Lots of surprises on this motorcycle exploration adventure in the area surrounding Oregon's Mt. Washington. After riding our dual sport motorcycles to check out some small mountain lakes, we decided to head down some unknown trails for a true dual sport motorcycle adventure. Lots of hopping over downed trees and riding rocky technical sections ensued. Probably the biggest surprise of this off road motorcycle adventure was when we stumbled upon a massive series of black sand dunes high up in the Oregon Cascades. These dunes seemed to go on for miles and afforded us great views of Three Fingered Jack and other surrounding peaks. Many people think riding dual sport motorcycles on the sand is a bad idea because they're so heavy, but my Suzuki DRZ400S and my buddy's Yamaha WR250R did just great on the sand and we had a ton of fun ripping it up. We capped off our day of off road motorcycle exploration by finding a snowmobile shelter cabin and following new trails (including one memorable dead end) and winding our way back through some technical motorcycle trail riding to finally come out at the Santiam OHV staging area near Hoodoo.
It's gonna crash.
Nice.
Look at Scott. Oh, oh, look at the air.
Dude, I had no idea this was out here.
Does it look majestic like this?
No.
Is it open? Can we get in?
No, it doesn't look like it.
I just decided to ride over a tree. It's not a big deal.
Previously on Lost.
Theoretically, today, you should be able to hear a duck fan.
I'm trying to follow your line exactly.
That's probably not smart.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
You see what I'm talking about?
Oh, Luke crashed.
And now the conclusion.
We've made the decision, collective decision making,
to not go towards the trails, but instead go explore the woods
around the base of Mount Jefferson or Washington-ish area.
Some of there's a lot of mountains or lakes.
I can't words today.
So I have bad news and I have good news.
The bad news is in about 10 minutes from now on this ride,
my GoPro stopped working and I didn't notice for the rest of the day.
The good news is I was running my Sena 10C Evo,
so I still have footage and sound of the rest of the day,
but it's the crappier Sena camera and you can see my helmet in the shot.
However, there was enough cool stuff happening this day
that I think it's still worth trying to put together a video for you.
So you'll notice when it switches from one camera to the other.
I apologize, but know that I've rectified the situation since
and it shouldn't happen again.
Okay, I was pushing some sand there.
There's a lot more water in this than last time I was down here.
I feel like this tree was not here before.
I just like this lake.
I figured since we're coming by,
but that's the road that goes to the snowmobile shelter.
This is just a neat spot.
I would have camped here.
It'd be rad.
Not a lot of shade.
What was that beeping?
Probably my GoPro decided it doesn't want to work anymore.
There's a sign.
There'll be a red sign that says snowmobile shelter.
Just look for it.
Evil.
Does it say evil?
The fruits of the devil.
I'm going around.
Hell yeah.
Did you go over?
Nailed it.
Awesome.
I did not see how many figures that dude held up.
I think like five.
I'm probably going to go over this tree because I f**ked myself.
It's going to crash.
Nice.
That was not smooth.
But should have just stood up and gone faster.
It's almost always the answer.
Nice.
My favorite part so far.
Luke's just jumping it.
Look at Scott.
Oh, oh, look at the air.
Hell yeah.
Hopefully I got that on camera.
This is interesting trail riding.
And this is not on the map.
It's important to point out we are not in the OHV area.
These are just roads through the woods.
That might explain the...
They seem relatively beat up.
Yeah.
There's no one out here maintaining this.
Weird place for that log.
Oh, water crossing into a hill.
Oh, okay.
Oops.
I handled that about as badly as you can.
Technical.
How steep is it?
I don't know.
But if he's going to dump it, I don't want to be right on his ass.
Is it steep and technical?
Because that's my favorite.
I watched a video and it said the trick is pull the clutch in
and go as slow as you can for as long as you can.
Clutch in?
Yeah.
Is that crazy?
I've seen that in multiple videos.
Like, compression braking is apparently not that helpful.
Who knew?
You good?
Yep.
Oh yeah, that's my jam.
What is this?
There's a sand pit out here?
Huh.
This is new.
How sandy is it?
Very.
These bikes are not great in the sand.
I don't even have enough of a run here.
This is probably bad.
Oh, it's not too bad.
Not too bad.
Maybe it's that way.
Not too bad.
This I did not know was here.
It's very wet, which is helping us right now.
So I had no idea this black sandy area was here.
This is fun.
Well, as long as it doesn't get a ton deeper, it's at least doable.
Unless Scott cuts across my path.
Oh my god, it is massive.
Holy crap.
Dude, I had no idea this ---- was out here.
No.
Crazy.
This is fun.
Three-finger jack looks amazing.
Cool.
Oh, who says dual sports can't ride in the sand?
Huh?
It can be done.
I don't know if anybody says that, but if they do, they're wrong.
I mean, they're pretty heavy.
