Strangest thing I've ever done to prepare for a role?
Probably scan a squirrel to prepare for scanning a squirrel.
No better way to prepare.
When do you feel like, at the end of the day,
that's a job well done?
When I've done something that scared me,
when I showed up to work scared,
and then, you know, did it.
I also love getting into bed exhausted.
Joy, David O. Russell,
what is your working relationship like
with him at this point?
It's just so great.
Spending so many years with somebody
we have such a short hand
and can understand each other so completely.
He pushes and pushes me further than I think I can go
and it's scary and invigorating.
Feels like the most important relationship in my life.
I love so many different aspects of Joy
about her finding the extraordinary and the ordinary.
And then when you do believe in yourself
and nobody else does,
what happens when you find success?
And the pain that comes with that,
the wonderful things that come with that.
And Joy has this magic that she's had since she was a child
that she just always holds on to.
And David goes so deep into characters
that it's just fascinating,
every character that's in the movie
and all of the different worlds that make her up.
Love the Lenny letter.
Oh, thank you. Love that.
How does that feel at this point
to get that kind of reaction?
I mean, it feels great.
I really didn't have any expectations
because I didn't really understand what it was.
I'm happy that it's sparking talk.
What advice would you give a 10-year-old girl?
Always be nice.
It's never not cool to just be the nice girl.
Can you tell me anything about the movie
you're writing with Amy?
I just saw Trainwreck and I emailed her
and told her to write a movie for us.
And then the next day she had an outline
and then I responded with a scene
and then it just happened.
It's been the most fun experience of my life
writing with her and her sister Kim.
Anything you want me to ask her?
Ask her if she's ever seen someone pee in a bidet.
Just ask her.
