Smoking line, like, smoking.
I think this is one, eh?
That's a smoking line.
It's going that way, but that's all right.
We're pinning the line.
Woken up.
Last year, giant bluefin tuna turned up on my doorstep
here in the Bay of Islands, where I saw things
I could barely believe.
Bluefin tuna blowing up on bait right by the rocks,
and we encountered some real monsters.
OK, I'm going to grab this leader in a second,
so get ready.
Straighten up.
It's swimming below us.
It's a big bastard, man.
A proper big one.
There it is, boys.
This year, the giant bluefin are back in the bay,
and today is my first chance to get out and have
a proper look for them.
So I've got me old Uncle Pete with me and his son, Marshall.
And first thing we're going to do is try and catch bait.
But although we can see thousands of these bait fish
on the surface, we can't get them
to take a lure or a fly.
So I resort to casting a lure to jag some for bait.
And it worked great, until the third one that I was pulling
in got eaten by a giant bluefin tuna right by the boat.
It was great to see, but left me with a busted line.
Let's get a bait out.
Come on.
Of course, we got a bait out straightaway,
attached a heavy tackle.
It's coming, yeah?
Splash up on top.
It looked like a tuna.
Oh, pull, snap.
We pulled it.
Stop.
Slow down.
We pulled it.
But that was the last sign of any tuna until late in the day,
and we shifted spots, threw out one of our jagged live baits,
and straightaway, all hell broke loose.
Might be a king here.
I don't know.
It's taking line.
It's jumping line still.
Yeah.
Smoking.
I think this is one, eh?
We've got plenty of line.
Working up.
Tell me what's happening with the line, mate.
It's pissing out.
Get ready to wind, Marty.
Not great conditions.
It would have been pretty quiet, but it's come up here,
found some bait, threw a bait out, and boom.
There we go.
It could be a big, dirty bronze dog,
but we're going to treat it like it's the real thing.
OK, uncles.
This gaff, I'm just going to leave it laying here, OK?
OK.
What do you think you're doing now, Pete?
We're on a good side.
We're downwind, so this is good.
Yeah.
You ready?
I'm almost ready.
I am ready now.
All right, let's go.
I can see it.
It's a thresher.
Get a shot of him.
Look at that thing.
Woo-hoo.
Well, we were swapping boards.
Dirty, eh?
You're a red fish, eh?
Look at that freak.
OK, I'm going to cut him in a sec.
I'm going to go home.
Incredible, incredible.
Oh, you know what?
Last time we got a thresher, we got a bluefin the same day,
OK?
Thought that was the real thing, then,
for a minute on that hard rod.
I'm pretty far.
We're on.
We're on, boys.
Yeah.
Do you want to do this, Martin?
Don't you get my game rod broken, whitebait.
Got you.
Oh, yeah, we got him.
Right hand, hard lock, please, Pete.
Hard lock.
It's a fatty, boy.
We'll look through all the food that he's got here.
Tell me when you've got him, and we'll lift him together.
You happy?
Yeah.
Three, two, one.
That's a big fatty, eh?
Look how fat that thing is, boy.
He's fat.
Oh, wow, look at the depth.
Look at the depth through the body on that thing.
Bloody good, boy.
Making a gut to yourself.
Don't need no gimbal lens on.
Oh, boy.
Whatever.
Oh, look at the clouds in the background.
Yep, go.
Right?
That is.
That is, all right.
That is.
So, of course, after that, I'm rigging up another bait
to do the same thing, which you can get a better
look at how I'm rigging this in our how-to playlist.
But anyway, we've left the GoPro running
after releasing Marshall's kingfish, which
is a rookie error.
But it means you get to see how long it
takes us to hook our next one.
So bait goes in, and start the clock.
Wait.
Ah, he is.
Yeah, we're on.
Go.
Go ahead.
Still straight away.
Slow down.
And how?
How deep are we?
Slow down.
Man, kingfish.
The crazy thing is, any one of them
could have been a bluefin, too.
Man, with all this food here, it's
like, as fast as we can get these baits out,
they're getting eaten.
Get ready to go back in gear.
He's a leader.
You get him, my son.
That's it, mate.
That's a big one, boy.
Just hold him there.
That's it, perfect.
OK, start lifting.
Pull on the leader.
Look at that.
Good thing, boy.
That's a dog, isn't it?
That's a dog, boy.
Holy.
That's a big one.
I know.
Ready?
Yeah.
Grab me a camera motor, uncle.
Crack it.
Bring a couple of selfies.
Look at this.
Yeah.
That was a dog.
Holy.
Yep, that was a dog.
I haven't caught a kingfish that big in a long time.
That was a ripper, right?
That was a ripper.
That's just in the girth of them.
I know, mate.
Hope you enjoyed this action from the other day.
