Hi, I'm Brad, I'm John, so Eric of the Grommels has released, as far as we can, a new cover.
He's gone and done a dark version this time, as opposed to just a straight-up cover, and the song he picked was Black Velvet.
You recognize it?
You do.
It's actually one of the lyrics as well, so you should know from the lyrics.
Well, I mean, it's...
Anyway.
I mean, like I said, in all the videos, it's like...
Unless I've mixed the song up completely.
The names have just totally... the songs have just...
Yeah, unless I have mixed the song up, in which case, whoops, this bit's not going to match.
Didn't really consider that one.
So this song was originally by Alana Myles, or was sung by Canadian singer Alana Myles, I should say.
Last year, the best decade ever, so I should know it.
It was the second single from her first studio album called, self-titled, Alana Myles.
It was a number one in America, number two in England, and it was a number ten in Canada.
Come on, Canada, she's one of yours.
I know.
Didn't you say she was Canadian?
Yes.
And it won her a Grammy.
I probably didn't.
I probably, once it plays, I'll feel like...
Well, maybe, because this is Eric's tweaked-up version, or tweaked-down version.
If it's a dark cover, is it tweaked-down or tweaked-up?
Probably down.
Anyway.
Apparently, reading the kind of fluff about what the song's about, the song's actually about Elvis Presley's voice.
Which somebody described as black velvet or dark velvet.
You know, that unique Elvis-ness.
His portrait was on a lot of velvet.
That is true.
There are an awful lot of velvet pictures of Elvis, so maybe that's...
Although his shoes only swayed.
Yeah, only swayed.
And blue.
Alright, let's check it out.
Before we do, make sure you hit that like and subscribe.
Check out the description down below, where you're going to find all our links and information and stuff down there.
Let's hope we don't lose that song, I'm pretty sure we will.
Right.
If not, I won't edit that out.
Goodbye.
That take was terrible.
I'm a big troll up high
Mama's dancing with baby on her shoulder
The sun is setting like molasses in the sky
The boy could sing if he had a mood
Everything, always wanting more
He'd leave me longing for
Black velvet and that little boy's smile
Black velvet with that slow southern style
A new religion that'll bring you to your knees
Black velvet, if you please
See, I knew.
Once it started, I knew exactly which song it was.
I also knew as soon as it started.
I knew exactly what song it was.
Weirdly enough, I never actually knew the Elvis link until I read about it, prior to recording this.
And now knowing the Elvis link, it's amazing how much sense the lyrics make.
That's what I was going to say, because I've never heard that.
Now knowing that, and you actually listen to the words, it's like, oh.
Yeah.
Duh.
It's like, oh yeah, it is.
Basically, it's a song about Elvis's voice.
Black velvet, if you please
Up in Memphis, the music's like a heat wave
White lightning, bound to drive you wild
Mama's baby's in the heart of every schoolgirl
Love me tenderly's a crying in the eye
The way you moved, it was a sin
So sweet and true, always wanting more
He'll leave you on your own
Black velvet in that little boy's smile
Black velvet with that slow southern style
A new religion that will bring you to your knees
Black velvet, if you please
Every word and every song that he sang was for you
In a flash, she was gone
It happened so soon
Ooh, what could she do?
Post it, YouTube.
Yeah.
I definitely think, he has such the ability to turn, um, rework.
Yeah.
Songs.
And make them his own.
Yeah.
I mean, you know, sometimes he keeps it very close to the original, but it's like,
when he changes it, you know, he's done a great job at it.
Yeah, he's, he hasn't done a bad cover yet.
Yeah.
And there's a few people who do not like the Aussie one.
But, yeah, there's always going to be a few people who don't necessarily like it.
Yeah.
But yeah, it's like, yeah, any of the covers that he's done,
especially the ones that he significantly changed,
he always does a phenomenally good job at that.
This one.
Um.
What was the other one actually?
Good.
Yeah.
Oh, I can't remember.
It's off.
Let's have it where it's in front of me.
I don't remember.
Think about it.
Yeah.
Bit delay.
Ooh, what could she do?
Give you peace.
Yeah.
I just, you know, like we're just saying, it's like, yeah,
this is ability to rework it.
The song I was thinking of was about you with your house in New Orleans.
Oh.
Yeah.
That was, that was a very good example.
A lot of stuff went on down there.
Yeah.
Um.
But yeah, that's another really good example of a song that he reworked in that
less well-known way.
Yeah.
Shall we say.
Well, and there again, I mean, so many of the covers we do,
you know, are great songs from the 60s, 70s, 80s.
Mm-hmm.
Even a couple in the 90s.
And some of them, yeah, you have to,
some of them are such classics that you have to be careful.
You just got to keep it how it is.
But other songs, I mean, even though this was a great song and a number one song,
I think, you know.
Mm-hmm.
He did a good job reworking it and.
Yeah.
Reworking it, but yet still keeping it.
Yeah.
No, no.
You know what song it is.
Yeah, you know what song it is.
You know where it came from.
But you, yeah, it's kind of like definitely don't mind where he took it.
Yeah, because some of these ones I see on social media,
newer artists who've covered some of these songs,
they just really change.
And it's like, he just totally destroyed that song.
You know, but.
Mm-hmm.
You know, but to each his own, I guess.
You know, everyone's going to like something different.
So I liked it.
I thought it was good.
Yep.
And I think he always does a good job on his covers.
Yes.
Stuff like that.
And we're going to obviously continue hitting them up.
Yes.
