Moore discusses the dark comedy series, starring in an upcoming musical comedy by Jesse Eisenberg and her book "Freckleface Strawberry" being restricted in Department of Defense schools
On one of this summer's hottest series called Sirens, Oscar winner Julianne Moore plays a
high society queen who takes a young assistant under her wing and doesn't want anyone getting
in between. Take a look. You don't have any idea where he is do you? Uh no we haven't talked yet
today. I can tell him you left work though. Yeah right. I can I can leave work with you, his lover.
Simone, are you having a stroke? I just don't, I just don't know what to say. The whole thing is
just so awkward. What did you say to him anyway? It's weird that he's not texting me back. Who?
Ethan. When you were walking with him on the cliff last night. Oh he won't be bothering Simone
anymore. What does that mean? You know what it means. Please welcome back the most fabulous
Julianne Moore. Hi I haven't been on this show in forever. It's nice to see you all. Nice to see you.
Well you have been here a lot over the years. Yeah oh my goodness a lot a lot. I first started
watching the show when I was pregnant with my son. I was like there's this new show on tv when I was
just sitting on my couch and watching tv and it was The View and that was 28 years ago. Oh wow.
I love that. From the beginning. Yeah very beginning yeah. Oh look there he is. There he is.
I was nailed down too. Yeah I know. I was there and I'm still here. Yeah you're still here. I'm still here.
We're both still here. Okay Julianne so let's talk about your new series. I watched the first episode
last night. It's so good. Listen when you let go of that hawk in the beginning I'm like where is this
going? It's terrific. So it's called Sirens and it premiered last Thursday and immediately it hit
number one on Netflix. And the series is an exploration of women power and class. So tell
us a little bit more about the show and what drew you to it. Well I think initially I was drawn to
it because it's comic. It's darkly comic but but often you choose things based on what you've done
before. I've been doing something that's kind of sad and I was like along came this project. It's
so so funny and it was so um female oriented too with these three strong women in it and it was
mysterious and uh and entertaining and ultimately really you know feminist. So you'll see when you
get to the end. That role had to be delicious though watching your character is like oh. She's
a lot of fun. I mean because she is someone who is like we all are kind of a construction. You
don't really know who Kiki is and where she's come from and it's it's gradually revealed. Anyway
I loved her. I think she's great. You like doing comedy too. I do but it's dark comedy because I'm
halfway through and I have no idea where it's going and I love that about it. And you star with Megan
Fahey and Millie Alcock who are both phenomenal. They're really excellent. But they said that
working with you was a career highlight and that they were inspired by how you treated everyone on
set. The crew, folks on camera, off camera. What what does that mean to you and was there anyone in your
career that kind of taught you how they how you would want to treat people on set? First of all
that's so nice to hear and they're just exceptionally talented women. They're both really really great.
It was yeah thrilled to work with them both. I think like you know that's what I love about what we do. I
love that that we're all working together. That's the best part of it. You know it's like my expertise
is sort of narrow and deep and so is everyone else's right? So you're relying on the art
direction, on the direction itself, on the writing, on the camera work.
Everyone we're all doing it together so that's the best part of it. And in terms of like being
having role models I always say like when I first started in this business on a soap opera this
woman named Catherine Hayes who played my mother. Anybody remember Catherine? Yes I do.
And she was so kind to me and so lovely. I remember doing a scene where I was sobbing and throwing
myself into her arms and I buried my head in her chest and she just picked up my face and she turned
it towards the camera. And she was like darling. That's nice. Generous. Yeah you know she was so kind.
So you also have a movie coming out on June 6th called Echo Valley and you star in it with Sidney
Sweeney. Yes another wonderful young actor. And it's basically, the movie is about the lengths that a
mother will go to to protect her child. Talk about that. You're a mother I presume. I am.
She just showed it. I can't turn my head that much you know. Put the screen in front of me.
Well I think that we all, when you love someone I mean I think that that's,
sometimes there's nothing you wouldn't do for them right. And I think we struggle with that
idea too as parents. Like how far should you go to help your child, protect your child.
And in this case she has a daughter who's struggling with addiction and so it's a very
complicated and pertinent issue. But it's a relationship story but it's also a thriller.
Yeah. So that's an exciting thing to watch. Yeah but tough love is hard for mothers.
Oh yeah. Very hard. But you need it sometimes. Is there another freckle-faced strawberry coming?
I don't know. You know it's interesting. I wrote those books, now it's 20 years ago.
Yeah and there was recently some controversy about the book because like I said it's been
ages. I think and there are eight books in the series right. But they were under advisement at
Department of Defense schools which are schools that are attended by kids in the military. A lot
of people don't know what DOD schools are. I happen to have graduated from one because my
father was in the army. So there was this sort of moment when there are these books who were
being looked at and maybe eliminated from schools and libraries. And you know who knows because it's
about a girl with freckles and she talks about being different. So I actually think it was an
algorithm like when a book mentions like different do we want to take that out of the book? They
must have thought it was one of us. But what was kind of wonderful about it is there's all this
interest in the book again. And it's you know so a lot of copies and the fans kind of came out
and supported it. Yeah it's great. It's a great series of books. It's one of my favorites and
and for my grand granddaughters. Yeah who have freckles right. Yes they do. My daughter has
freckles. That's right. All of them. I'm the only one. I am the freckle. Just one big freckle and
one giant freckle. But with everything you have so much. You're so busy. You also just finished
filming the upcoming musical comedy written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg. Yeah. Do you sing in
this? I do. I do. We all sing and it's original music that was written by Jesse. Also lyrics by
Jesse. It's really astonishing and it's about a woman who auditions for a community theater
and they're putting on a musical and she gets a part. So it's really really fun. Checking all the
it's always good to see you because it's always a good fun conversation and you're always doing
interesting stuff. So it's we love it. Thank you. So our thanks to Julianne Moore. Sirens
is out on Netflix now. Yes if you haven't seen it do yourself a favor. Do yourself a favor.
