Well how are we all doing out there?
Now I'm going to do a comparison, a Cod comparison.
Been shopping, been to Aldi and I've been to Farm Foods.
Come and have a look what I got.
It's a large Cod comparison, Jumbo Cod, extra large Cod.
So I went to Aldi and I picked these up, specially selected, chip shop style.
Two extra large battered Cod fillets, succulent flaky fillets coated in a chip shop style batter.
Cooked from frozen, which these are.
Certified sustainable seafood.
I went to Farm Foods and I picked these up,
young's, and noticed they were new.
Chip shop, the ultimate taste of the chippy, Jumbo Cod special.
Two succulent Jumbo Atlantic Cod 100% fillets in our signature crispy bubbly batter.
So the price, different, totally different prices.
One was cheap, well when I say cheap, cheaper.
One was, I thought, was expensive from Farm Foods.
So the Aldi one was £4.69 and the Young's, obviously it's a big branded name, Young's,
isn't it?
I got that from Farm Foods and I was expecting it to be cheaper than it was.
It was £5.99.
So yeah, you might as well go a chippy.
£3 a fish.
So I thought, ooh, we're going to do a comparison on these.
We're going to see what they're like, compare them.
So let's take a closer look at the packages.
I was having a look at the front, something I noticed I picked up on straight away.
This fish here is not as white as that fish.
This looks like it's like a normal fish.
This one looks like it's been sort of whitened.
They're even more white than my fake teeth.
So we'll have a look at these Aldi ones, suitable for the air fryer.
A little traffic light system there, that's amounts per fillet.
We'll go around.
The back's just like the front, but the other way around, 460 grams.
460, more nutrition there in more detail.
Yeah, directions for use, frozen skinless and boneless cod fillets coated in batter.
That's what they are.
Do them in the oven if you want, or the air fryer.
Ingredients, Atlantic cod.
The allergens are fish, wheat in there.
So we've got fish is 60%.
Atlantic cod.
Yeah, so yeah, we've got cod.
Let's have a look at these.
Fish for life, responsibly sourced.
Yeah, seems similar to that one.
So we'll go around the back.
So we got 480 grams with a GB sticker.
So these are 20 grams more, aren't they?
20 grams more.
Let's have a look.
Yeah, we've got a GB sticker there.
What is it?
BB052, GG, that's M278.
So we're getting 20 grams more straight away with the youngs.
There's the nutrition, if you want to have a look at that.
And there's the ingredients.
We've got cod fillet, 58%.
So we had 60 in the Aldi.
We've got 58 in the youngs.
The allergens are fish and wheat.
Mustard in there as well.
We got any mustard in here?
Don't think we have, don't we?
Don't think we've got any mustard in this one.
Let's have a look.
No, we've just got milk and wheat.
Yeah.
Right, so cooking guidelines.
Do them in the oven or you can air fry them.
I'm going to air fry mine both.
Yeah, do them the same and we'll see what they're like.
So let's get these open and see what we've got.
So this isn't a shop around to see if I can get the cheapest.
It's just I picked these up in Aldi and they were cheaper than the more expensive one, youngs.
You know, it's just this is the comparison, not which is the cheapest in all the shops.
So I'm going to open the Aldi one.
We'll have a look.
That's what you get, Aldi.
Yeah, let's have a look at the youngs one.
I must admit, by looking at them both, I do prefer the batter on that one there, on the youngs.
But I mean, obviously, that's just, you know, these are all, you know, they're not real,
are they?
They're all like made up in on a computer, aren't they?
So looking at them now, the Aldi one, there's the Aldi one and there's the youngs.
Looks a bit fatter there, the Aldi one, doesn't it?
Side on view.
Yeah, a little bit, not a lot.
So better not get mixed up.
So we'll get them in the air fryer.
It should just fit in the air fryer.
So they're both going in the air fryer, exactly the same.
And we'll see how we get on.
I'm doing them for 15 minutes at 190 and we'll get the thermometer in.
