Police are investigating these two separate, unusual incidents along the Schuylkill Expressway.
And as you mentioned, we're talking
about those incidents on the Skookul
Expressway. In one of them, nails just
spilled out all over the highway,
damaging more than a dozen cars.
In another, plywood flew off a vehicle
and smashed through a windshield. Police
are investigating these two separate
unusual incidents along the Skookul
Expressway.
Action News reporter Corey Davis is
joining us live along I 76 with both of
those stories. Corey, good morning.
Aliana and Matt, good morning. So, no
one wants to be dealing with
emergencies, especially on a busy
highway. But these drivers had to react
with a split second to really make a
decision on what to do.
Not a great time for that to happen. And
even after I drove over, I didn't know
that they were nails right away. Um,
yeah, it wasn't going to be avoidable
with that much traffic.
Nicole Salo was one of more than a dozen
drivers stranded on the shoulder on the
westbound lanes of 76 near Montgomery
Drive. State police say it happened
during rush hour at around 5:00
yesterday evening. We're being told a
load of nails fell off of a truck
spilling onto the highway. State police
also say as many as 15 cars were
damaged, tires were popped, people were
losing air pressure all while in
traffic. AAA got several calls and says
the technician was changing tire after
tire, and that it's important to make
sure you actually have a working spare,
otherwise they'll have to tow it. Now
might be the time to check to make sure
that your your car has a spare tire
because many manufacturers are foregoing
the spare tire as something that always
comes with the car uh because they're
trying to make cars lighter, more fuel
efficient. The spare tire is an add-on.
And in a separate incident on 76, a
spare tire wouldn't have helped a father
and daughter Saturday morning. They were
on the Skookul Expressway when a large
piece of plywood flew off of another car
and smashed into their windshield. Glass
went everywhere and Kevin Scarpa was
driving uh his daughter Gianna back to
Arcadia University for the start of her
junior year when it all happened. He was
able to pull over safely.
I didn't even have time to look for
their license plate. Um it was I just
know it was either white or silver and
it probably was a four it was a
four-door SUV. I don't know if I'll ever
see my car again, but it was I'm just
glad that me and my dad are both okay.
And the Scarper family is hoping to at
least get some information about that
other vehicle, such as a license plate,
so that they could uh just do some
insurance uh take care of insurance as
well. Reporting live here along the
Skookul Expressway, Cory Davis, Channel
6 Action News.
Yeah, nightmare situation for those
drivers. Corey, thank you for the
update.
