Fires are one of the main problems for the forestry industry.
The level of repercussions they have can be catastrophic for both business and nature itself.
Due to the difficulty of accessing these areas, some companies like White River Contracting
have chosen to develop their own specialized firefighting vehicles
designed to access any terrain to combat extreme fires.
Known as the Faucet Cannon, this firefighting equipment is built on a cat log skidder,
from which the rear grapple was removed to be replaced by an 8,500-liter tank
equipped with pumps and water cannons.
With 360-degree lighting, everything is controlled by a single operator
mounted in the safety cabin, which incorporates another highly steerable water monitor.
Among its outstanding features, the water tank refueling system is also worth mentioning,
which allows the tank to be refilled in less than 10 minutes,
with a filtering system to even use wastewater.
Likewise, the front is equipped with a blade of almost 4 meters
to clear ditches, debris, and fallen trees.
Undoubtedly, tracked vehicles are by far the best when it comes to off-road capabilities.
They achieve this thanks to their enormous traction capacity,
along with the high buoyancy that the tracks provide.
That is why companies like the Altoz Mash plant in Russia
have dedicated themselves entirely to the production of tracked vehicles for different industries,
such as forestry, oil, or even construction.
Among its forestry equipment is the IDS Tracked Swamp Mulcher,
used mainly for maintenance tasks in forest environments
where road or railway construction work is about to be carried out,
as well as the installation of power lines,
in addition to the preparation of large-scale forest plantations and jobs such as stump clearing.
As for its engine, it is powered by a 312-horsepower YAM-Z
536 diesel engine with hydrostatic transmission,
reaching a maximum speed of 8 kilometers per hour.
Its mulcher is a 300 UALM-200, which offers a working width of 2 meters.
In a quest to combine comfort with productivity and efficiency,
the German company Jens has finally launched one of its most acclaimed and innovative prototypes,
the HackThor.
It is a self-propelled chipper with a panoramic vision concept.
While this idea is not new to the market,
what makes the Jens version special is its elevating cabin,
thanks to which it guarantees optimal visibility of the work area and the collection vehicles.
Specifically, the cabin can reach a height of 4.5 meters,
also featuring a 360-degree camera system.
All of this is mounted on a truck with at least three axles,
equipped with engines from 520 to 1,332 horsepower.
These same engines power the grinding unit,
which can integrate rotors with diameters between 820 and 1,040 millimeters.
All these options are managed from the easy-to-advance control system,
with multiple flexible and personalized adjustments for an efficient workflow.
With the intention of developing the most durable and efficient machinery for the forestry market,
the German company HSM has launched some of the best equipment for heavy-duty work in the forest.
One of these is the HSM 904F Kombi long skidder,
designed under a concept of high mobility
in environments that would be challenging for any other vehicle.
To face any environment, it is equipped with a robust and reliable 286-horsepower
1,225-newton-meter Volvo Penta engine,
coupled to a ZF transmission with six forward gears and three reverse gears.
This allows the vehicle to be capable of moving its
17 tons of weight while offering a payload of up to 11 tons.
One of its outstanding features is its great adaptability to different tasks.
It achieves this thanks to the integration of multiple attachments,
such as a powerful 14-millimeter double drum winch,
which offers a maximum reach of 130 meters and a traction capacity of 160 kilonewtons.
One of the main problems in the forestry industry is the need to adapt to different environments,
as well as to the regulations of each country.
That is why some brands like Palfinger have chosen to create much more versatile solutions,
as is the case with this semi-timber built from an expandable Femenville logging trailer
for markets like the French one.
The idea is to be able to adapt not only to various loads,
but also to the regulations of the areas where it has to circulate.
That is why this trailer is capable of moving loads of up to 30 tons without any worries,
thanks to its structure reinforced with high-strength steel,
which is why it is common to see it coupled to 6x6 trucks of more than 300 horsepower.
To this must be added some outstanding qualities,
such as its steerable axles for better maneuverability
and having space for the integration of forestry cranes like the Epsilon S 300L 98 with a 9-meter
reach. Honestly, transplanting trees is not a very common activity when talking about
the forestry industry, but at least it is when it comes to landscaping.
Companies like the Canadian Dutchman Industries understand this perfectly,
as they have developed a whole series of equipment focused on these types of tasks,
such as their truck-mounted tree spades.
This series of equipment ranges from options with 50-inch straight blades for 7-inch trees
to versions with 100-inch curved blades designed to move trees up to 12 inches.
As may be logical, these robust options require specific qualities for the trucks
on which they are mounted. In its most robust version,
the truck needs to have tandem axles with a minimum wheelbase of 5.2 meters.
This quality also ensures that it is possible to move relatively tall trees.
Furthermore, it is important to take into account that this equipment can weigh up to 11 tons.
Recognized as one of the main European manufacturers of equipment for timber and
heavy-duty transport, Dahl is undoubtedly a specialist when it comes to developing
efficient solutions for the forestry industry. This is evidenced by the development of its
long timber train, designed for reliable long-term use in the movement of long logs.
In essence, it is a superstructure for the truck's chassis,
along with a small dolly equipped with sophisticated positioning and smart
tracking technology. This facilitates operations with logs whose lengths exceed 20 meters,
since by means of electronic signals the dolly follows the most optimal route traced by the
Contrary to what it would seem, this solution is highly stable as it is built with a robust frame
with a base that adapts to the load in real time.
It is worth noting that this design also allows for saving space during
unloaded trips and avoiding possible road taxes,
a problem that directly affects transporters who use ordinary trailers.
Thinking that there are not always roads that lead to fires,
the Finnish company Ponsse Group, specialized in the manufacturing of custom forestry machinery
for each part of the industrial process, has launched a forest fire extinguishing unit,
focused on addressing disasters in high-risk and difficult-to-access areas.
This equipment has a one-piece design that can be attached to Ponsse's own
buffalo and elephant forest loaders. For its operation, it is only necessary to connect
them to the hydraulic system of these vehicles, being able to function without the need for any
additional power source. This ensures that the firefighting equipment can arrive at any forest
area without difficulties. As for its qualities, it consists of a tank for up to 10,000 liters of
water, equipped with a powerful suction pump that facilitates refilling directly from nearby bodies
of water. Likewise, it includes a main water cannon at the rear, which can be operated
remotely by a crew member on foot, while the driver circulates at a low speed.
