Cebu!
It's chunjun.
Chunjun.
Wait, what?
With the liver?
No, it's pig's brain.
Pig's brain?
Hey guys, it's Jessica here.
And our team moved to Cebu!
This is our team's first ever province shoot.
As in, we really moved.
It's a very big city in the Philippines.
Also, the very first capital of the Philippines.
Yeah, it's a very special place, guys.
And today we're going to be doing some amazing food trips.
So as you can see, here we are in Magellan's Cross,
which is one of the tourist destinations here in Cebu.
Magellan discovered Cebu is what is written on the textbooks, guys.
So we're going to try to find locals here,
but then actually, I don't think any locals would be here.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Because we're in Cebu.
It's Cebuano.
I know that already.
So guys, where should we go?
Other side?
Everyone's hiding.
But that's actually nice because it makes the main road pretty.
Oh wow, look at this market area.
So there's this like bulaglak store.
Yeah.
Wow, nice.
So nice.
The vibes.
Who's the most OG looking ate?
Wait, what?
Name?
Ah, thank you so much.
Is this City Hall?
Maybe right in front, there's a lot of locals here.
Hello.
We're from Lapu-Lapu.
Oh, why are you here?
So you're based in Cebu for all your life?
Yes.
Because I have a question.
What's the coldest food here in Cebu?
What's your favorite?
The good one?
What's that?
Marami.
My favorite is chunjun.
Chunjun?
Lechon.
Oh, that's a lechon place?
Lechon.
In Lapu-Lapu, we have unlimited lechon every Sunday.
Wait, I just like realized a real challenge.
It's hard to communicate.
Yeah, even though you're speaking in English or Tagalog,
they want to keep on speaking in Bisaya.
Yeah, I mean, obviously, they speak Cebuano here,
but then I don't know Bisaya.
Should I do Filipino or English?
Hi.
Are you from Cebu?
Yes.
Can I ask you a question?
What are you doing now?
I'm studying.
For school?
So you're students?
Yes.
What school?
Cebu Technological College.
What are the famous universities here in Cebu?
USGR, UC, CTO, ACT, CNU, San Carlos.
So your school is also one of the famous?
Is it hard?
A little.
So what is the happiest part of life in Cebu as a student?
Eating.
So sweet!
I'm going to ask my real question now.
I'm looking for the coldest food here in Cebu.
What's your favorite?
What is barak?
It's a plate.
It's a food court.
Which one in there?
Is that Cebuano?
Yeah.
What does it mean?
Because you have this rice, puso, and a pig's brain.
You're going to tuslob, which means isawsaw mo.
Then you eat it directly.
With the liver?
No, it's pig's brain.
Pig's brain?
You need to try it.
Yes.
So you just have it like that as a meal?
Just rice and then pig's brain?
Yeah.
What's that?
When I first tried the tuslobua, I also think it's weird because it's pig's brain.
But when I tasted it, it's good.
What's the name?
Tuslobua.
Is that a Cebuano word for something?
In Tagalog, it's sawsawsabula.
Because you're going to wait until it boils.
I never heard of that dish.
Okay, I'm going to try it.
You guys love the pig brain?
Yeah.
Yes.
What's the specific name of the store?
Lloyd's Tuslobua.
So there's a lot of stores?
Yes, there's a lot of stores, but you choose Lloyd's Tuslobua.
Lloyd's Tuslobua.
Okay.
Thank you so much!
Alright, guys.
So here we are at Barracks.
I guess it's the famous food hub.
Wow, look at this building.
It's so nice.
Thank you.
Are you from Cebu?
Yes.
Can I ask a question?
Yes, sure.
Oh my God.
What are you doing now?
We were eating lunch.
Are you a student?
Yes, here.
Ah, USJR!
That's one of the top six schools in Cebu.
Wow.
So how is it, the school life?
School?
It's good, but nursing is hard.
Why?
What's the hardest part?
Balancing school and then duty.
