We have a lot of engines that require oil changes. Used oil is a resource on a property like this (fire starter, trailer decking preservative, etc.). My solution is a plastic 55-gallon barrel, a barrel pump, a transfer pump, some garden hose, and a 5-gallon bucket that I found on the side of the road. I have about $80 invested in the setup, and that could have been $50 total if the pump I wanted was in stock.
JK Boots Update 4/5/25: My O.T.s are still great. Heavily worn and holding up great. Still my go-to work boot. I recently got a pair of the square-toe western boots (The Buck - Indigo | Chocolate) for days where I prefer the speed of getting in and out of the boots, or days where I'm mostly on hard surfaces all day, or running errands. Very comfortable right out of the box with zero break-in for me. THUMBS UP AGAIN. https://www.jkboots.com/products/the-buck-navy-chocolate?bg_ref=BwlWA71DVt
It's
raining. So much
water. Starting to get some ditches
through here. We've got like an inch of
water in the last few minutes. It's
insane how much water has just
dropped.
Heat. Heat.

That's something that you need to change
the oil in. That's something that
requires an oil change. That's something
that requires an oil change. That's
something that requires an oil change.
That's something that requires an oil
change. And that is something that
requires an oil change. A lot of oil, I
might add. 10 gallons of hydraulic oil,
engine oil, and differential oil. That
will eventually require an oil
change. That not the dog. That will
eventually require an oil change. That
will eventually require an oil change.
That's a pressure washer. And that will
eventually require an oil change. And
that is something that requires an oil
change.

The most amount of oil that I have to
deal with is changing the hydraulic oil
on my tractor, which is 10 gallons. So,
uh, I have 12 in of ground clearance
underneath the frame of the tractor. I
cut this off at 11 in so I can still
slide it underneath. And once I made the
cut, the top edge was just too flimsy.
So I stacked the original top edge in
and zip tied it. And it's actually
pretty darn strong. So inexpensive
dedicated oil pan. So I haven't tested
it out yet, but in theory, I think this
will work quite well. Uh the 5gallon
bucket is just bungeeed in place. That
way if I move it around on a two wheel
dolly, it moves around with it. All
right. And that bucket is only there to
catch all the drip from the hose.
So I can easily get rid of the
bucket, then stick the hose into
whatever catch
can that I used. Right. The bottom I
ratchet strapped. to put a screw in the
2x4 and just ratchet strapped it all the
way around. However, the bottom of the
barrel is tapered in. So, the ratchet
strap wanted to keep falling. So, on
this side, opposite of the ratchet strap
uh buckle, I have a piece of just copper
wire, something strong that won't break
to a loop down here, keeping this off
the ground. That's all there is. That's
the only point of that, just to keep
this from sliding all the way down as
you tighten up the ratchet strap. that
keeps the bottom of that 2x4 in place
and the top of the 2x4. Uh there was
already a couple holes in here into the
lip all the way around, but I just
drilled all the way through it with a
screw right there. Yeah, that hole below
it was already there. And then this hole
right here was already there. So, just
using
those. I may or may not cut the top of
the 2x4 down. Not sure. this was
collapsing uh trying to kink as it made
this corner. So, I put this strapping on
here just to force it to be confined to
that area. And there's not enough room
for it to to collapse. If it collapses,
it'll squeeze this out. And there's not
enough room to do that. So, it's ugly,
but it's there just to stop this kink
from collapsing. This all feels like a
nice secure connection. Nice secure
connection. Nice secure connection. And
of course, power it with a drill as
needed. And then I can pump it out as
needed. So, let's go see if this
actually works.

Come on.

Heat. Heat.
I wish I would have done a better job
cleaning this out before I did this cuz
there was a bunch of dirt and crap in
this bin.
Uh but yeah, I think that worked out
pretty well. This is dedicated as a uh
oil pan, obviously, so I'm not worried
about getting it completely cleaned out.
Uh but mission accomplished. I think
this is going to really help us out
considering the just the large volume of
oil we're going to have to use with all
these machines up
here.
Of course. Can't even pump the oil out
without
uh without being brought sticks to
throw. Yeah. Go on. Let's go. Can we
throw it? Can we throw
it all day, every day?
[Applause]
[Music]
Well, add this to the list of things
that I should have done sooner. Should
have done that a while ago. the, you
know, it looks like a a goofy
contraption, right? But hey, it works.
Works quite well. I I like the little
bucket here, right? It's going to stop
all the residual drip. That's That's
going to be nice. And I don't have to I
don't have to use a funnel to pour it in
just like a smaller bucket or something
like that to actually get it to pump up.
No, there's plenty enough hose there to
get it out of the big bucket, which was
uh which was just great. Really, really
good. Um, I think I have about $80
invested in all of this, including the
pump, which is which was $47, the most
expensive thing. And I wanted to get the
one that was half the price of that. So,
it could be even less than that. Let's
just say if everything worked out
according to plan, 50 bucks. But
instead, I had to use uh spend a little
bit more on that pump. Uh, we have a lot
of a lot of engines around here that
require oil changes. So, I think I'm
going to be using this more often than
what I initially thought. And because it
is big and weird shaped, it it's going
to be one of those things that I think I
have to use several times before I
figure out where it's going to live here
on the property. Well, underneath the
lean to, I should say. And does it need
a fulltime mobile base or is it okay to
just keep using the dolly? I I don't
know, but those questions will be
answered in time.
It sure feels good. Flying high. I never
tell a secret that it's all a
lie. Oh man, that's

me. Heat. Heat.

Heat. Yeah. Heat.