We'll check them and we'll go from there.
They're done.
So the timings were a bit, I checked them after, I think it was 15 minutes.
They weren't done, I had the thermometer in.
So I put them in for about another 10 minutes.
So about, yeah, about 25 minutes they took around about 190 degrees.
So yeah, let's have a look.
So this is the youngs.
I was expecting, well, I was expecting a different kind of batter.
I was, I have done youngs in the past and the ones I did were similar to that one.
But obviously this one is, I know that's just a serving suggestion and probably Photoshop, but
not so much crispy.
So this is the Aldi one, specially selected.
Yeah, that's more like a breaded batter, that one, isn't it?
This was more like a chip shop batter in appearances.
So I'm going to chop them in half.
We'll have a look.
So what I'm going to do first, I'm going to open the Aldi one up first.
Just going to put it down there and I'll show you inside.
There's inside.
It's quite white, actually.
I was expecting the batter to be a bit thicker and I suppose it is a little bit thicker here.
Plenty of thicker years as a kid.
No, I didn't really.
I was a good boy.
There's the other half.
Yeah, it's quite thick, that batter, isn't it?
You can see there, it's quite thick.
But the fish is okay.
It's nice and white in there.
That's the Aldi one.
It's quite crisp as well.
That's quite crisp.
So we'll try the Young's.
We'll cut it at the same spot and we'll have a look in the Young's.
Yeah, it's similar, isn't it?
Similar, maybe a little bit thinner.
Just a tad.
Just a tad, but nice and white.
The fish is lovely and white.
I'll show you the other half.
Yeah, it's crisped up now, the batter.
It's nice and white.
I think the Aldi one is crisper.
I do like the look of the Young's.
Right, I'm going to try them.
So I know what you're saying.
Where's all the chips, the mushy peas, the curry sauce, the bread and butter?
Yes, I know.
We'll just try them as they are first.
That's the idea of a comparison.
You need salt and vinegar as well, don't you?
So I'm going to try.
I've even got a glass of water as well, just to sort of try in between.
So I'm going to go straight in.
With the Aldi one, that looks lovely.
I must admit, it does look lovely.
We'll see what this is like.
Oh, it's lovely.
It is lovely.
I've got a bit of crispy texture off the batter.
The fish is lovely and moist.
It's tasty.
The batter is quite thick.
Crispy.
It's all right.
I'll get a drink of water.
I've even got a new knife and fork.
I don't want cross-contamination.
So I'm going in exactly the same spot.
And that's the youngs.
That is quite white.
I'll be honest, that is quite white.
Straight away, I can taste the difference.
And it's in the batter.
The fish is lovely and moist.
But the batter, it's definitely tastier for me.
I could taste it straight away.
That's lovely, that batter.
Now, I know you're saying it's only batter.
But, you know, the fish is lovely.
I couldn't say, oh, that cod tastes better than that cod,
or that's better than that.
You know, the batter does change it.
And for me, I do like the batter on the youngs.
It's £1.30 more.
I'm going in again.
I'm going to get the tail of it.
Crispy.
Try the tail of the Aldi one.
The fishes are lovely.
But for me, I do prefer the youngs.
I do prefer the flavour of the batter.
And I do like the look of the batter better as well.
But there's nothing wrong with the Aldi one.
Nothing wrong with the Aldi one.
It's £1.30 cheaper.
The difference is, I mean, we're all different.
We all have different tastes.
It's up to you out there.
You're the one buying them with the supermarkets,
you know, that close to you that you can get to.
I do prefer me.
I prefer the taste of the youngs.
So of the taste, the youngs wins.
For price, the Aldi wins.
So yeah, thanks for watching.
And if you like this sort of thing, keep subscribing.
I've done quite a lot of comparisons.
I've got a comparison playlist.
I'll put that link to that in the description if you want to have a look at them.
I'm going to tuck into these.
So take care.
All the best.
And I'll get back to you on the next one.