You're born and raised Cebuano?
Yes.
Where are you from in Cebu?
Guadalupe.
So I have a question.
What are you more comfortable with?
English or Filipino?
English.
It's kind of hard for us to speak Tagalog.
Maybe because we don't have interactions with the people.
Okay.
So guys, I'm going to speak in English.
Because I'm looking for the coldest food here in Cebu.
I want to know your personal favorite.
If food only, Datos Lobua.
We just heard about that.
There's a famous one here?
Yeah, here.
What is her favorite?
What's the name of the place?
Lois.
Wow, it's so cool.
So that's the most famous one in Cebu?
Aside from Lechon, I guess yes.
I'll go there.
Thank you so much!
Thank you.
Alright guys, here we are at Barracks.
We had some trouble getting the permit.
But now we're all good.
Let's go to the famous Lois.
Big brain!
Let's find Lois.
It's like a main food hub.
Oh yeah!
Guys, here we are.
Lois.
Can I just vlog the food?
How much is one?
100 pesos.
There's pork intestine.
It's free for 10 pesos.
No person limit.
So we'll get one.
Okay.
Datos Lobua.
Alright guys, here we are at Lord.
Prospero?
Datos Lobua.
First, you gotta heat this one.
Then the oil.
Okay guys, cooking class!
Next is the garlic and the onion.
Sauté, sauté.
Next is pig brain.
This one is the broth.
What kind of broth is that?
It's the broth of the pig's brain.
Soy sauce?
It's made with soy sauce.
Okay, it's done.
It's done.
Thank you.
Alright guys, here we have our Datos Lobua.
I just did my impromptu cooking class.
This is a hanging rice that pairs with this.
It's called Kusok.
Ah, there's a crack underneath.
It means hard.
Because it looks like hard.
That's why it's Kusok.
And then, I have to remove it, right?
Take it.
Just take it?
Ah, you take it out.
So you just eat it like this, like a rice ball.
It's a very different style.
Because usually, right?
When we have rice like this in Manila or something.
You would put it in a plate and scatter it apart.
And that's why we say it's good.
And when it's like this.
It's like Kaka-nin.
But really, first time ever trying such thing.
Big brain?
Seriously guys, really?
Just like this.
Honestly though, it smells like so good.
More?
Ah, it's hot.
When I first tried it, it's weird.
Because it's pig's brain.
But when I taste it, it's good.
Oh my!
You know what this tastes like?
Sisig!
As I said, it's like sisig.
It's like that nutty, you know that liver-like flavor of sisig is really there.
It tastes like the essence of sisig.
You can call this sisig sauce.
And sell it.
It doesn't taste exotic at all.
When you think of pig brain.
But then, it's just very creamy fat.
But then, it's not fatty.
It's like liver, really.
So it's creamy.
And then there's just that nutty, rich flavor coming from the pig brain.
No funky smell.
It's just like, cold.
The garlic and onion adds that spice.
So it balances it out with the creaminess of the brain.
It's my first time actually enjoying eating a brain.
It's not that spicy actually.
It's like sauce, really.
I just love the way of eating.
Where you like, dip it in a boiling hot pot right in front of you.
Because when you...
Soong soong?
It's ssao ssao.
When you ssao ssao it, it heats up the rice.
So it's like, every bite is like, fresh and hot.
So it's like a kind of, yeah, K-barbeque kind of dish.
Where you eat it impromptu while the food is still hot.
I love this eating experience.
It's still a question for me, how this is a meal.
Because there's no like, gulai.
There's no protein.
Basically just like, seasoned rice kind of vibe.
But it's a good sulit meal, I think.
I wouldn't say it's a whole meal.
But more like, merienda.
Like the way we eat kakanin.
I'm just happy to discover this type of like, dish.
I really never knew about it.
It's almost like foie gras.
It's good.
Can I ask you a question?
What do you do?
We took entrance exam at the USJR.
So you think you passed?
