So the Mariners come into the day needing a win,
needing a win badly, to say the least.
Their record right now, 73 and 68, they are three and a half games
out of the division lead, but only a half game up in the third
and final wildcard spot.
We do have a welcome return to the team today
as Victor Robles is back from suspension.
The roster is now at 28.
Hurston Waldrop out of Thomasville, Georgia, 23 years old,
6-2, 2-10, first round pick by the Braves back in 2023
with Atlanta this year since he got called up six games, five starts.
He's gone 4-0 with a 1.01 ERA,
and the team has won all of the games he's appeared in.
The team is 6-0 in those games.
You know, when things get tough in this sport,
you never know what grown men will resort to.
And it's facial hair these days for the Mariners.
The windup and the 3-2 to Cal, and it's going to be inside.
Ball for another check swing.
He did not go. So Cal with a walk.
And the Mariners have a man on here at the top of the first inning.
And Gary, the goal for the Mariners tonight, get the offense going
because the Mariners have struggled
mightily on the offensive side on this road trip.
Wow. This ball launched left field way back there.
Julio, instant offense, a two run blast.
And the Mariners on the board right away.
Holy smokes, a long home run way out here to left field at Truist Park
here in Atlanta.
Julio Rodriguez with his 29th home run of the season.
It was a two run drive and the Mariners have a 2-0 lead over the Braves
here in the top half of the first inning.
That was a no doubter.
Bryce coming away with a really good outing last Sunday in Cleveland.
A four to two win, the only win on the trip so far for the Mariners.
Next offer on the way, swinging a line shot at a hop snare, knocking it down at first.
Naylor, he's got it.
Spin move gets to it.
Little underhand flip over to Bryce covering first on the plate.
It's in time to get profile for the out.
But now two down and Drake Baldwin, who's not catching.
He's the designated hitter here tonight.
And the two two on the way in a swing and a miss for strike three.
Cal's going to knock it down, gets out in front of the plate
to throw down to Naylor at first to complete the strikeout.
It's a strikeout for Bryce's first.
Braves trailing 2-0 into the bottom of the second inning.
It'll be Kim, Acuna and Harris for the Braves in the bottom of the second.
Ball's cracked out to Julio, cutting to his right.
Kind of had to readjust.
That ball might have had some movement on it.
Hit hard by Kim, 1-0-6 off the bat.
And Julio is able to reroute for round number one.
Unusual to see Ronald hitting six.
He hasn't done this since his rookie season back in 2018.
The 2-2. Swing and a miss and he got it.
Strike three.
Blew a fastball right on by Ronald Acuna, Jr.
Miller strikes out Acuna for round number two.
Julio angling back. Julio.
Oh, he makes the catch.
Wow. What a snag by Julio Rodriguez.
108 off the bat.
No match for Julio's speed out in center field.
And the no fly zone continues here in Atlanta.
So the Mariners have runners at first and second with one out.
And that brings up Josh Naylor.
Hopped out to center.
Big league fly out to Michael Harris.
I'll bring up Gino.
The 2-2 pitch. Runners go. Swung on. Missed for strike three.
Struck him out with a splitter.
Had a good job by Waldrop.
Victor Robles will stand in.
He struck out looking his first time.
Here comes the pitch to him.
Swung on. That is smashed into the gap.
Left center field. Profar racing back. It's over his head.
It takes one bounce off the wall around first base.
Robles gliding into second.
He smashes a double.
He's in there now in scoring position with two away.
Oh, two. Got him.
And it's the splitter swinging a miss for Reebok.
All right. Time to get the bats going.
Two nothing Mariners into the bottom of the fourth inning.
It'll be Olsen, Albies and Baldwin do up versus Bryce Miller.
Matt Olsen lifts it high and deep.
And he put the power stroke on that thing.
A long home run by Matt Olsen.
Deep over the Braves bullpen into the seats.
And it's a one run game.
Now two on Mariners in the fourth.
About four hundred fifty nine feet on that swing for Matt Olsen.
Ozzie to left.
The Rose and Rainer bat still going.
Oh, he dropped it.
He got turned around and tried to make a basket catch and it fell.
And Ozzie's on second base.
So runners on the corners now with two away.
Michael Harris will bat.
He lined out to center field his first time.
Swung on lifted center field.
Julio tracking it a couple steps in.
He's there.
He makes the one hand catch.
And that is it for Atlanta here in the fourth.
Now the Mariners have a chance to add on with a fly ball.
Grounded a third.
Wynacho almost got a Rosarito.
He's still able to get Rodriguez.
Well, he had gotten that tag on a Rosarito.
That's been one of the best double plays all year.
No kidding.
That's good play.
I tell you, I mean, almost had a Rosarito.
But then to have to make that tag spin around, throw off the wrong foot
all with a guy who can run, that's good play.
3-1 on one bounce to Hassan Kim.
Long throw. Got him.
And Waldrop, even without his best stuff, gets through five and only gives up two.
And the bases are loaded with one out.
And that is indeed going to be the night for Bryce Miller.
If Seattle's going to hold this lead, it's up to the bullpen.
Well, Gabe Speier last night faced four batters.
All four of them had hits.
Three scored.
He's hoping for better luck tonight.
Yeah, that's why you hear all the time people talk about relievers.
You better have a short memory.
This is exactly why.
Michael Harris batting.
Harris, first pitch.
He jumps on it.
Deep into left center.
On the track, it's brought in by Rodriguez.
But the Braves tie it at two in the sixth.
Tight game now.
Two outs here is Murphy.
Swung on, ripped on one hop right to J.P. Crawford.
Underhand scoop to second base.
Standing right there, Rivas.
That's the out.
That is the inning.
Julio, a two run home run.
Randy, the go ahead run at second.
Here's the pitch.
Swung on, drilled.
Center field.
Harris racing back.
He's looking up.
It's into the waterfall.
Julio, a two run smash.
When the Mariners need it the most.
Number 30 for Julio.
An emphatic two run home run into the waterfall.
The Mariners have the lead.
It is four to two.
Here's Geno.
Swung on, that is crushed.
Left field.
It's on its way.
It is gone.
Into the Mariners' bullpen.
Eugenio Suarez strikes number 43 on the year.
Home run derby has broken out in Atlanta.
The Mariners add to the lead.
It is five to two Mariners.
So, Polanco at second base.
Here's J.P. Crawford.
Two outs, Mariners up three.
The pitch.
Lined over Kim.
Polanco being waved in.
And Jorge Polanco scores.
J.P. Crawford with an RBI knock.
And not all the runs coming out of homers after all.
Six to two Mariners.
So, now the Mariners have a chance to add on to their
six to two lead here in the top of the eighth inning.
Here's Naylor.
That's how you do it.
Pitch on the way.
Swing and a drive.
Deep into right field.
Acuna going back looking up and goodbye baseball.
Play a little more add on.
Josh Naylor this time.
A three run blast and the Mariners have blown it open.
Dallas 0 for four in the night but almost hit one out of the
home park in the seventh inning.
Pitch on the way.
Swing and a well hit ball.
Deep to right field.
Going and going and there is number 52 above the chop house
in right field.
Javi Lopez had 42.
That was the 42nd home run for Cal as a catcher.
And 52 of the year.
The Mariners one out away from a big win here in Atlanta.
Line and to the glove of Leo Rivas.
A feel good kind of game the Mariners needed in the worst
way.
Tended to the final the Mariners waxed the Braves in game two.
