Okay, today I wanted to share my own story of a hungry ghost, and I've had many.
For most of my life, I was chronically depressed, and I carried this belief that life was unfair
and that I would always be a victim of my circumstances.
I felt trapped and that life wouldn't get any better.
Everything in my life became a confirmation that that was true.
Then one night, I had a dream.
I saw what I thought was a little girl version of myself, and she was standing in the corner,
she was wearing a pretty dress, and she was crying, and I could only see the back of her
head.
I thought, oh, it's my inner child, I should go comfort her and help her to feel better.
But when I went over to hug her, I noticed that there was no front to her.
There was only the back.
Like, all she was was a figure standing in a corner crying, she wasn't actually a person.
And that's also when I realized that she wasn't my inner child, she wasn't even me.
She was the manifestation of this wound, that life would always be unfair and that I'd always
be alone.
She was a hungry ghost, she was something that could never be satisfied.
But when I saw that image, it really helped me let go of those beliefs that I was holding
onto.
It didn't happen right away.
It was a battle at times, that I was actually fighting those beliefs, and sometimes they
would take over, and sometimes I would win out against them.
But I did notice that every time those untrue beliefs would come up, her image would come
to my mind, and it would always remind me, this is not true.
And so then over time, it did get easier to choose different thoughts and not to go into
that old pattern.
It was easier to notice, like, even though I feel this in my body, and it feels like
it's true, I know that it's not true, and I know that it will pass.
For me, that's the power in seeing and naming a hungry ghost, that once you see it, you
don't have to keep feeding it.
It's like you become aware of something bigger, and it no longer has the same power that it
had over you in the past.