Hopefully, hopefully, hopefully.
So you're from Cebu?
Yes.
Because I'm looking for the coldest food here in Cebu.
That's your favorite?
That doesn't have more than 5 branches?
So it's not a franchise?
That's the name of the place?
That's your favorite?
Yes.
Because it's also cheap, and very good, and very tasty.
How many times did you go back and forth?
I think more than 5 times.
For me, it was very hot.
But the food is very good.
That's why we love to go there with me and my friends.
What about with family?
My dad hates the heat.
That's why I cannot go with them.
What's the best thing to order from there?
For me, it's the chicken.
What kind of chicken?
Fried chicken.
And the lumpia.
The lumpia is very good.
What kind of lumpia is this?
That's your favorite?
Yes.
Fried chicken and lumpia?
Yes.
How are they different from other fried chicken or lumpia?
For me, it's the crunchiness.
Because it's not the same with the other branches like Jollibee.
Really?
Yes, for me.
So even better than Jollibee?
Yes.
Really?
What about the price?
It's very cheap.
Okay.
What is it called again?
Pungko.
What is the meaning of Pungko?
Sit down.
Okay, Pungko.
I hope you pass your exam.
Alright, guys.
Here we are at Pungko.
Sit down.
And honestly, we're not sure if this is actually a specific store name
or just a whole area that exists in other places.
So let's clarify.
Can I vlog?
Wait.
What is this place?
Is this like many, many stores?
Are the owners different?
Yes.
What about the taste?
Is it different?
Yes, it's different.
We don't know which one is the one that people recommend.
So how much is this?
This is the regular price.
Just get what you want.
I'll get it and pay you later.
What if I lie?
It's up to you.
Just trust?
So what's this?
Liempo.
Fried chicken.
It's really expensive.
So the ones that are expensive.
Honestly, the visual of this entire Pungko-Pungko area,
it's like the one you can see in the movies or something.
It's cool, huh?
Starting from that Toslo Buha to this.
You don't really see this in Manila.
It's a cool eating culture.
Kuya, is this store renting?
Yes, ma'am.
When did Pungko-Pungko start?
Since 2014.
So there are a lot of Pungko-Pungko in Cebu?
Yes, a lot.
But this is the only one we know.
So how much is the chicken?
It's Rp. 17,000.
And one lumpia.
Thank you.
So guys, as we learned,
this is not a specific restaurant or a stall,
but more like a food park with their own rules.
So I think it's like a space where they give opportunity to
ibang vendors for this whole food park to work.
So I think that's really great.
I don't know if they have beer here.
No, puro mountain juice.
So it's not a pulutang place naman.
It's really a place to eat, but makasalana food.
But then, I don't know if the chicken, it's really made iba-iba,
or maybe they have one kitchen.
Because it looks exactly the same.
Let me try with the suka.
It is the crunchiness,
because it's not the same with the other brunches like Jollibee.
In terms of the flavor of the chicken,
it's like the typical kanto fried chicken we know
that we also see in the streets in Manila.
But I think the good thing about this place is the setup,
and then the price.
For that piece, it was Rp. 70,000.
But it's been a while since it was cooked.
It's not like it's hot.
It's not like it's crispy.
But then, I think it's suited.
The chicken's also fresh, actually.
Kanto fried chicken.
Bakit puro Mountain Dew, kuya?
The owner owns this place.
Makano pong lumpia?
Three seconds.
What kind of lumpia is this?
Shanghai.
It looks exactly like Shanghai, right?
It's toge pala.
It's just toge.
But then, super honest.
So bakit pala.
Because it's been a while since it was fried,
so it's like very, very, very, very early.
If I came here with the right timing
when they just freshly delivered,
that would be the perfect time.
And I feel like the locals know that rule,
but we didn't know,
so we came when it's like cold now already.
But then, sulit.
And the vibe's giving.
This is really a kind of place that I think
puro locals dalaga.
No tourists here.
