Do you know the difference between
seelisch and seelisch,
fraglich and fragwürdig,
or vertraut and vertraulich?
The adjective pairs in this video
sound very similar,
but you should not confuse them.
I am familiar with this software.
When I am familiar with something,
then I am familiar with it.
I know it well
and master it.
Here in the example I know this software well
and can use it.
We could also say
Are you familiar with the rules
of German law?
Do you know your way around
German law?
When you say that you are familiar
with a person,
then it means that you are
very close friends with this person.
For example,
the two are very familiar with each other.
Do you know how they know each other?
So I see that
the two know each other very well
and like each other.
This information is confidential.
Vertraulich means
as much as secret.
Here I say
this information should not be
passed on to other people.
Or
I talked to my boss
in a confidential conversation
about my illness.
The conversation
only took place between me and my boss
and he promised me
that he would not talk to other people
about what we talked about.
Lazy animals make
very suspicious movements.
The adjective suspicious
describes that someone
does something very calmly.
You do not act spontaneously or nervously,
but consciously and
thoughtfully, without haste.
Often it also means
that someone does something
with caution.
Another example.
The old woman
was very careful on the street.
So she was slow
and maybe a little careful.
We usually describe
movements with this adjective,
as in the examples,
but we could also say something like
she chose her words
very carefully
not to hurt anyone.
This means that she did not answer
quickly and spontaneously,
but that she chose
her words carefully and
carefully.
She paid close attention to what she said.
In contrast, let's look at
suspicious.
Here is an example sentence.
It is suspicious that
many people today only
inform themselves in social media.
Suspicious means
as much as worrying.
Something is causing
worries.
We describe with this
adjective things that
can be potentially problematic
or risky.
Another example.
Fewer and fewer children can read
and write well. This is a
suspicious development.
We have to worry about this development.
It leads to problems
when fewer and fewer children
can read and write well.
Let's continue with
sparing and sparing.
The adjective
sparing describes a person
who wants to use little of something.
She deals with
resources, money or energy
so that nothing is wasted.
She lives very sparingly
and only spends money for the
most necessary.
So she only buys what she really
needs. Sparing
means that something is
very little available.
She gets a sparing salary.
That means
she only gets little salary.
She doesn't get much money.
Or
the applause was very sparing.
So there was only
little applause.
What could it mean if I say
your apartment is very sparingly
furnished?
In your apartment there are only few furniture.
It is a bit empty in your
apartment.

His grandmother was a kind
woman who always helped him
when he had problems.
If someone is kind
then he or she is
very friendly,
compassionate and helpful.
This person radiates warmth
and takes care of other people.
And she also forgives
quickly when someone
made a mistake.
My impression is that this adjective
came out of fashion.
At least I hardly hear it yet.
The adjective is valid
but very often.
If something is valid
then it is valid.
It is legally
recognized and effective.
I'm flying to Japan soon.
Is your passport
still valid or
has it already expired?
So can you still
use your passport?
Is it still active?
A passport is valid for adults
from the age of 24
for 10 years.
Then you have to
renew it.
Another example sentence is
You are only allowed to enter
the building with a valid
company ID.
So you need an ID
stating that you currently
work for this company.
Let's continue with
artificial and artistic.
Both adjectives have something
to do with the noun art.
Artificial means
that something was not created
by nature.
It was made by humans.
Artificial flowers are flowers
that did not grow in nature.
A human produced them
from fabric or plastic
for example.
Or
The artificial light in the office
drives me crazy.
It is way too bright.
Artificial light is the opposite
of natural sunlight.
The office in this example
probably has no windows.
That's why you only work
with artificial lamps.
With artificial light.
You can also say about
human emotions
that they are artificial.
Then they are not real
but just played.
Your laugh always sounds so artificial.
It always sounds
as if your laugh is not honest.
It just plays the laugh.
With artistic
we think about
an artist.
It means
creative.
Her artistic talent is impressive.
She has a unique way
to work with colors.
She has a creative talent.
She can paint very well.
Or
He got a prize for his
artistic performance.
He was awarded
for his work in art
with a prize.
The adjectives
questionable and questionable
both have something to do
with the noun question.
But you should not mix them up.
Questionable means
uncertain.
You say that something is not sure
or has not yet been decided.
Whether he comes to training today
is questionable.
When I talked to him,
it did not go so well.
So it is not certain
whether he comes to training.
He probably won't come.
I have doubts.
Or it is questionable
whether the company will really
fire so many people.
So the company has announced
to fire many people
but it is not certain
whether this will really happen.
And questionable.
We see this adjective
in this sentence.
It is questionable that the company
has fired so many people.
When I say that something is questionable
then I do not find it right.
Often for moral reasons.
It does not make a good impression
that the company
has fired so many people.
It is somehow suspicious.
Why did the company
do that?
It did not name a good reason for it.
Or
he wants to sell me his iPhone
for 20 Euro.
But that is
a questionable offer.
This offer
is somehow suspicious.
Probably something is wrong
with the iPhone.
Otherwise he would not sell it
for such a cheap price.
Let's look at the word pair
blessed and soulful.
The dog sleeps blissfully in my bed.
The adjective blessed
has different meanings.
Here it means very satisfied
and overjoyed.
Another example is
when he held his child
in his arm for the first time, he smiled blissfully.
So you see
here it is about the feeling
that you have when you are completely happy
and feel really good.
Blessed also has a religious meaning.
When someone
has died and is freed
from all worries
and all pain
and is in paradise
then he is
blessed.
Nowadays this is probably not
said so often in this context.
But maybe you hear
or read a sentence like
my grandpa, may God bless him,
died already in the 70s.
This expression means
that one hopes that the
deceased has found his peace
in the hereafter.
There is also
a very useful
conversational phrase with
blessed, namely
whoever believes it will be blessed.
Here is an example sentence.
The boss promised
that next year we will all get a salary increase.
Yes, yes,
whoever believes it will be blessed.
This answer means
I don't believe that.
That will not happen.
Let's look at
in contrast to blessed
the adjective
soulful. This describes
something that concerns the soul
or the psyche of the person.
For example, many diseases
not only have physical
but also mental causes.
One could also say
many diseases
not only have physical
but also mental causes.
Or
after the separation from his wife
he was mentally down.
So he was
mentally very, very bad
after the separation. He was very
sad and desperate.
