remember things. This makes it easier for you to
learn new things and form long-term memories. Likewise, aerobic exercise regularly increases
the growth of the hippocampus, a brain area critical for verbal memory and learning.
Some examples of such activities are cycling, running, hiking, swimming, dancing, and cross-country
skiing. Yoga, meditation, and brain-training activities like card games, chess, video games,
crosswords, sudoku, and others can help improve your memory. So, if you need some inspiration to
begin moving, just think about how priceless your memories are. And finally, benefit number one is
exercise slows down the aging process of the brain. As people get older, their brains change,
and so do their minds. Mental deterioration is common, and it is one of the things that
people fear the most about aging. But did you know that you can prevent it? Oh, yes! There
is overwhelming evidence that exercise and other physical activity can slow the brain's aging
process. In fact, a recent study by Dr. Clinton Wright of the University of Miami, as reported in
the U.S. National Library of Medicine's MedlinePlus, found that moderate exercise can give you a brain
age 10 years younger than the brains of those who don't exercise. Fascinating, right? So, if you're
wondering how this can be achieved, here's how. According to a study by the University of
California, older adults who maintain an active lifestyle have higher levels of the protein that
strengthens the connections between neurons, and this helps keep the brain healthy and the mind
sharp. Some recommended activities include reading, playing cards or board games, meditating, solving
puzzles, and hanging out with friends. Other healthy challenges include learning a new language,
playing an instrument, or reading up on a topic that interests you. As you can see, there are
many advantages to exercising the brain. Plus, creating healthy exercise habits when you are
younger makes it easier to keep them as you get older. So, do yourself a favor and begin now.
If you don't know which exercises or physical activities to perform, try some of the suggestions
in this video. But as you do, keep in mind that some might work for you, but others might not.
In any case, there is no harm in trying them out. That brings us to the end of the video.
