Nestled in the scenic Renathan Historic District of Montgomery County sits a
castle-like mansion. You've probably seen it. It invites visitors to explore its
remarkable collection of religious art and artifacts representing belief
systems from all around the world. Action News content creator Bill Hartung
takes us to the Glencairn Museum in today's One Tank Trip.
People come here to enjoy the beauty of being in a space that might lead you to
reflect on something or awaken on something. You could just come here and
think it's a really cool castle. My name is Leah Smith and I'm a tour guide at
Glencairn Museum. The physical structure of it was built between 1928 and 1939. It
was built by Raymond and Mildred Pitcairn to be their family home. So
there is a wow factor of when people walk around the corner from the entryway
and they're not expecting it to see this beautiful monumental room that was the
family living room but it looks like a church.
And the amazing view from the tower. Almost every single tour we give gives
you that amazing view from the tower. Raymond Pitcairn had collected medieval
art and when the Bernathen Cathedral that's right across the street was
finished he wanted to build a gallery to showcase his art collection but he was
also living in Cairnwood Estate that's right next door and it wasn't large
enough for his large family. He had nine children so he took all the craftsmen
who helped him build the Bernathen Cathedral and brought them up here to
build Glencairn. They chose imagery of lambs to reflect how
important their family was to them. There's imagery for the United States of
America because they loved their country. You see Christian imagery
everywhere so you see their faith and they gradually started turning what used
to be bedrooms here, 18 bedrooms originally, into galleries. We might go
into Egypt and look at a beautiful object in Egypt. We have an amazing
Egyptian collection and try to investigate what it says about the
religious beliefs and the practices of the Egyptians. Humans are a wide tapestry
and the best part of that is to see for a moment how another person might view
life or faith and they did it in a very elaborate way.