I might go up there and look at the view like Scott is doing.
Wow, there's way more even.
Unbelievable.
Beautiful.
I had no idea this was out here.
Dude, take a selfie with me.
Some deer tracks.
Lots of deer tracks.
This sand is so wet, you can read the word trackmaster in my track.
Seriously?
Yeah, I just took a picture.
I want to see you get it up to a little bit of speed
and then grab a fistful of front brake and throttle at the same time.
Let's see what happens.
Front brake and throttle.
Yeah, I think you'll do a wicked power slide.
You should definitely make motorcycle advice videos.
You just have the best ideas, you know?
Majestic like this?
No.
Dual sport sand, friends.
Here it is.
DRZ on the dunes with trackmasters, not a paddle tire.
Dirty dunes.
It can be done.
And wordsy dunes.
These things will go anywhere.
WR250R behind me with a tractionator on the rear.
You still got the Pirelli on the front?
Where the hell is this?
Yeah.
We didn't come in this way.
I think I want what this says.
Island Shelter.
South Loop Trail.
That sign next to it seemed like where I could turn here and we can't.
Okay.
Island Junction Shelter Point 1.
We're turning left.
There it is.
Look at the **** I can find by accident.
Oh, it's pretty up here.
Okay.
Cool.
Really not bad, huh?
Is it open?
Can we get in?
No, it doesn't look like it.
Okay.
South Loop Ski Trail, Ray Benson Snow Park, three miles.
All right.
Well, back towards the snow park is where we want to go.
Oh, that was technical.
Are you supposed to do the high pitch?
Technical.
Are you doing the borderland thing?
Yeah.
Oh, go left.
Go left.
That was not where I wanted to be braking.
I was not headed in the right direction though.
I'm going over this whether I want to or not.
Technical.
I'm just saying this for the footage now because everyone makes such a joke out of it.
Can't see.
Wrong line, dude.
Holy ****
Technical.
I hope we don't have to come back down this.
Well, I'll be able to actually see, so.
This is why.
Yeah, man.
I love this.
I like this.
You should not let me lead.
You're the navigator.
Yeah, poorly.
Poorly navigating all the time.
But I mean, this is some technical ****
Big log.
Just kidding.
It's not big.
Good place to practice my slow speed clutching standing up for sure.
I think this is the trail.
It's so hard to even see.
It just split on us.
I don't think this is it.
I mean, I can stop and look at the map, but why?
That's the fun.
Doesn't seem that fun.
This does not feel like trail all of a sudden.
No, it's split.
The trail, I think, goes the other way.
You guys are turning around, right?
Bye, dude.
All right, let's roll.
Oh, that was almost bad.
Uh, you were right in front of me.
Cool you to run me over?
Maybe.
I don't know.
OK, go that way.
There it is.
You good?
Yep.
Oh, I should have got footage of you guys going over that.
I found the trail.
I just decided to ride over a tree.
It's not a big deal.
There was, uh, I don't know if you noticed a foot to the right from where you crossed.
The ground drops away.
Yeah, I noticed.
I was trying not to **** my pants.
I'm going to go back and show them where the alternate path is.
I got him stuck in the tree.
Dude, just go that way.
Just go that way.
This is not the trail.
I was committed, but that's this is not the trail.
It's over there.
He's good.
They're going to come back this way.
Sorry, I was yelling in your ear.
I kind of want to ride over that tree again.
There's a guy behind you.
You want to go that way?
Go that way.
Yeah.
Yeah, that's your trail.
Go that way.
That way.
Go that way.
Everybody's going to you guys.
It is really hard to see where the trail goes.
Like, really hard.
Go that way.
It's that way.
How many riders are coming?
A lot.
They were all trying to go around.
See, it's not my fault.
Like, everyone looks at it and thinks this is the trail.
It's not the trail.
That's definitely it's definitely not the move.
This does not look like the trail.
It was an easy mistake to make.
You got over that tree, though.
That's cool.
Yeah.
Yeah, you're badass.
Blind.
I'm seriously all I can see is your brake light right now.
There we go.
Oh, whoa.
That's interesting.
There's a power box, so we can't be that far from civilization.
All these fun parts right into the sun.
Yeah, it's a bad time of day.
I think this is our this is our road.
This is our road.
Okay.
Maybe right will take us back out to the road.
Left will take us back down to the trail we want.
Because south.
Yeah.
So if we go south, which is that way, because Mount Washington is over there.
It will take us to the trail we need to cut over to our staging area.
I think this is that road.
Okay, this is our road.
Where's our trail?
Here's our trail.
You want to lead this part?
No, not really.
Okay.
Pretty sure this is it.
I made it.
Definitely wheelied a little bit right there.
Awesome, dude.
And those dudes laughed at me.
Laughed with joy and admiration.
Excellent!
You.
