On the southern coast of Spain, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea,
stands a hidden gem that feels straight out of a fairy tale.
This is Castillo Colomares.
At first sight it seems like a medieval fortress,
but in truth it is a modern creation, born less than 40 years ago.
Between 1987 and 1994, a Spanish doctor named Esteban Martín Martín
built this extraordinary monument.
With only two local craftsmen at his side,
he dedicated seven years of his life to honouring one of history's greatest journeys,
the voyage of Christopher Columbus and the meeting of two worlds.
What makes Castillo Colomares remarkable is its design.
It is not one style, but many.
Byzantine domes, Romanesque arches, Gothic spires and mudéjar details all blend together,
a reflection of the diverse cultures that shaped Spain during the 15th century.
Though it looks like an ancient fortress,
Castillo Colomares was never meant for defence.
It was built as a labour of love.
A monument to imagination, perseverance and vision.
Look closely and you'll find details that tell the story of discovery.
Carvings of the Niña, the Pinta and the Santa Maria.
Scenes that echo the courage of Columbus's voyage across the Atlantic.
Today this fairy tale castle attracts visitors from around the world.
Some come for its storybook beauty, others for its history.
But all leave with the same impression,
that Castillo Colomares is more than stone and mortar.
It is a symbol of discovery, of cultures meeting and of one man's dream made real.
