Haleyville, Alabama
to the remote village of Galena, Alaska
on the Yukon River
Good morning from the studio
Where Brian got a job offer
he couldn't refuse
KIYU in Galena
This is Community Radio
He's offered a job as a general manager
of a radio network
in the middle of Alaska
at a town called Galena
serving six Yukon River villages
The Yukon, Housliya, Galena
Kaikook, New Lotto, Ruby
Galena is in the center of the Alaskan interior
It's one of the more remote towns
in the United States
being 300 miles from the nearest road
Very remote, low-tech lifestyle
When something breaks and we have to fix it
which duct tape and zip ties
are very popular in Alaska
The town grew from a native fish camp
on the banks of the Yukon River
into an air force base during World War II
Today, the town of 500 year-round residents
is proud of its hospital, airport, three schools
and a trademark wave for anyone who passes through
You go down the road
and you better have your wave ready
Of course, it is a small community
It's sort of like Mayberry in the Arctic
But a major flood in 2013
nearly wiped Galena off the map
Yukon River flooded the whole town
99% of the buildings were flooded
The community pulled together after the flood
People are very resourceful
They figured out a way to help each other
It was either do or die
It had to happen or the community ceased to exist
The flood has affected our home search
pretty significantly
A lot of the homes we're looking at
are damaged by the flood
And what that means for us is sweat equity
Roll up our sleeves
and be willing to do some work ourselves
We're going to have to rebuild
with the rest of Galena
Until they find a house
the Landrums are living in a tiny
two-bedroom apartment above the radio station
All right, who's ready for pizza?
We've been living in the radio station apartment
for months now
We've certainly outgrown it
I am your father
There are seven people in this apartment
and we need a house
Well, hey guys, how's everything going
here in Galena so far?
Going pretty good
Today, Brian and Jamie are meeting with
John Korta, the local mayor
for advice on finding a house in Galena
What kind of place are you hoping to find?
I would like running water
Yeah, I understand that
I would like an indoor toilet
And I'd like a wood stove
You know, three bedrooms
I mean, I know you think a lot of kids
need a lot of...
But we like the girls' room and the boys' room
How about you, Brian?
What are you looking for?
Well, you know, just something to store our stuff
We know we're going to get a lot of toys
You mentioned the snow machine
Yeah
Stuff like that
So what kind of budget
are you guys working with here?
We're thinking probably between
150, 160 to 180 or something like that
With that kind of budget, I would think
you guys should be able to find something
The real estate market here
is sort of like the old west
There's not real estate agents
So a lot of times
you kind of have to be creative
Good morning, Galena
We've got five crazy kids
My wife and I just moving into the interior
And we're looking for a place to live
So if you've got a house for sale
or know somebody who has some property
give us a call here at the radio station
To find a house, we're digging under rocks
We're calling people up
We're knocking on doors
I got a call from a guy named Chris
Yeah
He heard my ad on the radio
I hear it's pretty Alaskan
So let's go ahead and take a look at it
Brian and Jamie are heading to a house
that's two miles from the river
but still within walking distance to town
Oh, look at that
Oh, I hope that's it
Oh, I love that
Hello
Chris, you must be Brian
Yeah
It's like a great place
What a beautiful place
Yeah, it's a three-bedroom house
1,700 square feet
And it's 35 years old
I built it 35 years ago
Wow
Built the house, built the baby sled
And built the babies
Now, did it have much damage from the flood?
No, I only had that much water above my floor
18 steps
Great neighborhood
Okay, well, here we are
Wow, look
Look
It's got a log stove, baby
You've been talking about it
Does your wife ever cooked on it?
Oh, yes, she does
Pot of soup or a roast
I love the logs all the way around
So you built this yourself
Yes, I did
I went up the Yukon about 90 miles up the river
and rafted these logs down
Yeah
Back then, I was a lot more frisky
Well, I see a sink
So you have running water
Yep, I've got a well here
There's a well
And a pretty big kitchen
opened up to the living area
That's basically all I need
Okay, back here is
Wow
Compact boiler and water softener
Well entrance
If there's ever a problem
It's not like we can get a technician out here
How do you get things fixed?
