This is my five-minute brain-boosting breakfast bowl,
and it changed everything for me.
Hi, I'm Dan Martin, a chef and nutritionist,
but back when I was training in kitchens,
I was burning out fast.
Breakfast wiped me out, I'd crash by midday,
lose focus, and never really feel on top of my game.
Maybe you think breakfast isn't that important,
or that eating well is just complicated,
but I'll show you how one simple bowl
can shift the way your whole day feels.
Trust me, it can.
How do I know?
I've cooked thousands of meals to help people feel better,
but I wasn't always looking after myself.
Long hours, poor habits,
I didn't even realise I was running on empty,
until I changed what I put on my plate.
So let's break the cycle.
I'm going to show you my go-to breakfast,
quick, energising, and simply enjoyable.
Even my kids love it, unless they're being picky,
which is quite often.
But we roll with the punches.
Here's what I see all the time,
people undervalue breakfast.
We get that it shouldn't be a big production,
so we just grab a slice of toast and head out the door.
But simple doesn't mean unimportant.
What you eat first thing still shapes your entire day.
You need one solid meal, fast, satisfying,
and packed with ingredients that work for you,
not against you.
This bowl is exactly that.
It's energy you can feel, focus you can use,
and digestion that doesn't hijack your morning,
and keeps it smooth, steady, and predictable,
which is what we want.
Let's be honest,
no one's got time for surprises on a busy day.
Here's what you'll need and why it works.
First, 200 grams of Greek yogurt,
high in protein to keep you full,
and packed with probiotics to support gut and immune health.
You want to keep it vegan?
Use any plant-based yogurt,
just to be sure to boost the protein
with a glass of soy milk,
a scoop of protein powder,
or whatever works for you.
Next, add 60 milliliters or a tablespoon or two of kefir.
It's a fermented milk drink
that adds even more gut-loving probiotics.
Think of Greek yogurt as the fuel,
kefir is the high-octane upgrade.
Next, add 50 grams of frozen mixed berries,
loaded with antioxidants and polyphenols.
They help protect your cells,
support brain health,
and give you that sweet hit without the sugar crash.
Next, we have 15 grams of crushed walnuts.
These are the MVPs,
packed with omega-3s,
and shown in studies to boost memory and cognitive function.
They even look like tiny little brains.
They act like it too.
This is the one thing I'll never skip.
These bad boys are your shortcut to sharper thinking,
better focus,
and showing up like a pro,
whether it's work, parenting,
or just crushing your day.
15 grams of mixed nuts and seeds.
Here, we're not only adding diversity to our bowl,
we're also adding healthy fats,
protein, fibre,
and essential minerals.
Think of them as a crunchy, natural vitamin.
15 grams of chia seeds,
soaked overnight in a three-to-one ratio.
They're high in fibre and omega-3s.
These help with digestion,
blood sugar balance,
and keep you feeling full for hours.
One tablespoon of kinako powder,
which is a roasted soy flour.
Quiet superfood,
subtle, nutty flavour,
extra plant protein,
and a hit of iron and isoflavones.
Now, if you can't get kinako powder, no problem.
Sub in almond flour,
peanut powder,
or your favourite protein powder.
I just happen to live in Japan
where this is readily available.
And finally,
if you want to add a touch of extra sweetness
to make it more palatable,
then add one teaspoon of maple syrup.
As far as sweeteners go,
I like maple syrup
because it contains antioxidants
and some minerals like manganese too.
Remember, just a touch is enough.
Don't give it to your kid
because he will just go crazy with it.
This bowl contains around 25 grams of protein as it is.
If you're aiming for 30 or 40 grams,
just add a large glass of soy milk,
a scoop or two of protein powder,
or bump up the Greek yogurt.
Any of those will easily push your protein up
by another 10 to 20 grams.
Okay, so night before,
you want to soak your chia seeds in water,
three times the water to seed ratio.
So one tablespoon of chia seeds
requires three tablespoons of water
and leave that overnight.
Next, we're going to mix our Greek yogurt and kefir.
We're going to spoon that into a bowl.
And then next,
we're going to layer our berries, chia, walnuts,
and all your little extras inside our breakfast bowl.
Finally, we're going to drizzle maple syrup
if you want the extra sweetness.
And if you're my son,
it's not a drizzle,
it's always a pour.
This recipe doesn't even need cooking.
I know, I know, I'm a chef,
but that doesn't mean every meal has to be fancy.
Some of the best meals are fast, smart,
and save you time and energy
when you need to tackle what life's about to throw at you.
This bowl is exactly that.
Now, here's why this kind of breakfast matters.
If you start your day with just carbs,
toast, sugary cereal,
you'll get a quick spike in energy,
but then crash by 10 or 11 a.m.
You're starving again,
low focus and reaching for snacks.
This bowl, it's slow release.
Protein, fiber, good fats,
they stabilize your blood sugar,
keep you full for longer,
and give you a calm, steady energy.
That's the difference.
That's the advantage.
Now, if you're still here,
here's a little Brucey bonus.
This bowl isn't one size fits all.
You can tweak it depending on
what kind of day you're about to have.
If you're bulking or need extra calories,
add a handful of extra nuts
or a scoop of nut butter like peanut butter.
Hit in the gym later,
stir in some oats or cooked quinoa
for slow release carbs.
Got a long day deep thinking?
Double up on the walnuts,
your brain will thank you.
Or if you're feeling sluggish or constipated,
add more chia or some ground flaxseed.
Trust me, it works.
Knead it on the go,
layer in a jar and take it with you.
It keeps well for hours.
