JAPAN vs ITALY | GOLD MEDAL MATCH | Highlights | Women's VNL 2024. The final of the Volleyball Nations League 2024 was held in Bangkok, Thailand on Sunday, June 23rd.
The Japanese women's national team, ranked 6th in the FIVB world rankings (before the start of the match), faced Italy, ranked 1st, and lost 1-3 (17-25, 17-25, 25-21, 20-25). They finished the tournament as runners-up. This is the first time in 10 years since the 2014 World Grand Prix that the Japanese team has won a medal in an international tournament organized by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB).
In the first set, Miyabe Airi and Wada Yukiko were deployed from the start. Italy's offense and defense were hindered from the beginning, allowing them to fall behind 0-3. Ishikawa Mayu and Koga Sarina tried to fight back with spikes, but Italy's momentum was unstoppable, and Japan used up their second timeout at 4-8. Koga improved her scoring ability, but was unable to score consecutive points against Italy's strong offensive power, and the score gap widened. Yamada Nichika's attacks helped Japan gain pace, and they closed the gap to 14-18, but the game ended with the score at 17-22. In the end, Wada's spike just went over the sideline, and Japan lost the set 17-25.
In the second set, Hayashi Kotona was substituted for Wada at the start. Japan got off to a good start thanks to the efforts of Miyabe and Ishikawa, but Italy gradually took control of the pace. Libero Fukudome Satomi desperately tried to hold the opponent's powerful shots, leading to Koga's spike points, and Japan hung on to Italy at 8-9. Italy fought back with incredible tenacity, and Japan, not to be outdone, sent Kojima Manami and Hayashi to the court, but they lost consecutive points to Italy, who had superior offensive power, and were forced into a disadvantageous position at 9-16. In an attempt to change the flow, Seki Nanami and Inoue Arisa were sent onto the court, but the score difference did not narrow, and Japan lost this set 17-25.
In the third set, Japan, eager to get revenge, started with Inoue and Ayaka Araki from the start. Araki's block point made it 5-6, and Koga's back attack made it 6-7, so the game was evenly matched in the early stages. They repeatedly grabbed rebounds from Italy's high blocks, and Inoue scored spikes from the back line, and with the opponent's mistakes, they successfully turned the game around to 10-9. Koga also showed his presence in receiving, and Inoue scored the ball he raised to make it 15-12. Inoue also scored consecutive points with his serve, making it 18-13, and Japan took the pace in the middle stages. After losing three consecutive points to make it 18-16, Koga and Hayashi held on, and Japan was the first to score 20 points at 20-17. When they reached set point at 24-21, the opponent's spike went off the court, and they took back the set at 25-21.
In the fourth set, Italy attacked from anywhere, and Japan struggled to find a target for blocking. Japan fought back with their strong defense, but they were at a disadvantage at 6-11. With a quick from Araki and a spike from Koga, Japan held on to 10-14, and at the end of the set, Wada's efforts brought Japan within three points at 18-21, but they lost the set 20-25 and became the runner-up.
Japan first medal secured for them in VNL history.
How high a guy who gets up that block much shorter in front of her.
Oral stays on it down the line at Ishikawa hit the feather.
It's still over. Here's a free ball.
Running it out the free ball to Japan.
What offense will they run back?
That one out of hand out of getting a ball.
Sela takes her first swing.
It'll be up. Koga.
Ejected on the block.
Sharp and then super sharp.
Carved by Igari.
Japan trailing by four.
Yamada's serve at Sela as expected.
What a block.
To the middle. Dineze denied again.
Igari plays insulted.
What she's saying with her skills.
Inazaki's lucky she got her hands up in time.
Here comes Degradi again.
Keeps it in play.
Kojima back.
Uh oh. Just playing.
Furwada yesterday.
A heck of a serve right now.
I think they're very happy they started Degradi.
She is crushing early.
Trouble.
Free ball.
What will they do?
Great up by Dejanaro.
No libro on Japan's side.
Taken care of.
Nice pass.
Sela slowed.
That's what Japan's block does.
It just slows until it can devastate you.