You get a book
You've got to fix things yourself
You've got to be your own plumber
You've got to be your electrician
You've got to be your own mechanic
Check out upstairs?
Sure, absolutely
Three bedrooms and a big bathroom
One, two, three
That's what you wanted
Boys, girls, ours
Three rooms, that's perfect
How about let's look at some of these cool outbuildings
Yeah, that woodshed there
Has seven and a half quarters of wood in there
That has all my hunting gear
There's no room in the house for any other stuff
So we've got to have these little outbuildings
Chris, what range of price are we thinking about here?
Oh, $150,000 to $200,000
You know, it's a 1,700 square foot house
That's fairly close to the range we were talking about
It's in our budget
Yeah, definitely in the budget
All right
I just decided that we're going to sell out here
Hopefully in the next eight months to a year
Eight months to a year
Yeah, well, I don't know
That apartment's getting pretty tight at the radio station
So that's a little far out there
It's a gorgeous home
It's a great house
Has a lot of things that we want
The wood stove
Yeah, I like that one too
The right amount of bedrooms
Great, I love it
What did he say the price?
It could be upwards of a couple of hundred thousand
That's way up there on our budget
Eight months
Eight months to wait
That's a long time to be in an apartment
I don't know if I can wait eight months
I just, I don't know
Eight months is a long time
You have to be pretty tough to live here
It's expensive to ship food out
It's expensive to ship yourself out
If you need to go anywhere
You have to really want to be here
Or you're not going to last
Wait
Do you think they can see us?
Brian and Jamie Landrum
and their five young children
are moving to Alaska
He's offered a job as a general manager
of a radio network in the middle of Alaska
From the studios of KIYU
and here in the middle of Alaska
scattered showers today
So we knew it would be a fun place to be
This free-spirited American family
is trading in their North Alabama farm
for the rugged and remote adventure
of Galena, Alaska
Brian and I, we love adventure
Not just for ourselves
but the sake of our children
This gives them something to tell
for the rest of their lives
What would you want your house to be?
Big or little?
Galena is located in the Alaskan interior
along the banks of the Yukon River
Yeah, I've heard that people put flyers here
Brian and Jamie are determined
to make a new life in Galena
But first, they must find a home
The real estate market in Galena
is really unusual
It's between you and the seller
And so you're kind of on your own
Nice and colorful
All right, hopefully we get a call
Making matters worse
A recent flood from the Yukon River
damaged or destroyed
90% of the homes in Galena
There's a house
I heard that house is possibly for sale
In post-flood Galena
housing has become a premium
And you can't really be picky
I talked to several people
who told me different places we could look
We'll figure something out that works
Brian and Jamie's word-of-mouth
house search is working
A new seller just called
about a smaller house for sale
on the east side of town
Well, we'll head over to that cottage
that I heard about
Hey
Whoa
This looks like it
Wow
Wow, under construction
Be an understatement, but
I like the trees
I like how they surround the whole house
Very quiet
Of course our kids aren't here yet
Oh, that's true
Jason
Hey, must be Brian
Nice to meet you, Jason
Thanks for calling us up
Let us know you had a place
Tell us a little bit about what you've done
Well, the house has been flooded
I've been pulling it apart
Getting it back together
Two bedrooms?
Two bedrooms
It has one full bath
It's about a thousand square feet
How much longer do you think
Till you get it done?
Definitely within the month
Really?
I should be done
Okay, wow, a month
That's not bad
What kind of price are you thinking about?
Well, I'm hoping to get
Somewhere around $100,000
But it's kind of hard to tell here in Alaska
We can haggle over that after a while
You mind if we go in and take a look?
Sounds great
Wow, he's done a lot of work already
I like how open it is
Look at that window
That's nice
Picture windows
Very Alaskan, I would say
Not the biggest room
But the way he's got it, as bright as it is
I think it makes it appear a little bit bigger
Which is nice
These look, they're all new
These cabinets are nice
Oh, there's the wood stove
Does it work?
