Hey guys, this is Emma. Welcome to my Chinese class. I hope you all are doing great.
As some of you guys know, I went back to China this summer and traveled quite a lot there.
I saw so many foreigners from so many different countries around the world in China. So I think
it may be a good idea to teach you guys the names of some countries so that you can ask
and introduce your nationalities. Let's get started.
Before we start learning names of different countries, I'd like to introduce two important
vocabulary words to you guys. They are country and person or people. Because we will use those
two words a lot today. In Chinese, country is guó, person where people are rén.
Now, let's learn how to say China first. China is zhōng guó, zhōng means middle,
country is guó. So China is zhōng guó. This is because in ancient times, Chinese people thought
they were in the center of the world, and the kings liked to be in the middle and thought it
was a very important spot. Of course, nowadays, China is back at the center of the news and world
affairs. So maybe it is still appropriate, right? Chinese person where people are zhōng guó rén,
zhōng guó rén, wǒ shì zhōng guó rén, I'm Chinese. America in Chinese is měi guó,
měi guó. Měi means beautiful and guó, as we already learned, means country. So America is
měi guó, beautiful country. What a great name! American where Americans are měi guó rén,
měi guó rén. England is yīng guó, yīng guó. The reason why we call England yīng guó is because
we translated the name from Chinese based on its English pronunciation. British people where
person is yīng guó rén, yīng guó rén. France is fǎ guó, fǎ guó. Like England, we just
translated the name from France to Chinese based on its English pronunciation, as we didn't have
such names in Asian China. French is fǎ guó rén, fǎ guó rén. Germany is dé guó, dé guó.
German is dé guó rén, dé guó rén. Australia is ào dà lì yà, ào dà lì yà. I guess you guys
already know how to say Australian, we're Australians now. Yes, just add rén after the
country name. So it's ào dà lì yà rén, ào dà lì yà rén. Japan is rì běn, rì běn. Japanese is rì běn rén, rì běn rén.
Korea is hǎn guó, hǎn guó. Korean is hǎn guó rén, hǎn guó rén. Now let's learn how to ask
and answer nationalities. What's your nationality in Chinese is nǐ shì nǎ guó rén, nǐ means you,
shì means am, is or are, nǎ means which, and rén means people or person. So nǐ shì nǎ guó rén
means you are what country's people or what's your nationality. As I mentioned before, you don't need
to change the sentence order when you ask questions in Chinese, you just use a statement order with a
question mark. nǐ shì nǎ guó rén basically means you are what country person or you are which
country people. nǐ shì nǎ guó rén. The answer is wǒ shì, wǒ shì. wǒ means I, shì means I'm,
If you are Chinese, you can say wǒ shì zhōng guó rén. If you are American, you can say wǒ shì měi guó rén.
Ok, that's all for today. I hope you guys found it helpful. I apologize if today's lesson didn't
cover your country yet, but I plan to share another lesson about names of all the countries
in the whole world. I hope you guys found this lesson helpful. I will see you guys soon. Zàijiàn.