Actually, in Korean markets,
it's a very common thing.
And then, I don't know if it's because the owner is
the owner of Mountain Dew,
but the Mountain Dew tastes good.
It's iba.
Oji, oji.
All right, guys.
Here we are in BGC.
Just kidding.
This is IT Park of Cebu.
Kind of like BGC area.
Let's find some more interviews.
Are you a foodie?
Is my first question.
Hello po.
Are you a foodie?
Hi.
I love this place.
It's like in between BGC and Alabang.
Are you a foodie?
Yes.
Do you know a lot of food places
here in Cebu that are delicious?
What kind of food?
Anything that's your favorite?
Anything in Cebu?
I'm speaking in Tagalog.
Lechon.
So, what's your favorite lechon?
Ayers.
Lechon.
Ayers.
My Ayers lechon there in Ayala Food Park.
Hello po.
Are you a foodie?
Yeah.
I'm looking for
That's your favorite.
For example, there's a visitor from Manila
or anywhere that you should really try to go in Cebu.
Lechon.
Lechon is so famous here in Cebu, right?
There's like so many lechon places.
There's so many.
So, I wanna know where do locals go to?
Every Sunday, people usually go to Talisay.
That's a lechon place here in Cebu.
What about around Cebu?
House of Lechon.
It's near Ayala.
That's like the super famous one, right?
How many times do you go there?
Twice a month.
Twice a month?
Twice.
You go that often?
Yes.
Really?
That's how Cebuanos love lechon.
So, what's different from House of Lechon lechon?
In House of Lechon, there's varieties.
So, it's already like a restaurant.
They also offer spicy lechon.
They also have menus like sisig, lechon.
So, what should I get if I go there?
Me, I order the original.
I also order the sisig.
What about you?
We do have the same favorite because Filipinos commonly love the same thing.
And House of Lechon, they offer their multiple spices.
So, try a little bit of each sauce there.
But for me, the best sauce for lechon is garlic, the vinegar.
If you want it spicy, you put some chili.
And then put a little bit of salt.
And that's the best sauce for lechon.
Oh, got it.
Thank you so much.
You're welcome.
Alright, guys.
House of Lechon, the famous one that a lot of people kept mentioning.
And actually, I arrived in Cebu a few days ago.
And this was also recommended by everyone, so I went.
But then, I left because there was such a long line.
But now, it's not as long.
Is it okay if I just vlog myself eating?
It's okay, but...
Here we are at the House of Lechon.
And apparently, it used to have two branches.
But now, the other one closed down.
So, there's only one branch, which is here.
And you can really tell it's a main food stop when you come to Cebu.
There are a lot of foreigners here.
Not only local tourists.
Let's give it a try.
Garlic rice.
Let's try the lechon first because lechon is the highlight.
So, this is the sauce that they serve along with lechon.
And it's plated on this lechon-shaped plate.
I love this plate.
I wanna have one.
Let's try.
With the classic sauce.
Skin, and then, like that.
The perfect one.
The rice.
That's the perfect three combo.
How many times do you go here?
Twice a month.
Twice a month, twice.
That's how Cebuanos love lechon.
Very meaty.
It's the type of lechon that's like really not makasalana.
In a way that it's very meaty.
There's no fatty part here.
It's full of meat.
Even if the serving looks small, it's all meat.
So, it's like a very ideal type of lechon that we would imagine.
Although, I would've wished if they put more skin to match the ratio with the meat.
But then, skin is supposed to be an exclusive part.
That's konti lang in a whole lechon.
So, I understand.
But then, I guess it's a pretty big place, right?
So, they probably have a lot of lechon that's readily prepared.
So, it's not like hot.
In Manila, we're used to eating lechon with mantumas.
And mantumas is usually a little bit sweet.
We would eat lechon expecting that sweet flavor coming from mantumas.
But then, this one just complements the flavor of the lechon itself.
It highlights it more.
And then, this one, guys.
