So people always ask, what direction should my ceiling fan be turning?
Well, it depends who you ask I guess.
Some people will say, well in the summertime the ceiling fan should turn clockwise and
in the wintertime it should turn counterclockwise, and yet others will say the exact opposite.
And then some homeowners will say, well is that as I'm looking up at the ceiling fan
or if I was on the roof and looking down upon it?
So it's a little bit confusing, so let's make it easy.
In the summertime you want the air to blow down upon you, it's got somewhat of a wind
chill effect, and it's going to join with the air conditioner and help it to feel a
little cooler.
In the wintertime you want it the exact opposite.
Heat rises, so all the warm air is on top of the ceiling and you want to move that air
off of the ceiling.
So right now this fan is set for summertime.
You can see that with the angle of the blades it pushes the air down on us.
Now if the blades of the ceiling fan are completely flat it wouldn't move any air.
But they're angled.
And so as the fan pushes across the air it pushes it down.
Well in the wintertime you want to reverse the blades so that the blades pick up the
air and push it to the ceiling and back down the walls.
This is real easy to change.
There's a tiny little switch on the side of the ceiling fan, and you're not going to be
able to see it on the camera, but it's just a matter of taking your finger and moving
the switch in the opposite direction.
So now if I turn the fan back on you're going to see that it's going to reverse and the
blades are now going to pick up the air, push it to the ceiling, down the walls and
back up to the center of the room, and it's going to have a circulating effect like this.
I will say this, that in the summertime you probably want to have the fan set on high
to have all that air push down on you at a pretty high speed.
But in the wintertime I would not have it set on high.
It's going to be too much wind, it's not going to really be beneficial.
In the wintertime I would have it set on low.
You just want to move that warm air off of the ceiling and down into the living space
to keep you a little bit more comfortable.
