Actor and comedian Ricky Gervais has shared a brutal message to all the nominees ahead of the 97th Academy Awards.
Mr Gervais posted on X, “Good luck to all the Oscar nominees. And remember..”
“If you do win an award tonight, don’t use it as a platform to make a political speech.”
“You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg.”
The quote is from his opening monologue at the 2020 Golden Globes.
Actor and comedian Ricky Gervais has a message to all of the Oscar nominees
warning them that as much as they might want to use this chance to lecture
everyone about politics no one's interested.
He posted on X good luck to all the Oscar nominees and remember
if you do win an award tonight don't use it as a platform to make a political speech.
You're in no position to lecture the public about anything.
You know nothing about the real world.
Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg.
Now he is of course quoting himself here.
This was part of his opening monologue at the 2020 Golden Globes where he unleashed.
If you win right come up accept your little award thank your agent and your God.
So it's already three hours long.
Isn't he great and it's not the first time the comedian has taken aim at Hollywood.
You'd remember last year there were plenty of celebrities telling everyone
that they should feel scared and emotional in the lead up to the US election.
I promised myself I wouldn't get emotional but you know what?
You know what?
We should be emotional.
We should be upset.
We should be scared and outraged.
We should.
Our pain matters.
We matter.
You matter.
Your voice and your vote matters.
Yep there was plenty of that.
And Ricky Gervais mocked celebrities for this type of nonsense.
Hi guys.
Ricky G here.
Wellness and beauty influencer.
As a celebrity I know all about stuff.
Like science and politics.
So trust me when I tell you who you should vote for.
If you don't vote the right way it's like a hate crime.
It makes me sad and angry and I'll leave the country.
You don't want that.
Ricky Gervais has had plenty of criticism over the years.
He's been labelled dangerous because he tells jokes.
Here he is on The View explaining how jokes work.
That's the thing about offence isn't it?
When people say they're offended.
Just because you're offended it doesn't mean you're right.
You know?
Offence is about feelings and feelings are personal.
Some people are offended by equality.
So what?
So you can't second guess people.
If you try and please everyone you'll please no one.
With comedy as well I think you've got to deal with taboos and contentious issues.
And sometimes you deal in irony and some people don't get that.
But you know you can't legislate against stupidity.
Otherwise you'll be doing nothing.
Unfortunately no matter how many times this is explained
there are some who will never understand humour and how brilliant it can be.
So what can we expect tonight?
Will Hollywood celebrities take Ricky Gervais advice?
I certainly doubt it.
I'm sure we're going to see plenty of woke messages being pushed.
Thanks for your company.
