We are big sea shell fans, so every weekend we trek to a local beach here in Southwest Florida looking for beachy goodies. On this particular day we went back to one of our regular shelling beaches - Bowman's Beach - and were rewarded with not only shells, but a few beach critter sightings too. The calico box crab is a very stylish little guy, and he was quite happy letting us take video of him. We love our Florida beaches!
okay sanibel beach lovers guess where
we're headed today
if you had guests annabelle you would
have guessed correctly here we are going
over the
centerville causeway which will bring us
over to sanibel island and we're gonna
go look for
shells and critters and whatnot welcome
to another swf
beach life video if you like the beach
and you like shells and you like
critters and things like that i do
recommend you hit subscribe and
notification bell because i bring you a
new video every single week
so we're going to start off kind of like
we usually do over at bowman's beach
i know lately we've been at marco island
fort myers but i really was kind of
itching to get back to santa belle and
see what it had in store for us
so once we hit that beach it's always
nice to see that there are
shells there i'm gonna start picking
through that and see if we have any
keepers
all right here we have a bay scallop
good sign makes me know that there's
gonna be stuff in here to find
so like i said there were definitely
shells there and we're just going to
kind of hunt through for keepers
found a piece of a shark eye that's too
bad that would have been a really good
one
and here we are making our way up the
beach it's weird it feels like we should
be walking north but we're
actually walking northwest
oh pretty scallop beautiful purple color
easy to find in that wash
here we have a juvenile florida fighting
conch he's super pretty hello zigzags on
him
what do we got here
that's an apple murex
oh yay and a tulip
all right let's clean those off oh man
those are fabulous finds
very happy with that been a little slow
lately but uh
those are great let me have some
scallops and always depend on those
scallops
and we are going to talk about why it's
been a little slow in the summer
as i'm looking at these florida fighting
it's the wind it's all about the wind
the wind
in the summer actually tends to push the
shells
back out into the ocean whereas the wind
in the winter tends to push the shells
up onto the beach so
you're gonna find shelling a lot easier
you're gonna find a lot more different
specimens when you're shelling in the
winter than you are in the summer
i've always managed to find really cool
things
even though it's you know not as
plentiful as it is in the winter
but that does explain a little bit
why it's a little tougher to find things
like this
but every once in a while it is
absolutely possible to
uh to turn up some gems
here we have a little serif
this is kind of neat
another scallop i know about the colors
on those scallops
speaking of a bright orange guy
but yeah he's a little chipped and
pitted so we'll just
put him back
here we have another one another calico
scallop
kind of neat
and that too looks like another base
gallop
and another so me again based out he's a
little more beat up on the edges but
he's still pretty
oh all right i know he's a little pitted
but he's orange
you know how i feel about orange i'm
gonna keep that
oh real pretty
10 i love those hours
and another
oh i like the pattern on that guy i
found a couple like that
today so we'll see a couple more like
that
and here i know a lot of people say it
feels like i'm there so i just want to
let you enjoy a minute or second really
of
some quiet time and remind you to
subscribe
if you haven't done so already okay
now back to it we've got this cool
really
barnacled up calico clam that is
a that's a great example of a bunch of
those
um striped acorn barnacles whoa
that's like glowing beautiful orange
shell
and shark eye well oh well
the top of a shark eye
yeah we'll put him back
oh looks like i see an olive oh man look
at that color
beautiful golden olive
and that color isn't so bad either i
know it's a little stuff on it that was
pretty
looks like my husband made a deposit we
got some juvenile fighting conch
we have some augers a lightning walk
that's not colored real well and two
orange shells
those are scallops look at this guy it
looks like a heart on the bottom doesn't
it
yeah we'll call that the heart calico
scallop all right i was getting a little
grabby in the wash
and i managed to find that lightning
milk so once i cleaned that up yeah
that's a cool little guy
see that's another one of those calicos
with that sun ray
kind of pattern going on so you can see
there's a lot it was