So, this is the sauce that I think Ate really mentioned.
Get the garlic, vinegar, and then the chili.
When you sit down on this table, the first thing you see is just this regular suga.
Wait, that's so cool.
It's like soy sauce here.
And then, oh, that's so nice.
Only in one bottle.
Anyway, this is the regular thing they have here.
But then, you can request for this garlic suga, which is sinamak, this one.
And apparently, you only get this upon request.
The locals know.
But you eat it.
They didn't know.
Because no one has this.
Just us.
It's pretty similar.
Roasted pork flavor.
But then, this specific place, it's really less fatty.
So, I want to try it with this vinegar suga.
Sinamak.
And then, with rice.
Usually, I'm not a fan of suga, right?
But then, this one sounds so interesting.
Much, much, much, much better.
The vinegar in Cebu, it's more light.
It's not as sour.
This has to be the sauce.
The spice coming from the garlic flavor, it's really there.
Plus, the suga and the chili, it balances out the fatty flavor from lechon.
But the suga is not really strong.
So, it's not like it overpowers the lechon flavor.
It just compliments it.
It's like garlic lechon.
This is their lechon sisig.
So, when the ate mentioned about the sisig, I was like, another regular sisig place.
But then, it's called lechon sisig.
It's a sisig made out of lechon.
So, you can actually see the lechon skin.
It's got a lot of lechon skin.
More than this.
Let's try their sisig.
It smells like lechon, not sisig.
Let's see.
The flavor, it's like the sisig we know.
But then, it's different from the pig brain tasting sisig.
The proportion of the meat.
More than half of it is like skin.
And then, the ear.
So, it's very chewy.
It's so good.
The sauce.
You have to get this one.
This sauce really elevates the flavor of both of them.
You can have this ssukgal with anything else.
But then, it pairs so well with these two.
Because even if it's not as fatty, still, it's more on the fatty side.
More than fresh gulai-like flavors, right?
So, that's why it balances it out.
Perfect combination.
Why is this ayala?
Feels so chill.
A few minutes later.
Can I ask you a question?
Are you a foodie?
No, I'm not.
Are you guys foodies?
I like to eat.
Do you have a place that you can recommend?
I recommend Alpaca.
How many branches?
Ah, more than five.
Are you guys a foodie?
So full.
Are you guys a foodie?
Yeah.
Do you know a lot of food places that are delicious?
Yeah.
What do you like?
Filipino cuisine?
Any cuisine that you like.
The one that doesn't have more than five branches.
Anywhere in Cebu?
Anywhere in Metro Cebu.
Shawarma Gourmet.
That's your favorite restaurant in Cebu?
Yeah.
How many times have you been there?
Like, ten times?
More than.
What do you order from there?
What's the best?
Shawarma wrap.
There's a beef inside of it, and it's spicy.
It's like an Arabic.
There's also kind of the same, Shawarma Gourmet in Dubai.
So, that's your favorite place to go in Cebu?
Shawarma Gourmet is my go-to food.
Comfort food, actually.
Comfort food.
Okay.
All right, guys.
Here we are at our last stop, Shawarma Gourmet.
The only non-Filipino food among today.
Let's go.
Hello.
Is it okay if I just vlog myself eating Pho?
It's okay.
Thank you.
We're here inside the Shawarma Gourmet.
And it's not a really big restaurant, but they have a separate dining area next door.
And then, I'm just feeling that it's really OG, the vibes here.
So, they have a lot of different products, I think, from Middle East or where Shawarma comes from.
Shawarma is a...
Is it a Persian dish?
Turkish.
Oh, Turkish.
And then, the ate told us to get the wrap, right?
Literally, everyone's having the wrap.
But yeah, the serving time is pretty long.
It's been more than 30 minutes.
Let's see how good the food is.
Okay.
Thank you, Pho.
So, this is the Shawarma wrap.
And we've got the mixed platter.
Beef, chicken, falafel.
