I am Michael Cox, a dedicated special education teacher, proud union member, and lifelong community advocate running to represent District 13 in the Orange County Legislature.
I am stepping up to bring real change to a system that has been closed off for too long. Our local government should serve the people, not a network of insiders. The continued practice of hiring family and friends over well-qualified candidates is not just unfair; it undermines trust, shuts out talent, and opens the door to costly lawsuits and ethical conflicts.
Okay, let's talk about some of your experience, like you said, you work for the...
So, to tell you a little bit about myself, I'm a current school teacher, and I work in Liberty, New York.
I teach special education for high school students, history, and I'm currently finishing up my second master's in educational leadership
to be a school principal and later on administrator district-wide in some capacity.
In the past, I've been a Senate intern for Charles Schumer and a White House intern in the Trump administration.
In Washington, D.C., where I was an intern, I got to see firsthand the inner workings of the White House and the Eisenhower Executive Building in Washington.
It was very remarkable. I got firsthand teachings on how to be a leader, and it was a great civic duty to see the federal level of government.
Everything I gained, I look to take it with me here in some capacity as a legislator or whatever it may be down the road.
I give thanks to you for allowing me this opportunity.
Yeah, I have a question. Because you are a teacher, I would like to talk about how social media is important for the kids
and how we can keep the kids safe and clean, like don't be affected by the bad information. Do you have an idea?
Yeah, so I really believe social media has to be regulated for the kids.
It's altered the way they concentrate. Their attention span has been really impacted.
And I think the best way we could do to reconcile these issues is as parents, regulate them and give them only certain amounts of the day access to their phones and usage.
In school, this is our first time ever. Students can't have their phones on their purse, and they have to be put away in their lockers.
This is different in all school districts in the state. It's tough, but I think it's a step in the right direction.
Yeah, what about if you can find a safe digital platform and you can have value-based content to make the students and the teachers teach the kids easier
and they can watch movies, watch content to educate them to be a better person.
I think that's another good step in the right direction. If we could find a platform for children and teachers to have something educational, it's great.
It also allows for differentiation in the lesson plans for our children in school.
As a teacher, I think we're in the business of educating the children, and technology in this day and age is very helpful.
If it offers great teaching and great instruction, I'm 100% for it. I think it is possible.
But the cell phones today really hurt our generations to come, and I think it's going to take a few years to create a positive change in the right direction,
especially with our attention and our focus and concentration.
Alright, thank you.
You're welcome.
Thank you so much.
