35 plus out the wins.
Yeah, Nico Horner told me in batting practice today it was blowing out as ferociously as
any time he can remember since he's been here and that of course since the end of 2019.
Kate Horton on the mound.
Right-hander coming off a good start and he's been good at home.
Yeah, 2-7-0 ERA, three starts here at Wrigley Field.
The walk rate is most impressive, 5.2% walk rate.
J.P. Crawford, 2-88, the on-base at 4-0-9.
On the ground, Horner takes it in and Nico will throw out Crawford one away.
Now the wind-up and the 3-2 to Julio, check swing and it's going to be up and in for ball
four and what a take right there by Julio so he draws a walk in front of hot-hitting
Cal Rowley.
Close, got it!
And a nice move!
You do not want to make outs on the bases with the wind howling out and then in particular
with the league's home run leader at the plate.
Big out for the Cubs.
And a sling and a miss and Horton faces the minimum in the first.
Take a look at Emerson Hancock who has been outstanding this year.
You take away that first start and his earned run average is a lot less than the ERA brings
into the ballgame, 4.48.
You know, if you get that sinker up, those are the balls that usually go a long way.
Hamp hits a drive into deep left center, back goes Arosa Reina, it's got a chance!
Gone!
A home run for Ian Hamp.
Cubs lead it 1-0.
That's three straight games.
He's got a sinker ball arm action but they're trying to get him to pitch up in the zone.
That adds up to getting a lot of pitches in the middle of the plate and up to hit.
That ball about mid-thigh to Ian and he deposited it in the left field bleachers.
Tucker trails that one, right field, out of its way, out of it, 2-0, Cubs on top.
Kyle Tucker with a long home run to right center and the Cubs lead 2-0.
Keep your reeds closed, partner.
Ball is a-flying at Wrigley and the two-seam fastball that Hancock is throwing is up in
the zone and just like I said, that makes for a lot of balls into the barrel of the
bat getting elevated.
That's good for the Cubs today.
So Polanco with the leadoff walk here in the top half of the second.
Randy Rosarena looking to hit home run number 100 in the spurt and here she comes swinging
a high pop-up, shallow left center field, cutting across.
Crow Armstrong as the wind grabs it, still going back and he drops the ball on the warning
track.
Polanco running second, heading for third, the long throw in the second.
Randy sneaks in ahead of the tag by Horner and the wind grabbed it.
It kept taking it farther into left center field and Crow Armstrong could not make the
catch.
Mariners have runners at second and third.
Nobody out.
And Luke Raley at the plate.
Swinging a fly ball into shallow left field.
Racing in Ian Happ going out Swanson and that's going to drop in for a base hit.
And the ball gets on by Happ behind him.
Here comes Polanco on the score.
Randy takes off for third.
A bloop RBI single by Luke Raley right in front of Happ in shallow left field.
It's going to be a wild afternoon here on the north side of Chicago.
It's now the Cubs 2, the Mariners 1.
Fasten your seatbelts everybody.
The 1-1.
On the ground to third.
Ruhan backhand coming home.
And they've got a Rosarena on that.
Ruhan sprinting out and puts the tag on it.
Possible double play ball there but he opts to get Rosarena and save the run.
Bounce toward the middle.
Love by Swanson.
Step on the bag.
Throw to first.
Double play.
Hitting over.
The Mariners get one.
And here come the Cubs one more time.
They have runners at second and third with nobody out.
And it's Nico Horner.
Horner hitting 400 with men in scoring position.
Chopped up the middle.
Crawford collects.
And Horner is out.
Run comes in to score.
3-2.
And Ruhan will take his base.
Ian Happ now a homer his first time.
First and second.
One away.
Cubs lead at 3-1.
Rodriguez back and opened up a 6-1 lead.
That's 440 feet right there.
Yeah, it's a long home run.
It's a little backdoor breaking ball.
And Ian hit it.
And I looked down at Ian and I knew it was gone.
He clicked it on the barrel.
And if you catch it on the barrel today and get it elevated to the middle, it's gone.
Here's Julio.
Julio walked his first time.
Mariners trailing 6-1 in the third.
Swung on.
Lifted.
Hit it in the center field.
But this is playable.
Coral Armstrong now backpedals.
He's back.
He's going back further.
He can't make the catch.
It's over his head.
Julio into second base.
This is unbelievable.
That's going to be a double for Julio.
A wind-aided double.
That's the second time this has happened to Coral Armstrong, one of the best defenders in the game.
So now with two outs, it's Raleigh.
Lines a one-hopper flagged out by Bush.
Pored over.
Gorgeous play.
Great play by Bush.
Took a base hit away from Cal Raleigh.
So a bloop, double, and a walk.
And again, Emerson Hancock is in a jam.
Nobody out.
The Cubs already lead by five.
Bush at base on balls and a run scored his first time.
To a two.
Drilled right.
Gets one out.
Into the basket.
Bush, he's got a dozen, and it is 9-1.
Fourth home run of the day already for the Cubs.
We're only in the third inning.
