Bryan Robson | Manchester United 3-0 Barcelona 1984 | European Cup Winners' Cup | ROBBO

A last-minute goal by Rojo in Barcelona vastly extended the difficulty of Manchester United's task tonight. Rojo produced a stunning shot at a time when only Graham Hobbs unfortunate own goal in his first European game was the slender difference between the two sides. He pioneered in European competition back in 1956 but this is their best run since 1969 9 and Urruti off his line, Whiteside and Urruti in trouble, so close for Norman Whiteside but certainly a moment of weakness from Urruti in the Barcelona goal Whiteside is there, so too is Stapleton, Robson right on the line exactly halfway through the first half and indeed Barcelona were uncertain in the air and Moses used his body and then looked at the referee to see whether the appeals for handball by the Barcelona players had been answered in the affirmative, Maradona and Bailly had to react instantly, it's the first flash of real quality we've seen from him, Vitalia pressed by Robson Schuster finding the back pass cut off by Whiteside and Whiteside almost in, Urruti as Vitor played it back carelessly, Urruti cleared with the foot, Wilkins and Urruti in trouble, Robson and the goalkeeper, a chapter of disasters that Robson in the end profited from and on a night like this really you must ask how dare Manchester United consider selling this man and Wilkins urging Duxbury forward, real wheel of the arms, Robson who suddenly finds himself on a European hat-trick and Orbiston is onside, Whiteside, Stapleton, two goals in two minutes it's a glorious night for Manchester United and Barcelona stand and look in stunned amazement I certainly feel English football would suffer if Robson was to go to Italy, Whiteside and here is Robson it's his all-round capacity that makes him the player that he is Robson, Hughes ahead of him had to come back from an offside position and Robson isn't too concerned about where the goal is he's more concerned about the referee's watch and he's got a free kick it's a momentous night for Manchester United, they've given the most experienced club in European competition, two goals start and Brian Robson is the hero yet again and as those supporters show whatever they might feel in Italy about Brian Robson becoming their property next season there's so much desire to keep him here, 3-0 here and a net victory for Manchester born leader
