For the Yankees it's Max Freed
and what a matchup for Freed.
He seems like he owns the raise this year.
Yeah, tremendous success earlier in the year.
He has been very good, not only against the Rays,
but as a stopper for the Yankees.
After Yankee losses has come up big this year,
he pitches well at Yankee Stadium.
Ground ball, that's gonna go through the right side
and a base hit to start this game for Yandy Diaz.
Down at the rendezvous, first baseman, he's D-H-E.
Ground ball up the middle, Volpe.
A bad flip to Chisholm and everybody's safe.
And he's hearing it from the crowd.
That's gotta be an error.
Well, yeah, I mean, he's there in plenty of time,
fields it well, he's got a decision there
to make split second to it,
try to cut down the runner there,
had plenty of time to do it, just made the bad flip.
Also had to play it first as a backup.
That's Volpe's 14th error of the year.
Two on and nobody out, and a good hitter here
in junior Caminero coming up.
High fly ball, left field, Dominguez back on the run,
on the track, makes the play.
Tagging is Diaz, he'll go to third,
and tagging, Aranda will go to second.
Second, third, and one out for Christopher Morel.
Pitch, swing, and a miss, he got him.
One after, Megan, up top of a four-seamer at 96, two down.
So now it's second and third, but two men out,
and it'll take something from Johnny DeLuca.
Right-handed batter, line drive, right center field.
That gets into the alley, base hit.
It spreads out the birds and rolls all the way to the wall.
Two-run score, Diaz and Aranda are in.
Here goes DeLuca heading for third.
He's sliding in with a two-run triple,
and the Rays have scored more in six batters
than they have ever against Max Freed career.
It's two-nothing Rays in the first.
Oh, two, swing, and a miss.
Pulled in big time with a big sweeping breaking ball.
Damage done, though, a couple of runs.
It's two-nothing Tampa Bay as we go bottom of the first.
Joe Boyle on the hill for Tampa Bay tonight,
and he's put up really good numbers
for the Rays this year, 1-0 with a 1-4-2 ERA,
but hasn't gone more than five innings at the big league level.
Rays just want him to get started on a high note
and continue pumping the strike zone.
Big 6'8 right-hander pausing and now throwing.
Lifted to the air towards shallow left.
Caminero is calling off.
Murrell, it's Junior Caminero,
the third baseman to backpedal and catch it
and end the inning for the Yanks.
That's outside, ball four.
Another base runner and a dangerous one here.
Freed can't believe he didn't get that call.
So here's newly acquired Nick Fortes,
looped to the shortstop Volpe,
and he dropped the ball on purpose
and then throws the second.
And the second base umpire, Winston, said, no, he's out.
Good try.
Trying to get Caballero off the bases if he can,
but not going to work this time.
Runner at first, everybody in scoring position.
Two down and back to the top of the order, Yandy Diaz.
Swing on, bouncing ball to Volpe.
Two hops, throws to Jazz for one,
and that's the out they needed, and that will do it.
Chisholm, Jr. leading off.
Boyle throwing one and two.
Swing and a miss, set a breaking ball down, another slider.
A steady diet of hard sliders from Boyle.
Strikes out Jazz Chisholm,
and that's the first strike out of the night, Drew Boyle.
One out double facing Dominguez,
and that's the 16th double of the season.
Dominguez now six for his last 15.
Two and two to McMahons, one out.
Boyle throws, swing and a miss, he struck him out.
Followed the splitter with the slider,
goes down and in, and McMahon fans for out number two.
Boyle on the one-two, he blows him away.
Swung on and missed at 99,
and boy, the fans are really letting Volpe hear it
lately here in the Bronx.
Been a different guy his last 10 starts
than he was the first 11.
When the Rays saw him twice and he shut him out,
Jonathan Aranda steps in, first pitch left on left.
Swung on and hit high in the air and deep to right field.
Back in the ball, Bellinger to the wall, gone!
Lefty on lefty, Jonathan Aranda sends one
into the right center field seats.
The Rays add to their lead, it is now three-nothing.
Awaiting a one-two from Freed,
here comes Max in the wind, and the pitch.
Breaking ball, swing on, and a foul tip held by Wells.
That's a strikeout, second, make that the third
of the evening for Max Freed.
Oh, two, and he tripled up, swing and a miss.
It was way out in front, strikeout for Freed
on three curveballs, that's back-to-back strikeouts.
Two outs here in the Yankees' home third,
here's Cody Bellinger, he now represents the Tigers.
intercept the corner, giving out to right field
and deep, low back, turning, looking, see ya!
A big three-run home run for Bellinger,
and the Yankees have tied the game.
How great has this guy been?
Where would this team be without Cody Bellinger?
Three balls, two strikes, still 50-50 ball strikes,
and the next pitch called strike three.
Chisholm doesn't like it, he's down on strikes,
and Boyle gets his sixth K.
So far for Max, four strikeouts, a walk,
and he gave up a line drive home run
and he's downed off the bat of a run
to the lead off the third.
Two-two for Max, swing and a miss,
and Wells holds on, another K.
Strikeout three of the last four batters now,
that's pretty good, that's five strikeouts
for Max Freed as we play here in the fourth.
Swing on and sent to right center field.
Easy play, who's gonna take it?
It's gonna be Bellinger, and right center field,
and that'll do it, nicely done by Max Freed
as he's retired the last six men that he's faced.
Jason Dominguez to lead it off in the fourth inning
for the Yankees.
And a base hit for Dominguez.
Whoa, hit him where he ain't.
Well, the infield comes in for Volpe
with a runner on third and one man out.