it was it's fun shelling like this
because it's really really challenging
but it also can be quite
uh what's the word frustrating
but i managed to get that guy that was
kind of cool and this turkey wing
looks like we got another yeah pretty
colored scallop
and then a cowboy clam
up yep i knew i was going for that guy
look at that
how could i resist see another
i did really well with those today
it's all about the colors after i pick
up the serif
take a look at him definitely going back
to that pink one
yeah real pretty
found another orange guy
and got grabby and managed another
orange guy
they're easy to see some of those other
sand colored shells
not so much
look at that rough scallop oh man that
is cool
i rinsed him off and that is an awesome
example of a rough scallop
and look teeny tiny kitten paw
okay there we have a paper fig i don't
find those all the time
those delicate little guys haven't seen
one in a while so i figured
he's seen better better days but for
take a look at him anyway
again with this lightning well he's also
seen better days he's got some stuff
going on the inside but i haven't found
too many of those lately so i figured
we'd at least take a look
here we have another one here's another
lightning look not as pretty as the
previous
but still a keeper here we have some
some sandy olives
and we managed to make it all the way up
to buying pass
other people enjoying the lovely day
people picking through those shells
mostly common clams and whatnot
except for this guy
the tulip all right color's not great
but it's still a tulip and that's a
keeper
cool sarah
all right a day like today it definitely
would have been advantageous
if we had had our scooper with us but
to be fair it's not really fun like
walking all these miles with this giant
scooper so we were just kind of winging
it we just had
our hands and our wits and we were just
kind of scooping what we could
right out of that surf here we have a
calico clam
oh a shark eye
yay it's a fun little find
now i wanted to show you look at this
guys that's the silver key
signs and normally like a couple months
ago
i was way way far away from those signs
so the beach has changed a lot
i really wish that were a lion's paw but
it's not
it's just an oyster yup now we have
another one of those like sunburst
looking calico scallops
[Music]
another shark eye well
most of a shark guy yeah he's pretty
rough
we're probably gonna put him back maybe
somebody else can enjoy him
oh a calico box crab love these guys
aren't they fun
i just i like their their pattern
they're like this i don't know
cheetah print crab i think they're
really cool
they're little guys only get to about
four inches
and after our visit with him we'll pick
up this olive he's not perfect but
that's okay
what about that guy
they're juvenile fighting
i think it's hard to tell sometimes with
those little guys all right
so if you guys ever find yourself in
this kind of situation and you're
shelling like this
note that the water tends to not come
straight at you see how it's kind of
drifting to
our right so if you see a shell and you
want to kind of chase it down the beach
you're going to need to kind of keep
moving to the right so you can kind of
keep up with the shell and hopefully
eventually
grab it like this lace mirex
it's not quite as lacy as it was i'm
sure at some other point but still a
fabulous shell
this little bb olive
and i wanted to show you guys these
layers look at that
just the layers of shells just buried
oh why not i also grabbed this auger
while i'm here right
it's a big one
oh and a dolphin visit they're way out
there but
they're there there's quite a bit of
quite a few of them actually hard to see
but they're there
oh they found this guy too he was kind
of moving a little slow this is a
speckled crab
they look like a blue crab but obviously
they're not they're speckled one
is a little slow i figured maybe some
water can help them out
another really bright orange shell
bright orange scallop
not that olive but this one yes
all right and we're going to wrap this
up with this apple mirrex
that is a fantastic find great color
another great show so this was my haul
for the day
not too bad considering it was summer
and not much to be found a bunch of
real colorful calico scallops and some
rough scallops i love the orange guys
some augers a couple sarahs those murax
which is really cool
couple of lightning walks not paper fig
lots of olives
calico clams that oh the tulips how
could i forget the tulips those are
probably the uh that was probably my
favorite finds of the day
so guys thank you so much for watching i
appreciate your support
and your kind comments you guys are rock
stars
thank you thank you thank you and i will
see you again next week
