it may be a freakier Friday but when this review went up it was Tuesday. So Freakier Friday is the
20 years later sequel to the Lindsay Lohan Jamie Lee Curtis Freaky Friday. It's been 20 years right?
No it's been 22 years. I felt that one. I was a projectionist when that movie came out and I had
built the movie 35 millimeter print style. Moving on a lot of ageist jokes in this movie and it's
kind of the fun of the Freaky Friday premise but there's another one for you. So in the previous
Freaky Friday film the remake of Freaky Friday the mother-daughter duo of Tess and Anna swap
souls swap consciousness never makes sense why but it doesn't have to for Freaky Friday it's magic.
Now there's a lesson to be learned before they can swap back and here we go. In Freakier Friday it's
more I want to say complicated but convoluted is the word. Anna played by Lindsay Lohan has a
daughter of her own at this point. Her mother played by Jamie Lee Curtis lives with them. The
wording is a little weird. Jamie Lee Curtis said ever since you decided to become a single mom and
I was like you mean got divorced? Ever since you decided she decided to get divorced right? Is
divorce problematic language? Now don't take divorce from me it's like half the jokes I know. Anyhow
ever since she got divorced or had artificial insemination the movie's not really that clear
there are three generations living in this house grandma, mother, daughter. Anna meets a guy who
has a daughter of his own now Anna and this guy are gonna get married. That guy aside they all
swap consciousness. So when it comes to Anna and her daughter in this movie it's normal Freaky
Friday premise they swap. But then Jamie Lee Curtis and the new soon-to-be stepdaughter or
step-granddaughter as she pertains to her they swap. And when the movie started out the script
just felt odd. I couldn't tell if it was a parody of the paradigm the zeitgeist the world of youth
2025 or if it was a movie directed by Gen X running off of a script written by a millennial
to make jokes they think are going to appeal to Gen Z. It does feel more like that at a point in
this movie the daughter character who's in Lindsay Lohan's character's body she makes a joke something
along the lines of uh what old person wrote these out of touch jokes. Actually thinking about it it
Someone said something like that though I'm still paraphrasing. It kind of felt like it was the
script pointing at itself I don't think it meant to be. And I gotta say all the swapping around
really is confusing. So many times in this movie I was like okay who are they supposed to be who am
I actually watching? Now convoluted premise aside I kind of understand why it happened to keep Jamie
Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan front and center. They're now the minds and souls of the young
girls in this situation the daughters the soon-to-be stepsisters. They don't want to be
stepsisters so they're trying to ruin the marriage. Could this have been avoided if grandma and mom
who look like the stepdaughters just been like look a crazy thing happened and we've all swapped
minds don't listen to anything they say. Yes but that's with any Freaky Friday movie. If good
communication existed you wouldn't have a movie at all. And it makes sense Jamie Lee Curtis has won
an oscar now. Lindsay Lohan's been clean and sober for 10 years 2024 11 years now. Props to her
this movie does show if for nothing else I'm totally cool with the Lindsay Lohan resurgence
to be honest with you. When the movie does bring the heart you remember like yeah she's talented.
The fact that she was a youth working in an industry built to sap your soul like Shang Tsung
or some ----. Anyhow she's clearly in a better place in life you love to see it. Her and Jamie
Lee Curtis play off of each other really well. It doesn't always make sense in terms of the story.
Like mentally they are these soon-to-be stepsisters and the Jamie Lee Curtis character is trying to
teach her how to flirt with someone and it's all weird and awkward. It's like well I mean
the girl didn't seem like she didn't have game. It almost feels like you're doing ---- for the
sake of doing ---- here. Which let's be honest a lot of this movie feels like that. As much as
the daughter characters have their quest romantic sabotage the other two characters are kind of just
left doing stuff because in order to have Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis front and center you
had to swap them with two other people. But that leaves two other people with what to do exactly.
Look in the end I am coming at this as a fan of Freaky Friday. The Jodie Foster Freaky Friday.
The one I watched when I was young. But the 2003 Freaky Friday did have something to it. It was
enjoyable. Freakier Friday has a new writer and new director and you do feel that. It has character
appearances and nostalgia but it all is at this point. Every sequel has nostalgia at this point.
It's the oil for the machine baby. It's what keeps it running. It does have heart by the end.
Not gonna say it doesn't. Absolutely. You have parents and kids bonding learning their lessons.
What can I say? I'm kind of a sap for that ----. But with other Freaky Friday movies out there this
offer anything in the way of hey you should totally see this movie in theater rather than
streaming one of the Freaky Friday movies. I usually say for free subtext if you own the
streaming service you don't have to pay an extra charge. That's what I mean. Try to be more careful
with my wording. I mean this movie's 20 minutes longer than the 2003 Freaky Friday. With two more
people swapping I understand why it's 20 minutes longer. That's not to say it feels justified in
20 minutes longer. But if you're a super fan of the Lindsay Lohan Freaky Friday it might be
nostalgic for you. If you're gonna check it out I'd say wait for it to come out on streaming which
is where it feels like it should have been released in the first place. All right so Freaky-er Friday
have you seen it? What did you think about it? What's your favorite version of Freaky Friday?
Or any movie where people swap spiritually physically or otherwise? Whatever it is whatever