Yeah, it works
You put wood in it, light the fire
But with the fire
The water actually didn't get up that high
To get into the burn box
So it only had a foot of water in here
How cold does it get here?
All the way down to negative 70s
That's one reason why you'll see in villages
A lot of smaller houses
Is because it takes a lot less energy
To heat those houses
The smaller is better
Yeah, in this case, yeah
Oh, wow
But once it gets past like negative 30
Doesn't really matter
Oh, wow
The bathroom
Yeah
Still obviously under construction
But look at this tub
Look, it's a jacuzzi tub
Right, out here in the interior of Alaska
A jacuzzi tub
Fancy for Alaska
Just two bedrooms?
Just two bedrooms
Okay, so I don't know if just two bedrooms
Is gonna be enough
So five kids, all of them in one room
How are we gonna make that work?
I don't know, bunk beds maybe
Hey, Jason, do you think we can build
Another bedroom onto this place?
Well, actually when I rebuilt the house
There was a wall in this room over here
And they were using part of this entryway
As another bedroom
So this could be an additional bedroom
Well, what do you think about it?
It's small
It is a bit small
I mean, two bedrooms
That's, you know, pushing it pretty tight
Look, it's definitely
It's not much bigger than what we have right now
That's true
You know, being smaller
It's gonna be a little bit easier to heat for energy
That's a plus
It's got that wood stove
I love the wood stove
And he said it would heat it up adequately
Those cabinets are gorgeous
That's one of the most beautiful kitchens
And the view is awesome
But we've got a lot of stuff
And I don't see any outbuildings
Yeah, a hundred thousand dollars, baby
I mean, that's well below our budget
It gives us plenty of cushion to add on
Do whatever we want to make it
Our Alaska dream home
That is true
There's something special about this place
Heavy dependence on each other
And on the natural resources around us
Strong supporters of education
And the importance of community
This looks neat
That's pretty
Look at all that wood
I guess they're stocking up for the winter, man
Yeah
The Alaskan winter is coming
And Brian and Jamie are struggling
To find a home for their family
Wow, looks like the leaves are changing colors quickly
We need to find a house fast
No kidding
If they don't find a house soon
They'll be stuck in their crap two-bedroom apartment
With seven people for eight more months
Well, there's a house up here
That John Korda, the mayor, was telling me about
Hasn't been lived in in a while
Uh-huh
Today they're meeting up with the mayor
To see a derelict house
That may be for sale in the center of Galena
Oh, my goodness
Is that it?
That looks...
He said it was set back in the trees like that
Look at these trees
Wow
It doesn't look like it's too big
Yeah
But it doesn't look too small either
So, I mean, this may be perfect
This three-to-four-bedroom one-bath house
Features 2,000 square feet of living space
And a large outbuilding to store equipment
The Alaskan dream home comes as is
With a bargain basement price
Hey, John, thanks for meeting us out here
Right on
This place is owned by a gal named Kathy
She used to live here a few years ago
She was a nurse here
And she's been looking to sell it
It has been flooded
But with a big family, this is a big house
It might be the right fit for you guys
The nice thing about this house
Is all the living area is upstairs
And the downstairs is mostly utility
It'd be the kind of place
Where you could work on it
While you were living in it
Nice
Wow
Look at this
It's a nice open space
Look at this island
You could put the whole family around this thing
You don't even need a kitchen table
You got a nice wood stove here
Which you are definitely gonna want
It's gorgeous
It's really a nice warm feel
I think you can heat the whole house with this
There is a boiler downstairs as well
It looks like there's two
Yeah, that's an old-fashioned wood cook stove
Which I think Kathy brought up here
Yeah, and you can do that old-fashioned cooking
Like your grandmother used to cook
Yeah, my grandmother cooked on the wood stove
Not something you find in every home in Galena for sure
You know how hard it is to get stuff out here
This is a centerpiece for sure
Yeah
Wow
Pretty nice, huh?