Three-three game.
That one is looped into center field,
it's gonna be in there for a base hit.
Scoring is Dominguez.
Volpe picks up an RBI single in the Yankees' lead,
four to three.
That's how you get those boos to cheers,
it doesn't take much.
People that come here, they're waiting to cheer.
Volpe holds it first, his pitch hit hard,
right at, off the glove of the second baseman Caballero.
Boy, nonchalant at that one,
he should have eaten that alive.
And the Yankees will take that break.
It was a low screamer about just below the knee
and he should have made that catch.
Well, that's gonna be it for Boyle.
Pitching change coming four-three New York.
First and second, one man out.
Four-three Yankees, bottom four.
Runners go.
The throw to third, it goes into left field.
Volpe will get up and he will score.
Wall stays at second and the Yankees now lead five to three.
Now Volpe gonna steal third, force the air.
Manufacturer's a run with his legs.
Pitch to Grisham coming.
Ground ball hits toward first, two hoppers snared
on the back end by Diaz.
Flips underhand to Montgomery covering.
Two outs and it's an opportunity for a two-out RBI.
Coach Smith has popped out second and struck out.
Line drive, it's a base hit to left.
Different hitter against lefties.
RBI single scoring as well.
Yankees up six-three.
Six-three lead for Max Fried now.
Maybe he's gonna stay on this role here.
He's retired the last six men that he's faced.
He struck out three of them.
Diaz strikes out on the curve ball.
It's been his best pitch tonight.
It's been this curve ball.
Two out, nobody on the pitch.
Swing and a miss, a weak wave and a sweeper down and in.
Max Fried, he's retired the last nine that he's faced.
McMahon has struck out,
fly to left against Joe Boyle.
Three-two, looked at toward left center field.
DeLuca will go to the track in front of the wall
with a leap and he makes the catch.
So DeLuca tracking that one.
Morello alongside, but DeLuca,
a long run after that one and he holds it in.
Fried going for his 12th win of the year.
It's number 93.
Foul ball held on by Wells.
Worked in on his hands.
Strikeout number eight.
Retired now 11 consecutive hitters.
There he comes.
Fastball, broken back, ground ball.
McMahon charges, gloves, throws on a run.
Right on the money, this kid's good.
Ryan McMahon making pretty much every play.
That's a dozen, 12 consecutive hitters retired by Max Fried.
Fine performance by Max Fried as he is out
for the seventh inning.
He's retired the last 12 men in this 6-3 Yankee lead.
Swing and a miss.
Low down on strikes.
Ninth strikeout for Max Fried.
Yeah, just worked him over right here
after that big, slow curve ball,
that one-line sinker down and in, diving.
Jose Caballero walking, fly to left.
Out the middle.
Chisholm, two-way.
And he walked a 14-straight retired
before he walks Fortes, and out comes Bull.
Max Fried trying to lobby.
I'm OK. I got this.
You gotta let him go. There we go.
All right. Fried said, I got him.
He always does. He said, I got this guy.
Taylor Walls is coming up.
Swing and a line drive into right center.
That's going to drop for a base hit,
and will split the gap and go all the way to the wall.
Hitting third is Fortes.
He's coming home.
Walls comes around second and will hold
with a run-scoring double.
That definitely will chase Max Fried.
You got him? Nope.
And it's a 6-4 ball game.
He's going to get a nice hand.
Well, Luizaga, this task, getting out here immediately.
Diaz, one for seven against him with the walk.
Swung on, hit the right side, and Goldsmith's right there.
One hopper.
Goldy will take it to the bag, and that'll do it.
Here's Cody Bellinger,
who has one of the biggest hits of the game to pitch.
Swung on and grounded hard to first.
Diving stop Diaz.
Pops up, flips to first to Baker.
In time, two down.
Yandi taking away a hit from Bellinger.
Boy, that was a pretty play to his forehand.
First and second, nobody out.
Now the tying runs are aboard the go-ahead run
coming to the plate.
Luizaga came in and got the final out of the seventh inning,
but now he's giving up a couple base hits,
and a little bit of trouble here.
On one hop, Volpe makes a nice play and turns it into two.
6-4-3 as Aranda moves to third.
1-1, pitch.
Swung on, popped it up.
Down the left field line.
Giving Chase McMahon.
Does it come back to him?
It does!
Yes, sir!
Two outs, nobody on here.
Bottom of the eighth.
Here's Anthony Bloomfield.
High fly ball, center field and deep.
Simpson back on the track at the wall.
See ya!
A home run into the Yankee bullpen.
His 15th of the year, and the Yankees are up by three.
That's how you turn those blues to cheers in a hurry.
And the first two men are on for the raise,
meaning they will get the potential tying run to the plate.
Tristan Gray bats.
A little number to the left side.
Down to second and out there, the run scores.
Josh Lowell crosses the plate.
That makes it 7-5.
Sure-handed McMahon, you'll see here on the transfer.
Had a little trouble getting rid of it.
A little jump pass over to Jazz Chisholm.
Good job, Jazz, staying on the bag right there.
Two down.
Raised down to their final chance.
Here is Yandy Diaz.
Grounded, Volpe.
Sets, fires, and it's dropped!
Goldschmidt dropped the throw.
And the Razor alive.
A low throw by Volpe could not come up with the scoop.
And that'll be another error.
Now Aranda, who has homered and singled.
Runners at second and third.
And a single, little old single, by Aranda,
and they might tie this one.
And a one-two.
Swing and a miss! Exhale!
Yankees win 7-5.
Wow. Well, I tell you what.
Razor's Edge, huh?
