What's up, Karate Nerds?
It's me, Jesse, from karatebyjesse.com.
And today, I'm standing here with the one and only
Sensei Anthony Venezio, the world's leading expert
when it comes to combining MMA with karate.
He's the trainer of many famous karate fighters
like Lyoto Machida, Vitor Belfort, and the list goes on.
Today, he's here to show you guys how to use
some of the MMA knowledge against a cage
to defend yourself if you are a karate fighter.
Because usually, we don't train against a cage or a wall,
but this is something they do a lot in MMA.
Check it out.
Thank you very much, Sensei Venezio, for being here.
So, what do you think is the most important thing
if you want to defend yourself against a cage
as a karate practitioner?
Yeah, I think it's very important for karate guys
to develop the Ura Waza technique,
that means a short distance technique.
Okay.
So, Kagi Zuki, we use Kagi Zuki in Shodan,
Yeah, exactly.
or Baki Nidan, whatever.
Empi,
Knees.
Knees, all the time.
Ura Waza, we don't use.
Right, yeah.
It's very important to learn how to use.
Okay.
And you have to think exactly like in Kata.
Right.
You have to move instantly to get a precise
and speed punch or speed elbow
when you go to the fence, okay?
So, when you're against the fence,
you should think like Kata.
Yeah.
Okay.
You can use, sometimes, you can use like Heian Nidan
or Karate Shotokan,
or Pinyan Nidan.
You can use the elbow to, right?
Yeah.
You can use here.
Yeah.
When you're on the fence, you just stop me.
So, to defend you.
Yeah, okay, okay, yeah, we switch.
That way, you use that way.
Boom!
Yeah, exactly.
All the time.
To create some space there, yeah.
Create space, and then you move your hips.
Okay, wow.
Okay, and you, in the opposite position, too.
If you go to the, your opponent go to the fence,
and defend himself like a foot guard,
you just, boom, Heian Nidan.
Yeah, exactly.
Boom, you pass through the guard.
Using straight, using the elbow.
After this, you use once, twice, and three times.
Yeah, yeah.
You keep going.
You combine, you keep combining.
So, how can we use the Kagi Tsuki?
Kagi Tsuki.
Yeah.
When you try to hold here, you just,
if you try to do a regular round punch, you can do this.
So, you use your shoulder and your hip,
and then you punch right here.
A short punch, but you can.
Yeah.
Yeah, I don't know.
Okay, let's do a time out.
Okay, we're back.
They were doing some construction work,
and I wanted to make sure that you guys hear this,
so now let's continue.
Okay, we were talking about how to use the hook punch,
the Kagi Tsuki.
Kagi Tsuki.
So, if you're against the cage,
you are a karate practitioner, how can you use this?
In most of the time, the guys try to hold your biceps,
and you can do a regular punch.
But if you use your hips and your elbow,
you can just turn your body and use your shoulder
like if you're gonna hit with the shoulder.
Ah, right.
Move your shoulder and up your fist, use the Kagi Tsuki.
Right, yeah, exactly.
Hip and Kagi Tsuki.
Ah, okay.
Control my biceps, my biceps,
I just turn my shoulder and punch.
Turn and punch.
Punch and elbow.
Yeah, and get out, okay?
So, is there any specific takedown technique
that is good to know against the cage
if you wanna escape from there?
Takedown technique?
Yeah.
I...
Or how can you defend against a takedown?
If somebody tries to take you down.
Yeah, I like too much to use the movement
that we find in a Saidai.
Okay.
The underhook.
Ah, okay.
First, when the guy try to catch me,
I just try to put him to up.
Okay.
And then the guy falling down to try to catch my leg,
and then I falling down with him.
Ah, okay.
And use my shoulder.
All right, yeah.
With the underhook going down, all the way down.
This way.
Yeah, this way.
And that looks exactly like a kata technique.
Yeah.
Try to use.
Yeah.
I catch you here.
I go here.
If you first try to out me.
Out me.
And then I go down and you go down and I go with you.
Yeah, okay.
Yeah.
You use my straight to down.
Yeah.
I go with gravity.
Yeah, okay.
Okay, and you turn your hips and use the underhook.
This way.
Just like Saidai.
Yeah, nice.
Just like Saidai.
Okay.
Great.
Do you have anything else to add?
Oh, I think we can find in the kata
many kinds of positions of techniques
that can be useful in MMA.
Perfect.
All right, thank you.
It's all there.
Yeah, absolutely.
Thank you very much and I hope you guys enjoyed it.
