Coach Prime has done it all, football, baseball, motivational speaker.
I even asked him, is he going to be a pastor one day?
He said he was going to pass on that one, but he would continue to pass on his message
of inspiration.
In our interview with him back in January, he talked about his deep faith and how it
has helped guide him through his life.
He said life is always changing and soon after that, it changed.
A few months after our show, he would be diagnosed with an aggressive form of bladder cancer
and his faith would help him in his fight.
Take a look.
Y'all are bringing tears to my eyes.
Okay, he just said, and I told him we didn't need napkins.
You said they're bringing tears to your eyes.
You know why?
Because in my position, you give, give, give, give.
When I sit in my office, I get there by 4.45 a.m. and by the time everyone's arrived, throughout
the day it's probably 20 to 30 knocks on my door and everybody wants some.
So whenever I'm in a position where I'm the recipient, it's so humbling and it's such
a blessing.
Yeah.
So, dammit.
Now you're going to make me cry.
It's touching.
It really is.
I'm used to being in the position of giving, not receiving, and y'all just, y'all just
blessed me so much.
I wasn't expecting that, but that doesn't surprise me because you're always so present.
I just read this quote from ESPN, they said, nothing has been the same at Colorado since
the school hired Deion Sanders.
Amen.
They call it the prime effect.
The influence you're now having on Michael Vick now, head coach.
Oh, I love him.
I love him.
Mike Vick and Deshaun, guys like that are coaching in HBCUs as well as coaching period.
We got to give them everything they need.
We got to make sure they're successful because they're representing us.
The more of those youngsters that are successful, the more opportunities that we may have.
Is that what you thought the prime, I mean, listen, when you took the job, is that what
you expected?
I mean, everywhere, the first time, and you probably don't remember this, I interviewed
you years ago.
I was a local reporter in Dallas.
It was so long ago, they can't find the tape.
You were playing for Dallas.
I'm from Dallas.
They sent me there to interview you for something.
Everywhere you've gone, you've left an impact, but did you expect this impact?
Yes.
You did?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I don't want to be brash.
I mean, I'm asking the man who said he wanted so much money, he had to put you on layaway.
So I don't know why I'm surprised.
I don't want to sound brash or the risk of tipping this with arrogance, but I expect
the best.
Right.
I don't expect leftovers.
I expect the best.
I don't expect to come in second.
I expect to come in first.
I don't expect to halfway do nothing.
I do it all the way.
Everything that I'm involved in, and even products I endorse, I give it 100%, and I
don't put my name on it unless I stand by it.
So everything in life, I expect, when I walked out here to change the darn temperature, I
expect that.
Like, I do.
This is no chance.
I don't do nothing by chance, by happenstance.
Everywhere I go, I'm ordained.
I'm supposed to be there.
I want to take you to a quote.
So at your first press conference when you took over the job in Colorado, you said,
My calling is not built on a location.
It is built on a destination.
The Bible says God uses the foolish things to confound the wise, and he always taking
me to unlikely places.
Why was that an unlikely place for you?
Because it don't seem right.
When I went to Jackson, Mississippi, no one saw that coming.
I didn't even see that coming.
I didn't even know what Jackson was.
And I got there, and I said, Wow.
So Lord, this it?
No.
So this is what you got?
Okay.
Let's go.
But I did the same thing with a youth program in Texas where we had a trial.
The first trial we had was 1,200 kids.
I remember.
It was nothing and turned it into something.
We did charter schools, nothing to turn it into something.
So everything that God has taken me has been nothing, and we turned it into something because
God hands it on.
Okay.
So as I said, Deshaun Jackson, Michael Vick, all now head coaches at HBCU.
You have conquered that.
Now you've conquered the territory in Colorado.
Has God told you it's time to go to the NFL?
No, not yet.
Not yet.
Not whatsoever.
I love.
So you have no interest in coaching NFL right now?
I'm going to get there.
Let me get there.
You got to understand I'm a father, and I love my babies.
Shador is on vacation right now.
Shallow as well.
Junior is here with me, but we haven't had that conversation.
Really?
Because they're both leaving.
Right, right.
They're both about to go into their next journey.
They're elevating.
There you go.
I see you're emotional about it.
There you go.
Because you won't be coaching them.
Yeah, and that's tough.
That's tough.
But you could be coaching them in the NFL if you follow.
If I want to.
But I don't feel like I'm called at this point to that.
I have not heard from God on that, and I don't know him.
The reason, the reason I'm somewhat successful in the things I do, because I hear his voice,
and I follow his voice, and I don't care what nobody says.
When I hear his voice, I go, and I'm not timid.
I'm not reluctant.
I go with everything I got.
At the end of July, Deion Sanders announced he is cancer-free after undergoing bladder
wound surgery, which he revealed in greater detail in this news conference.
Take a look.
I said, Lord, whatever it is that you're doing, let me know what it is so I could expedite
the process, because I know you got me.
I've seen you have my back.
I've seen you there in the midst of storms, when nobody knew I was going through hell.
I've seen you guide me and bring me through, Lord.
I would never say why me, but letting me know what I need to do so that I can help.
And there's some people out there right now dealing with the same issue, affected by that
C-word, that we usually, when we hear that word, it's normally a life sentence attached
to it, but not this time, but not this time, because God got me.
Deion, we love you so much.
We consider you to be a part of the Tam fam, and we cannot wait for you to return and sit
here on this sofa to celebrate the many great things to come in your life.
We love you.
We'll be right back.