Degradi brings it super in system.
And this time Sela puts it down with a tip.
Targeting the outside.
Brought back.
Picked up beautifully by Dejanaro.
Uh oh.
That could be a missed opportunity.
Kojima. Nice set back.
Alicia Degradi in the coffin.
Corner where balls go to die.
Just beautiful defense.
Dejanaro laying out for every single ball.
Nothing hitting the floor on Italy's side.
This is why I love when teams play Japan.
Because it elevates their defense to level.
Pass is good.
Run the middle.
A huge block by Eide.
Another big block.
It's up.
And it's going to Ishikawa.
And then Dainese and Ogano.
Did you say big block?
Back a little ball.
Dejanaro puts it up right into Oro's hands.
Over dig.
Dejanaro again.
Ogano.
An exclamation point.
You want to dig the first one?
Dig this.
From the middle.
Another block.
Italy.
Ana Dainese.
Beautiful read.
Hands diving back into the seam.
A double figure serve attempts in every match.
Stay on that back line.
It gets help from the front court block.
Trailing by seven.
Ogano.
So powerful.
Comes down on the Japan side of the net.
Not sealed.
Eight-point lead.
Far serve.
Make that defense move.
No way.
Outside.
Sela got on top of that.
No way.
Doug.
Quick to Degratti.
Off the block.
And out.
Degratti.
First ball side outs here.
It has to be their focus.
They're trailing by two.
Because if Italy gets it, they just convert it.
Block is sent back.
Again, into the pro's nest.
Ogano back court.
Koga.
Is it good?
It sure is.
Koga coming flying through the back row.
That front.
Perfect pass.
They're not running the middle, but they are running the pipe up the back.
Yamada.
Degratti.
Ogano is dug.
An opportunity for Japan.
But no.
Italy returns to their roots.
They're cheering hard for Japan.
Degratti's pass is good.
Back to Denise.
It's up.
Fujidome.
Okay.
We'll set.
Degratti.
Vacuums the back court.
And then Miria Silla.
In for Degratti.
Now Italy back in their best rotation with Ogano front row.
We'll see what the score changes there.
The five-point lead.
De Janeiro big.
Silla.
Carves.
Net side of the defender.
Koga serve.
To Busetti.
Back.
Ngannou with authority to middle back.
Pass is good.
It'll be out of system.
That's what you do.
You come off the bench like Antropova and get a kill.
Swing by Antropova.
Outside.
Block sends it back, but the cover is even better.
Off hands.
Silla.
Koga comes in.
Everybody knows it's going to her.
Silla again.
Block.
Incredible up by De Janeiro.
Wow.
Take a break.
Silla one of the most prolific servers on Italy's side.
I tried to tell you.
Koga.
It's dug.
Silla with a great dig.
The set is off.
Sliding out of nowhere.
Kojima.
To the back line.
Japan has to put it away here.
Because otherwise Italy will come again.
I tried to tell you.
Italy, you can't give it back to them.
They will convert.
Uh-oh.
Tap down.
Antropova.
Serve is good.
Carlotta Kambi.
The set.
What a difference maker Antropova is.
Just call her name.
She'll be there.
She's been that for this Italian team.
She is on the right side up front.
Pass is there.
What a dig.
An incredible dig.
Here it comes.
Oh.
Communication error.
Oro goes back.
Dragano.
And she's just too much to handle.
Margin is four points.
Come all the way around.
Wada.
Now we get to say her name.
Great pass.
Dragano.
Keep running that play.
Two blockers up.
Gets it done.
Block.
Picked up.
Kojima.
They're going to go back again against that big block.
Yeah, I'm judging.
Here it is.
He got her.
Free ball to Japan.
Got Wada behind.
Pogue outside.
They go to Wada.
And Wada swings.
Serving for Japan.
Serve is good.
Perfect pass.
Tola over her head.
There is no Japanese.
Libro on the floor.
That is a beautiful power tip.
Pass is great.
Middle is good.
Udome.
Puts up a hittable ball.
But it's a huge block.
And it's fitted.
Italy wins gold.