Yeah, it sure is
Cement
Golly
This is something that not every house has
Nice summer or spring nights
Summer time
You're gonna spend a lot of time out here
It's screened in
And you're gonna totally appreciate that
Because the bugs can be horrendous
Up here in Alaska in the summer time
I like this because it feels like
We're at a tree house
It is like a tree house
Wow, Abigail's gonna love this
Yeah, I think this is gonna be perfect
For the two girls
This must be the master bedroom
Not that big
No, it's kind of small
I don't know if we can fit a king size bed in here
I'm not even sure we can fit a queen
Double sink, not a bad size
One bathroom for seven people
I don't know about that, baby
So this is the downstairs
As you can see this place
Took a hit during the flood for sure
I'd say it did
Wow
Water got up to about here
They started ripping some of this stuff out
Which is a good thing
Try to get rid of some of the mold
But I think
How much mold is there?
You can smell, there's still some
You may have to reduce some of your baseboard heating
The boiler, water softener
They all got wet
Your internal water pump
Yeah
You're gonna have to probably go through
And bleach between all the studs
Probably gonna want to bleach the floor
You guys, it's definitely a fixer-upper
But I mean there's not a lot on the market right now
You don't have a lot of options
A lot of work
Are you ready for this?
There's no one out here to do the work for you
So if you want to get it done
You're gonna have to do it yourself
That's just the way we do it out here in Galena
I'm not sure I'm ready for this
When I first walked in the door upstairs
And I saw that island
And then I saw there was a small wood stove
Then I saw the big cook stove
And that porch
I was like, oh my goodness
This is our Alaska Dream Home
The size is good
That's certainly a big plus
But then I go
What about that basement?
The smell, I could smell the mold
So
I know, that's a lot of hard work, I know
And it's gonna mostly have to be you
Because I've got the kids
We got school
We, you know, I'm gonna be busy
But like John said
We might have to be willing to do that
Because most houses in Galena
Had that type of damage
So beautiful, I cannot believe
That we are living in Alaska
And as beautiful as the fall is
It's reminding us that winter is on the way
We need to talk about a house
There's the log cabin home
Now that's an Alaskan home right there
Right, and your wood stove that you like
It's a beautiful home
It's well built
You saw that utility room
It's ready to go
It's the cleanest place I've seen
Okay, it's got all those outbuildings
So you're not gonna have to add on an outbuilding
But it's not gonna be ready to sell
For about eight months
Eight months?
Could it become a year?
But it is our dream home
It may be worth the wait
That house screams Alaska
Well, one that could be available
Would be the cottage
You know, it's got those gorgeous cabinets
We like in the kitchen
You know, the plus about it being renovated
Is the fact that a lot of things are gonna be new
So there's less maintenance on some things
God, the price of that one, man
That was below our budget
But considering the size
Do we wanna go from small apartment living
To where we are now
To the same size square footage
And we already know that this size
Is not gonna work for the energy
That our kids are producing
Well, there's a sweat equity house
With the two
Not one, but two wood stoves
How about that island area?
Oh, my God
And when the weather's pretty good
The kids can go onto that awesome screen porch
Isn't that great?
You feel like you're at a tree house all the time
That house needs a lot of work
Are you gonna be able to do all that?
It's a lot to think about
But with the size, the potential it has
Could that be our dream house?
Well, knowing all that
Which house do you want?
I think the house that's right for us
The sweat equity house
Yeah, I think I agree with you
Let's do it
Hello, Cathy
It's Brian and Jamie
We'd like to make you an offer
We were thinking, you know
Considering all the sweat equity
That has to go into it
And the work to put into it
How about 120,000?
She said yes
Okay, that's great, Cathy
Well, we're officially Alaskan homeowners
We did it
Can you say boat, Claudia?
Where's the water?
Right there
Feel great about it
We're excited
The kids are excited
We're gonna forget you
Probably gonna put about
20 or 30 thousand dollars into it
Plus our time
I feel great
I mean, we're finally gonna make Alaska home
We're gonna be living Alaska