Looks so good.
I think this one is beef.
They literally just cooked this from scratch.
You can really feel it.
It's super hot.
Guys, I'm gonna try.
It's very mini-mini size.
Very compact.
It smells so good.
There's a beef inside of it, and it's spicy.
Shawarma Gourmet is my go-to food.
Comfort food, actually.
It's so good.
Maybe you guys should get one each.
Really?
It's so good.
It's different from the regular shawarma that we know,
from the franchise shawarma places.
The taste is really different.
I think inside, there's the beef,
and then cucumber, onions,
and their white sauce.
Tomato also.
It's so good.
Oh my god, guys.
You're gonna be shocked.
It's like 30% of the shawarma flavor we know,
and then around 30% of pizza.
Like brick oven baked pizza.
And then the other 30%,
like a very well-made sandwich kind of flavor.
But then what saves this dish, I think,
is the quality of the beef.
It's very tender.
Sometimes it's very tough,
the beef that goes inside shawarma.
And then the sauce that they put inside,
this white sauce,
I think they made it their own.
That's why it's homemade tasting.
How much is this?
Yeah, I mean, it's quite expensive
because it's not that big,
but then it's so rich.
Even if it's small,
it has a lot of flavors inside.
Try the second one.
This is the falafel one, as you can see.
Oh, look, there's fries inside.
It's authentic.
Oh, if there's fries, it's authentic?
Wow, how do you guys know so well?
It's been an issue.
The Philippine shawarma
without fries.
So it's authentic.
Oh, really?
I love it.
The fries inside, I guess,
adds that soft texture
and also the creamy texture
from the mashed potato.
It's like a perfect balance
of ingredients all together
packed in a small wrap.
And this falafel namaz,
you can tell they also made their falafel
by themselves.
It's not like frozen falafel kind of flavor.
They made it.
The flavor is just so good.
The sauce blends all the ingredients together
so well.
Last, let me try this.
The chicken one.
Oh, there's also like cheese inside.
This one is super pretty.
I thought it's going to be the same sauce
for everything, same roulade,
but just a different meat.
But then each wrap actually tastes quite different.
There's a spicy flavor in here a bit.
But the spice is not like a chili spice
but more like garlic kind of spice.
And because of the cheese,
it's more cheesy and creamy.
So they're actually all uniquely different.
That's why it took long pala.
Because everything's so different.
It's not like same, same.
And after they wrapped it,
they also pan fried it a little bit.
So that's why on the outside,
it's like baked and a bit soft.
My favorite is the beef one.
And the falafel is also really good.
But I think the beef one is really, really good.
But then,
what do you guys think about the price?
Super expensive.
Very expensive, right?
That's the only part that's like setting me back.
It's quite expensive.
But then,
this is really one of the best shawarma wraps
I've ever had in my life.
It's that good.
So yeah, I would also probably pay that much.
The quality is so good.
It's above from the typical wraps that we had.
It tastes so authentic, full, and rich.
If you're in Cebu,
maybe you guys already tried it,
but come try it.
All right, guys.
So my favorito of the day is...
Was it expected?
So for me, guys,
honestly,
the very first moment we heard about this food,
I was very like,
pig's brain?
But then,
now I cannot forget about the taste.
Like still now, I want it.
And it's the first time that I've ever
really genuinely enjoyed pig's brain, I think.
And the mura factor,
10 different buso,
and then unlimited for 200 pesos,
I think was really solid.
And not only that,
the experience of having the pot in front of you
and cooking it yourself,
and that dish was also just something that I saw
for the very first time here in Cebu.
So I thought that was very, very special
food trip experience you can have
when you're in Cebu.
But all the other places that we tried
were also decent,
but I think this one just really stood out.
So when you're in Cebu,
check this place out, guys.
And I hope you guys enjoyed
our very first Flying Out of Manila episode.
Let me know which destination
we should be heading to next.
I'll see you guys in the next video.
Bye!
