That’s the bold claim ULA makes about its latest rocket, the Vulcan Centaur, a vehicle known more for its delays than its technical achievements. If Vulcan truly is the powerhouse ULA says it is, should Starship, New Glenn, Neutron, Nova, and even Falcon 9 be worried in the conference room?
Naturally, many people saw the statement as a joke, a flashy marketing push to promote ULA’s new product, or simply a dramatic hook for its podcast, The Burn Sequence.
But let’s flip the perspective, could there be substance behind ULA’s pride in its next-generation rocket? Or is it just hype?

Among those questioning ULA’s claims, an X user named Robin responded with images of SpaceX’s Starship launch captioned: “Let’s just agree to disagree.” The post was a subtle jab at ULA’s branding of Vulcan as “America’s most advanced launch system,” highlighting Starship’s reusable design and its booster stage separation.
Elon Musk seemed to agree, dropping a laughing emoji in reply. As we know, SpaceX has spent over a decade perfecting rocket reusability, while ULA is only beginning to step into this field. The journey began with Falcon 9’s first successful booster reflight in March 2017. Since then, Falcon family boosters have landed nearly 500 times. To date, 48 boosters have flown multiple missions, with the record-holder, booster B1067, completing 29 flights.

After nailing the fundamentals of reusability, SpaceX pushed further with bigger challenges. Most recently, they managed to convert a Falcon Heavy center core for a Falcon 9 mission and landed it successfully just eight minutes after liftoff. This marked the first-ever recovery of a Falcon Heavy center core, a major milestone in reusability. Why is this significant? Unlike Falcon 9 boosters or Falcon Heavy’s side boosters, the center core is built differently, with thicker tanks, extra structural supports, and reinforced attachment points. That makes it stronger, but also 10–20% heavier, demanding more fuel and making recovery far more difficult.