So here's Solano.
Runners on the corners.
One out.
Mariners trailing by eight.
The 2-2.
Swung on.
Line drive.
Base hit.
Right field.
Polanco will score from third.
Raleigh racing around second base.
He gets into third.
So Donovan Solano stays hot.
Drives in a run.
The Mariners take one back.
It's now 9-2.
Passes high.
Out to center field.
Carrying back.
Mark Crowe Armstrong right in front of the .368 marker.
Makes the catch on a sack fly by Cole Young.
The Mariners get their second run this inning.
Raleigh scores.
On a normal day, it probably would have been caught about 30 feet shy of the warning track.
But this day, today, it was right in the middle of the track and almost a lot of trouble.
Swing and a miss.
Struck him out.
And Horton able to get Young and then Williamson.
The Mariners could really make this one a game all of a sudden.
Two outs, two on.
And here is Rosarena.
Hit hard.
Bruhan near the chalk.
Throws a low skipper.
Bush can't handle it.
Crawford scores.
Polanco is into third.
And the inning continues.
It's a 9-4 game.
Now the Cubs leaving the door open a little bit for the Mariners here in the fifth inning.
Again, the defense has done Horton no favors today.
Hit hard into right field for a base hit.
Polanco scores.
Rosarena stays put.
Well, that ball was hit on a rope by Luke Raylor.
Ground ball.
And it works its way through.
Rosarena is in to score.
And the Mariners, one brick at a time, are coming back in this game.
It's 9-6 Chicago.
He just punched out in his first A.B.
And then he hit a double down the left field line.
And Wynn kind of blew back into fair territory.
That is ripped right field.
And the Cubs lead it 10-6 for PCA number 21.
For a young guy as great as he's playing, you know, the confidence can go up and down.
And yesterday was not a great day for him.
He's missed two fly balls in center because of the elements, the sun and the wind.
Big swing of the bat for the Cubs and Pete Crow Armstrong.
The umpires, they don't get a break because they're out there in it the whole game.
Full time.
Got to make sure to get the water and the electrolytes.
And they'll be going with a three-man crew.
So, looks like Chad Whitson on a brutally hot day is done for the day.
Veteran right-hander, Brad Keller, is on the mound facing Julio.
Nobody out two on.
Swing and a miss.
A strikeout for Keller.
And that one right through there got him.
He was hunching up something else.
Here it comes.
Got him.
Three straight strikeouts for Keller to end the inning.
What a job.
Randy aboard to lead off this inning.
He is plunked again.
The one-two.
Line.
Oh, caught.
And now a Rosarena.
And they're going to have a chance at a double play.
Dansby.
They're saying out of the baseline.
But let's just keep doing it anyway.
And Randy, a look of bewilderment on his face down there.
And what just went down.
Hit a field bar.
The new left-handed Cubs pitcher goes to work.
And a pitch hit in the air to left coming in.
Ian Happ makes a nice sprawling backhanded diving catch.
Great play by Ian Happ.
That's how you win gold gloves with plays like that.
The one-two.
Oh, that's a play.
The fans came to play today.
Some people really doing some spectacular things.
Look at this dude.
In traffic.
Two hands.
Yes.
He's signing for people.
Oh, he gave the ball away.
Love that.
Yeah, that wind is still whipping.
I mean, just looking at the ivy right now, it's just, what would you say, undulating.
Well, there are the trees.
Here's the pitch.
Swung on, popped up.
Center field, Julio ranging in a couple of steps.
Now waiting for it.
He waits for the ball to get to him.
He makes the catch.
I mean, that's one way to do it.
Just stand there and eventually the ball will just get to you in this way.
Julio without a home run the last 21 games.
He'd like to check that box right here.
Get one into that breeze.
Blown out to left.
Lines.
Walks it down and plays.
Dansby steals a hit from Rodriguez.
He's just one of the best shortstops you'll ever see.
The stretch and the three-two.
Low and inside to Hepp for ball four.
So he draws a walk and the Cubbies have a man on at first base with one out.
Coming out to take a look at Thornton.
Practically take a seat there behind the mound for a second.
It is H-O-T-1.
And now Trent needs some help off the field.
And he earns a very well-deserved round of applause from his crowd.
Cal Raleigh will lead things off.
29 home runs out of the year.
All for four in the afternoon.
Cal Raleigh a high fly ball.
Left field.
Back at the wall.
Gone Cal Raleigh.
Hit another one.
Number 30 this season.
His third consecutive 30-homer campaign.
And the most ever hit by a switch hitter before the all-star break.
Just another historic home run by Cal Raleigh.
He goes on by Mickey Mantle, Lance Berkman, and Jose Ramirez.
He is unbelievable.
He hits them out from the right side, the left side.
And I think Cal can hit a home run standing on his head right now.
Cal Raleigh a remarkable year, and it just continues.
Hopped up.
Kelly tosses the mass.
Carson has it.
Ball game.
Cubs win.
Valencia finishes it off.
And here in the heat, we all get to sing the song.
